Iowa is banged up coming into this game...key weakness or key rallying point?

A day of the 'unknowns'

Dan Parr - The Daily Iowan

CHAMPAIGN, ILL. - Iowa's "next man in" approach is rarely employed more than it was in Champaign. With a slew of injuries to such big-time trench talents as defensive end Kenny Iwebema, defensive tackle Mitch King, left tackle Dace Richardson, and center Rafael Eubanks, experience and stability were luxuries the Hawkeyes didn't have.

Kirk Ferentz said his squad was running out of bodies by the games' end. Drew Tate admitted he didn't even know who was blocking for him at some points of the contest.

Unknown names such as offensive linemen Travis Meade and Wesley Aeschliman were the ones protecting Tate. Sophomore guard Seth Olsen, known as the team's sixth-best offensive lineman, started at guard for suspended senior Mike Jones.

"If you notice over the past two years, the line that Iowa starts with in the first few games of the season isn't the same line at the end of the season," Olsen said. "We shuffle it up quite a bit, and we were able to do that today, and it just worked for us."

On the defensive side, second-team defensive tackle Ryan Bain made the most of his playing time while filling in for injured starter Mitch King. Bain earned credit for half a sack and kept pressure on struggling Illini quarterback Juice Williams.

"I think Iowa recruits the right type of people but preaches the right type of thing, and it's the coaches," Bain said. "Next man in, always be ready. Like I said, on our D-line, we rotate regularly. It's not like anybody did anything miraculous."

Off the lines, wide receiver Kennon Christian nabbed two passes for 22 yards. It tripled the junior's career reception total and was his first catch since the 2005 opener against Ball State. He filled in for injured receiver Andy Brodell.

"I think the assistant coaches do well in getting everybody ready to play," Tate said. "Everybody's eager to play, even if he's not starting. You never know when they're going to jump in.

"Those offensive line guys want to play the best they can. They want to keep guys off me."

After all the subbing and shuffling, Ferentz said he expects only one player to miss the game against Ohio State. Alex Kanellis, a second-string defensive end who started against Montana, missed the win over the Illini and likely will sit out the next game after being taken to a Champaign hospital for appendicitis.

Loss at Kinnick Stadium two years ago was a wake-up call
BY JIM NAVEAU - Sep. 25, 2006

COLUMBUS ? It was an embarrassing afternoon of football but it was also the beginning of Troy Smith.
Two years ago, when Ohio State last set foot in Iowa?s Kinnick Stadium, the Buckeyes were second-best in almost every category when the Hawkeyes rolled to a 33-7 win.
This Saturday, No. 1 Ohio State (4-0, 1-0 Big Ten) returns to Iowa City to face the No. 14 Hawkeyes (4-0, 1-0 Big Ten) in a nationally televised nighttime matchup.
Two years ago, with starting quarterback Justin Zwick in full meltdown mode, coach Jim Tressel turned to then-backup QB Smith, who completed 8 of 12 passes and threw a touchdown pass to tight end Rory Nicol for Ohio State?s only score.
However, Smith isn?t a big fan of reviewing his personal history going into this week?s game. He does admit the game two years ago could have created an attitude adjustment in some Buckeyes, though.
?That was a wake-up call,? he said. ?That was a game where they let us know that if you come into any school?s stadium not focused, this could happen to you.
?It could have helped some guys but I can?t say everybody has taken it the same way. I hope guys don?t work off a revenge factor and want to beat up on teams just because of what they?ve done in the past,? he said.
KEEPING THE GOAL (LINE) IN SIGHT: Tailback Antonio Pittman has scored 11 touchdowns in his last nine games after getting only one TD in his first 17 collegiate games.
He gained 110 yards on 20 carries, most of them tough short-yardage runs in a 28-6 win over Penn State on Saturday.
His score against Penn State was a 12-yard run up the middle which ended with him reaching out to put the ball across the goal line as he was being tackled to get Ohio State?s first touchdown.
?My thought was to get in. Getting stopped at the 1-yard line, there is no need for that,? Pittman said. ?If you can stretch out and get it, stretch out and get it. Those guys (the offensive line) worked so hard to get there, to get stopped on the 1-yard line would be a letdown for them.?
LEARN FROM THE BEST: Sophomore linebacker James Laurinaitis isn?t ready to compare this year?s defense with some of the great Ohio State defenses of the past, but he says maybe they learned something from the 2002 national championship team.
?If you?re a championship contender team you have to find a way to win. You look back to the 2002 team here and no matter what, they found a way to win,? Laurinaitis said, looking at Ohio State?s two defensive touchdowns against Penn State.
LOCAL CONNECTIONS: Penn State senior linebacker Joe Cianciolo and sophomore quarterback Paul Cianciolo are sons of Spencerville High School graduate Fred Cianciolo.
Fred Cianciolo played football in college at the Air Force Academy.
ANOTHER LOCAL CONNECTION: Lima?s Denny Morris, a Big Ten official, was the communicator between the on-field officials and the replay official during the Ohio State-Penn State game.

As I've oft stated in the past, I work with numerous Hawkeye fans.

They have never been much for trash-talking; but my coworkers tell me that they are VERY confident about this game. They haven't shown any confidence to my face, but apparently behind my back they think that they will give us a 2004 style woodshedding.

Man I hope I'm wrong about this being a close game IYKWIM.

Me too DBB. From what I've been reading, they've got a couple of key guys dinged up........with the most important being King. He is a gamer.....and him not being at 100% will help us greatly.

They are smoking crack if they think it'll be a 2004 type game. We have an established running game, QB, O-Line, receivers...ect.....which you couldn't say in 2004. Oh yeah, and they are missing about 3-4 (Hodge, Greenway, Matt Roth, Babineaux), All Big Ten players from that squad defensively. Hell, Roth and Babineaux alone combined for 18 sacks that year, and 39 tackles for a loss. Oh, and not to mention Hodge's 116 tackles and 2.5 sacks.......and Greenway's 113, along with 3 sacks.

Through 4 games this year they have a total of 12 sacks as whole defensive unit. Oh yeah, and Mitch King, the guy that I just mentioned, has 5 of those sacks this season. He's tied fo the Big Ten lead in that category. He tweaked his hammy last week against Illinois, he was listed as doubful yesterday. If he plays, he won't be 100%.
Oh, their other productive defensive lineman Ken Iwebema is 2nd in the Big Ten with 6 tackles for a loss, and tied for 4th with 3 sacks. He left the game last week with a bruised shoulder, he'll most likely play this week......but I can't imagine him being 100%.

Comparing 04 to 06 is like comparing apples to oranges. Iowa isn't nearly the team that they were that year.......and this Ohio State team much better than it was in 2004.

yeah, their stellar preformance against Syracuse and beating Illinois less convincingly than Rutgers did would instill confidence in me too

I have stopped by a couple of their boards and other than a few of the usual yahoos they come across as pretty aprehensive. They have weaknesses and they know it. Any confidence comes from the home field and OSUs own struggles the past two weeks.

I would be more nervous if I was playing a team as talented as OSU, and they had struggled for the past 2 weeks. At some point, they are going to break out in a big way......and this week they will be very focused.

do we not have a lot of non tOSU big ten fans that frequent the boards? i expected a lot of talk leading up to the penn state game. was expecting a lot of talk on this game as well with the last two seasons. is it just cause its early in the week yet or are there just not that many fans of opposing big ten teams around? no real point to be made, just curious is all.

I've watched Iowa a few times this year, and as I have said elsewhere, I am not impressed. I am one who thinks very highly of Drew Tate, but unless he can pass to himself and rush for 150 yards, Iowa has little chance in this game barring a disaster by OSU.

The smackdown in 2004 notwithstanding, the best thing that's happened to Iowa in the Ferentz era was avoiding Ohio State completely in 2002. Iowa and Ferentz have milked that 2002 season for all it's worth, and it's going to be a hard fall back to the reality known as 7-5. It's amazing that everyone has forgotten that Iowa -- with all the talent they had last season -- went ... uh ... 7-5?

On the positive side, at least they're undefeated and overranked, so when OSU goes into Kinnick and monkey stomps them by 3 TDs on national TV, everyone will say, "Damn, Ohio State is good!" The Bucks and Troy Smith will have already parlayed the win into a national championship game berth and Heisman award, long before everyone realizes, "Shit, Iowa sucks!"

Does anyone know of a good Iowa message board? I'm interested in how their tailgaiting sessions go; and if much like the Ohio State home games, tickets become available on gameday early saturday at the stadium.

I've been trying to get on their Scout board for a few days now, but you have to apply for acceptance, and apparently the mods are sleeping or something.

http://iowa.scout.com/

They will probably accept me about a week after the game.
