S Caleb Downs (Official Thread)

Well, might as well swing for the fences and keep pursuing Downs until his signature dries on an LOI. Downs is an incredible talent, I watched one of his games this year and after seeing what an incredible athlete he is, it made me cringe a little thinking of him at Bama because I would be shocked if he doesn't up an AA safety at the next level, maybe multiple times. While flipping a Bama commit is a tough chore, the talent here warrants giving it a shot.

Thanks pnut, hope the big guns visit reminds Caleb why he is wanted/needed at tOSU. Or he could be just another 5* in the vast wasteland of Alabama......but from what you opined, if he does visit, then his Bama schollie will be jerked.

HONORABLE MENTIONS
Although he’s now committed to Alabama, Ohio State hasn’t given up pursuing five-star safety Caleb Downs. Ryan Day and Perry Eliano attended one of Downs’ high school games during Ohio State’s off week in a game that featured many highly-touted prospects and remain persistent in trying to get the Georgia product to visit for the Michigan game. Until momentum starts to swing toward that happening, Downs will stay in the honorable mention category.

Meanwhile, the Buckeyes also are trying to get Alabama safety commit Caleb Downs to Columbus for the Nov. 26 game. Downs, a Georgia prospect, just visited Athens for the Bulldogs’ victory against Tennessee on Saturday, so the five-star talent seems at least open to taking other visits. The problem is Downs is currently expected to visit Alabama for the Iron Bowl this year on that date instead. But things can change quickly in recruiting. While it probably remains a longshot at best, getting Downs to visit Columbus instead of Tuscaloosa on Nov. 26 would go a long way towards flipping the top-rated safety in the 2023 class.

Andrew Bone Director of Recruiting Alabama On3

Rumors have swirled on message boards the last few weeks regarding Downs and his commitment status with the Crimson Tide after taking an unofficial visit to Georgia two weekends ago. Most on the UGA side have pretty much indicated the chance of him flipping to the Bulldogs is very low.

I have mentioned the last few months that Ohio State is a bigger threat than Georgia. The Buckeyes have continued to push very hard behind the scenes. Downs, for the most part, has been focused on his senior season. Mill Creek will play Westlake on Friday night in the state playoffs.

Taking visits to Georgia and Ohio State this fall were always part of his plan. We mentioned that before the start of the season and throughout. Some like to lose their minds whenever rumors of a visit happen even though it's been expected.

Downs is currently not expected to visit Alabama this weekend from what I've learned today. Is he visiting Ohio State for its game against Michigan? We do not know. Downs has not confirmed those plans. We do know that he wanted to attend 'big game environments' see what the atmosphere is like at certain schools. He attended Alabama's game against Texas A&M. He was in Athens for the Tennessee game (also attended the season opener against Oregon in Atlanta).

I don't know yet what Downs will do this weekend as it pertains to visiting Ohio State. It's not that difficult to hop on a plane in Atlanta to get to a Columbus for a noon kick-off if he has decided to do that. We will update as soon as it is confirmed.

Is there major concern with Downs potentially flipping? I don't think that's the case based on the interview Downs did with On3 Sports reporter Jeremy Johnson last week. Is he someone we are monitoring closely? For sure especially since he has remained in contact with the Dawgs and Buckeyes. I believe the ultimate key for Downs will come down to final conversations during in-home visits in December.

You can imagine other schools are telling him how Bama is fading, assistants will get fired, etc.. I believe he will want to talk to Coach Saban about everything and as long as he continues to feel comfortable will stick with his decision

So there’s still a chance

Telling him assistants will get fired isn’t negative recruiting, that’s basically a fact. There’s no way heads don’t roll on Sagan’s staff after a two-loss season. Athens isn’t going to compare to what he could see Saturday

Would make up for that loss of Battle for sure if he flips. I honestly dont know why all the best safeties in the country wouldnt want to play for Jim Knowles. Just watch film of our three guys this year and the effect they've all had on the team this year. No negatives
