Turner flashes some promise but Sixers drop opener

PHILADELPHIA ? After a month of struggling in training camp, practices and preseason games, it seemed Evan Turner?s debut with the 76ers against the Miami Heat was destined to be pretty quiet for a guy selected second in the 2010 draft.
Then a funny thing happened when Doug Collins decided to insert Lou Williams and Turner into the backcourt midway through the first quarter when starter Jrue Holiday came out and played like he never saw a basketball before ... the kid who so often seemed lost on the floor during exhibitions stepped onto the grand stage and suddenly found his game.
Turner led the Sixers with 16 points as Collins ran with the rookie for 31 minutes. After missing his first two shots from the floor, the Ohio State product made seven of his last eight attempts.
?Evan, from where he started out in Orlando (Summer League) until now, is light-years (difference),? Collins said after his debut as Sixers coach ended with a 97-87 defeat. ?And he?s going to keep getting better because once he starts to believe he belongs, he?ll take off.?
The sight of Turner asserting himself was a huge relief for the Sixers, who were genuinely nervous after watching him play like a shell of the star he was for the Buckeyes in preseason. Collins was confounded enough that he sought some insight from those who had nurtured and observed Turner at lower levels.
?I talked to many people about him. I was trying to do my homework,? Collins said. ?And they said the scouting report on Evan was that he?ll be a pain in the ass until he feels like he belongs, and then he will be fantastic.?
Ignoring critics, Turner scores 16 points

Before 76ers swingman Evan Turner made his regular-season debut Wednesday, the rookie had heard all the negative talk.
Turner, the No. 2 overall pick in June's draft, knew critics had already called him a bust. On Internet message boards, fans vented about how the difference between Turner and John Wall, the first overall pick, was vast.
Turner took in all the bashing and stayed quiet.
"A lot of people say negative things about me," Turner said. "You know, sometimes I want to say it's bugging me now. But it's not the classy thing to do - that's not the thing to do in general. Just keep working hard."
So Turner kept his composure, even when he knew he would come off the bench on opening night, and responded with a team-high 16 points, 7 rebounds, and 4 assists in a 97-87 loss to the Miami Heat at the Wells Fargo Center.

Turner shows flashes of greatness for Sixers

EVAN TURNER has "never, ever" played against John Wall. Not in college, not in pickup, not anywhere.
Turner is the 76ers' rookie guard, the No. 2 overall pick in the NBA's June draft. Wall is the Washington Wizards' rookie guard, the No. 1 overall pick.
They will face each tonight in Washington.
But don't expect a mano-a-mano battle. Don't look for a classic "your turn, my turn" confrontation.
And Sixers coach Doug Collins doesn't want anyone searching for the gap from No. 1 to No. 2, even if Wall is starting and thrilling crowds with his speed and explosiveness, and Turner is coming off the bench, splitting time between the backcourt positions.
"I don't want it to be a 'hissing' contest, all of a sudden you're going back at each other," Collins said bluntly after yesterday's practice session at Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine.
Plus, Collins said, "They probably won't be guarding each other."
"The media focuses in on those guys when they're playing [against each other], and who's doing well at what particular time," Collins said. "I told Evan, 'Just play.' "
Turner is outgoing, thoughtful in dealing with reporters. He knew what was coming yesterday.
"I haven't done a one-on-one [comparison] since maybe high school," he said. "I just feel like it's pointless. At the end of the day, you can only worry about yourself, control yourself and what you do. I just worry about my teammates and worry about trying to be the best I can for the Philadelphia 76ers. I don't worry about anybody else."
