Game Thread Game Five: #1 Ohio State 38, #13 Iowa 17 (9/30/06)

That may be the case on our side, but I doubt they feel the same.:wink2:

Very true...

Even though I live in Tallahassee, I work with numerous Iowa fans. They seem to think that we are their achilles heel, that they very rarely break through against us.

They feel like they were better than us in '02, when we were National Champions and they weren't even champions in their own state. When we actually got to play each other in '03, it was immensely frustrating to them that we beat their ass. "I can't believe how fast your linebackers are..." was a frequent comment. It has been for years now that I think of it...

As for Tate, they say that this injury is the most painful injury he's ever had and that he's been fighting it for months.

Personally, I hope he is completely healed by the time we play them. Their weaknesses are glaring at WR and DB. Their WRs won't be able to get open and their DBs have no hope of covering ours. Tate at his best in Kinnick at night might be able to keep it within 2 touchdowns. but then he might not

DES MOINES, Iowa ? Iowa wide receiver Calvin Davis is expected miss the rest of the season after tearing his right Achilles' tendon in practice.
Davis, a fifth-year senior and starter, had just two receptions for the 16th-ranked Hawkeyes, who host rival Iowa State on Saturday.

Kirk Ferentz was flipping through the pages of a book about Lance Armstrong last summer when he came upon a section he found amusing.
As the Iowa football coach read about Armstrong's career before winning the Tour de France seven times, he thought about his quarterback.
"I just started laughing because there's a real parallel in those 30 or 40 pages between a young Lance Armstrong and Drew Tate," Ferentz said. "I'm not suggesting Drew's an eight-time Olympian or whatever. But early in Lance's career, it was all straight-ahead power. ... Then he learned how to race."
Three weeks into his senior season, Tate appears as if he's becoming more refined. He appears as if he's more relaxed playing within Iowa's offense and within his own abilities. He appears as if he's gaining a feel for which buttons to push with each of his teammates.
"Forget about the playbook, that's what's important -- when to do it, when not to do it," Ferentz said. "He has grown immensely."
In other words, Tate is learning how to race.
"He's more comfortable than I've ever seen him, and he's grown," Ferentz said. "He's done his homework, and he's grown. That's how it's supposed to work, but it's his job, and he's doing a good job of it.
"I think we're seeing a guy who's moving along here and doing a great job (at) not only being a quarterback but a leader."
Tate has adeptly taken care of the quarterback part of his job description since becoming Iowa's starter in 2004. His name is etched alongside former Hawkeye greats Chuck Long, Chuck Hartlieb and Matt Rodgers on nearly all of Iowa's passing records.
Tate's three touchdown passes Saturday against Iowa State pushed his career count to 49, second only to Long's 74. His 6,166 yards passing leave him 768 behind Hartlieb for second place.
But when it comes to the bottom line, none of the most heralded passers in Hawkeye history have a better winning percentage than Tate's 19-7 mark as a starter.
Tate, however, has said he's never been one to pay much attention to history. Chemistry is the subject he's more apt to mention this year.
"Right now, I can't say enough about my teammates," he said following Saturday's 27-17 victory against the Cyclones.
"We've got a lot of guys out there making things happen and a lot that people don't see. We're getting better every week, even in practice."
Tate said he's never played on a team with better chemistry than the Iowa outfit that enters Saturday's game at Illinois with a 3-0 record and No. 14 ranking. Perhaps the quarterback has something to do with that.
"Maybe (I'm more of a leader) just because I'm a senior," Tate said. "Coach Ferentz is really big on senior leadership, and that's fine and I believe in that. But in my position, I thought I was a leader when I was a sophomore.
"I'm not the only one who stands out. We've got everybody working together. I think we've got 11 leaders on offense, and that's what you need."

GAMEDAY RETURNING?: Based on recent trends combined with a summer prediction, it appears as if ESPN's College GameDay crew could make a stop in Iowa City next week for Iowa's game against Ohio State, provided the Hawkeyes and Buckeyes both win this weekend.
GameDay analyst Kirk Herbstreit said last month he thought there was a good chance the Saturday morning pregame show would wind up in Iowa City for the Sept. 30 showdown if both teams were undefeated. The Iowa-Ohio State game is scheduled for a 7:13 p.m. kickoff and will be broadcast nationally on ABC. GameDay followed ABC's primetime game during the first three weeks, going to Georgia Tech when it opened the season against Notre Dame, Texas when it played host to Ohio State and USC this past weekend when it played Nebraska.
The Iowa-Ohio State pairing is the only game on next weekend's slate that features two teams currently ranked in the top 15. GameDay hasn't returned to Iowa City for a pregame show since it came in 1996 for Iowa's game against Ohio State.
? EXTRA POINTS: Iowa senior Marcus Paschal is listed as the starting free safety after missing Saturday's game against Iowa State. Paschal suffered a stinger while making a third-quarter hit against Syracuse but returned later in that game. Ferentz said Saturday that the Hawkeyes were waiting for Paschal to regain the strength he lost from the jolt. ... Freshman Trey Stross moved into the two-deep at one receiver position. He is listed behind freshman Dominique Douglas.

Ok, that's just nuts...not only would that be three Buckeye games covered by Gameday (Just in the month of september, mind you) but it would also be two Buckeye games in a row for them.

They better go to Iowa city! The #1 team in the country against a top 15 team. And just think, they might go to east lansing in october and they might come to Columbus again for THE GAME.

With No. 1 looming, Hawkeyes try not to look ahead
By JIM NELSON, Courier Sports Writer

IOWA CITY - Don't tell Albert Young today's Big Ten opener at Illinois is a sandwich game for 14th-ranked Iowa.

The Hawkeyes' junior running back won't be drawn into a conversation about Iowa's potential early season showdown with top-ranked Ohio State next Saturday at Kinnick Stadium.

Young says this week's schedule indicates the Hawkeyes (3-0) are at Illinois (1-2) and that the Illini have been the primary focus in Iowa's camp this week.

It was the same stance Young and the Hawkeyes took when scribes tried to lure him into a conversation about Iowa State during the Syracuse week. Young knew the Orange would be a tough opponent, and the 20-13 double overtime victory Iowa scrapped for proved it. Ditto for Illinois, says Young.

"We didn't overlook Syracuse, said Young. "It was everybody on the outside that marked it as an easy win. Illinois is going to be in the same boat. Iowa is coming to town and everybody is going to be pumped up."

"It is a new season for everyone, and Illinois is going to try to start off 1-0 just like we are."

Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz says he doesn't have to stretch his memory much to know it hasn't been easy for his Hawkeyes for any of the first three weeks of the season.

"We've had to work hard three weeks in a row, and chances are it is going to be that way this week, and chances are it is going to be that way all season, said Ferentz. "

Illinois enters the game coming off back-to-back losses to Rutgers (33-0) and Syracuse (31-21). With 23 new players, 20 of them freshmen, the Illini are still finding out what kind of team resides in Champaign.

Head coach Ron Zook believes his team is making steps in the right direction.

"I don't believe that there are any points where we have gone backwards, said Zook. "I said at the beginning of the year that we are a much-improved football team, and I really believe we are. There were some flashes this past Saturday, and we have to continue to get better and improve, and we will. Any time you are a football team with as much youth as we have, you are going to get better with every game."

Iowa is hoping this isn't the week Illinois puts it all together.

"We know what they are capable of, said senior safety Miguel Merrick. "I think last week they had 400 yards of offense. That definitely tells you they have playmakers and guys who are willing and able to make plays."

"I'm sure they are going to be just as hungry as Syracuse was and they know they haven't won against us in three years. They are going to be ready, added quarterback Drew Tate.

Trailing 31-7 after three quarters to Syracuse last week, Illinois made a spirited rally behind freshman quarterback Juice Williams in the fourth quarter.

Williams threw touchdown passes of 76 yards to Rashard Mendenhall and 66 to Kyle Hudson.

Through three games, Williams has shared snaps with junior Tim Brasic, who was the starter last fall for the Illini. Currently, Brasic is listed as the starter, but there has been an outcry for Zook to hand the ball over to Williams permanently.

"Brasic is more experienced, obviously, said Ferentz. "He has missed some throws this year, but I'm just thinking back to last year and he played very well against us. My recollection walking off the field is, "Boy, they had a lot of yards and posed us some problems."

"With the younger guy (Williams), he's got a live arm and good feet. He can beat you with his arm and feet. Our coaches kind of compare him to a young Bret Meyer."

A year ago, Iowa jumped out to an early 14-0 lead, but Illinois had more than enough chances in the first half to make a game of it.

Illini kicker Jason Reda had two field-goal attempts blocked by Kenny Iwebema and missed a 21-yard attempt.

Leading 14-0 at the half, the Hawkeyes scored on their first three possessions of the second half to put the game away en route to a 35-7 win.

"They gave us our challenges, said Ferentz of last year's game. "We had our chalkboards out during the game trying to make adjustments."

Ohio State's next opponent: Iowa

Sunday, September 24, 2006

Iowa hasn't looked great, but the Hawkeyes will reach next Saturday's game undefeated as expected. They beat Illinois, 24-7, Saturday, previous wins including a blowout of Division I-AA Montana, a double- overtime win over Syracuse and a 10-point win over Iowa State.
But every minute of action this season has been building to Saturday night's game at Kinnick Stadium, just the second night game in stadium history. A win would be a program-changer for the Hawkeyes, currently ranked 14th. And you know they're still smarting from Ohio State's 31-6 domination of a year ago, when Hawkeyes quarterback Drew Tate spiked the ball in frustration on one play.
"To play a great ranked team on the road, it's like no other," Ohio State quarterback Troy Smith said. "I'm looking forward to seeing Drew Tate, who I think is one of the best quarterbacks in the nation."
The Buckeyes' defense might not be looking forward to it. Tate will be the first talented quarterback with experience Ohio State has faced, and may be able to take advantage of things others so far have missed.

I don't have the time this year to do the official game preview stuff but here's my .02 on Iowa.

They have played a 1-AA school and 3 MAC level 1-A teams(syracuse, Iowa State and Ill).

I know Tate missed the Syracuse game but the Iowa defense has allowed about 300 ypg over the past 3 to those cream puffs.

They have given up over 14ppg to ISU and SU.

All in all I know the stats aren't overwhelming and its a small sample size so I'll just give a bare bones synposis:

Iowa hasn't seen anything this year to prepare them for the speed and talent they are about to encounter. We have played 2 of our 4 games to date vs opponents with roughly equal talent and very bad intentions.

I know its at night and at their place but I place a TON of emphasis on the "big step up in opponent" variable when it comes to CFB. I don't think a night game in Kinnick Stadium is enough to overcome the step up principle and the fact we have the better team.

This could be a Saturday night, prime time media love fest that cements our #1 for the rest of the season and puts TS back in the drivers seat for the Heisman.
