G/F Evan "The Villain" Turner (2010 Naismith Winner)

Turner flashes some promise but Sixers drop opener

PHILADELPHIA ? After a month of struggling in training camp, practices and preseason games, it seemed Evan Turner?s debut with the 76ers against the Miami Heat was destined to be pretty quiet for a guy selected second in the 2010 draft.

Then a funny thing happened when Doug Collins decided to insert Lou Williams and Turner into the backcourt midway through the first quarter when starter Jrue Holiday came out and played like he never saw a basketball before ... the kid who so often seemed lost on the floor during exhibitions stepped onto the grand stage and suddenly found his game.

Turner led the Sixers with 16 points as Collins ran with the rookie for 31 minutes. After missing his first two shots from the floor, the Ohio State product made seven of his last eight attempts.

?Evan, from where he started out in Orlando (Summer League) until now, is light-years (difference),? Collins said after his debut as Sixers coach ended with a 97-87 defeat. ?And he?s going to keep getting better because once he starts to believe he belongs, he?ll take off.?

The sight of Turner asserting himself was a huge relief for the Sixers, who were genuinely nervous after watching him play like a shell of the star he was for the Buckeyes in preseason. Collins was confounded enough that he sought some insight from those who had nurtured and observed Turner at lower levels.

?I talked to many people about him. I was trying to do my homework,? Collins said. ?And they said the scouting report on Evan was that he?ll be a pain in the ass until he feels like he belongs, and then he will be fantastic.?

Ignoring critics, Turner scores 16 points
By Mario Aguirre
Inquirer Staff Writer

Before 76ers swingman Evan Turner made his regular-season debut Wednesday, the rookie had heard all the negative talk.

Turner, the No. 2 overall pick in June's draft, knew critics had already called him a bust. On Internet message boards, fans vented about how the difference between Turner and John Wall, the first overall pick, was vast.

Turner took in all the bashing and stayed quiet.

"A lot of people say negative things about me," Turner said. "You know, sometimes I want to say it's bugging me now. But it's not the classy thing to do - that's not the thing to do in general. Just keep working hard."

So Turner kept his composure, even when he knew he would come off the bench on opening night, and responded with a team-high 16 points, 7 rebounds, and 4 assists in a 97-87 loss to the Miami Heat at the Wells Fargo Center.

Watched the game last night and I see why Evan was struggling. Any rookie who's not a gun would struggle with that team. They don't really have an identity and I had no clue what the goal of the offense they ran was.

If your trying to get into the flow of their system, you'll struggle. Evan needs to change his mentality to "I need to score" and let his team mates feed off of that. When Even stepped it up the rest of the team followed. Evan and the 76rs were at there best when they just attacked the basket and kept the offense simple.

And Turners cross reminded me of Iverson crossing Jordan. I loved it.

turner looked 10 times better then he did in pre-season last night...watched this game and the cavs game last night...my favorite move was when turner crossed over on wade and hit the jumper from the corner...that was awesome

go to philly.com to read about the game. doug Collins, 76ers coach, had a lot of good words for ET.

the article talks about how he crossed Wade up, then hit the jumper.

Those Philly fans can be tough --- I hope he can live through the tough times.

Anyone who doubts Evan Turner is a fucking dumbass. He started off kinda slow here too but when he got it he really got it. Kid is a great player I have no doubt in my mind he is going to be a top-10 or 15 player in the league. His work ethic is amazing.

Philly fans just don't know it yet how good of a player they have. But don't worry he will show them.

Favorite quote from Doug Collins.....

I talked to many people about him. I was trying to do my homework, Collins said. And they said the scouting report on Evan was that he'll be a pain in the ass until he feels like he belongs, and then he will be fantastic.

i would like to see the sixers either leave turner on the bench and come out as 6th man, or if he starts then move Igudola to SF and put turner in at SG...i dont think Turner will be as effective as a PG in the NBA and i think he would flourish the best at SG which i think is his natural position...sixers lineup will be smaller by a tad then but i think they will be more effective that way...have lou williams come in as backup PG/SG for holiday or turner

I like in the above video at the end where he says "The Best out West, in the game, it's Kobe". Those two have had a love affair going on. Back when Kobe publically said he would take ET over Wall, while Quitness said he would take Wall. Then I know Kobe sent ET a case of shoes (after the season of course). Kinda makes me like Kobe a little bit.

Turner shows flashes of greatness for Sixers
By PHIL JASNER
Philadelphia Daily News
[email protected]

EVAN TURNER has "never, ever" played against John Wall. Not in college, not in pickup, not anywhere.

Turner is the 76ers' rookie guard, the No. 2 overall pick in the NBA's June draft. Wall is the Washington Wizards' rookie guard, the No. 1 overall pick.

They will face each tonight in Washington.

But don't expect a mano-a-mano battle. Don't look for a classic "your turn, my turn" confrontation.

And Sixers coach Doug Collins doesn't want anyone searching for the gap from No. 1 to No. 2, even if Wall is starting and thrilling crowds with his speed and explosiveness, and Turner is coming off the bench, splitting time between the backcourt positions.

"I don't want it to be a 'hissing' contest, all of a sudden you're going back at each other," Collins said bluntly after yesterday's practice session at Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine.

Plus, Collins said, "They probably won't be guarding each other."

"The media focuses in on those guys when they're playing [against each other], and who's doing well at what particular time," Collins said. "I told Evan, 'Just play.' "

Turner is outgoing, thoughtful in dealing with reporters. He knew what was coming yesterday.

"I haven't done a one-on-one [comparison] since maybe high school," he said. "I just feel like it's pointless. At the end of the day, you can only worry about yourself, control yourself and what you do. I just worry about my teammates and worry about trying to be the best I can for the Philadelphia 76ers. I don't worry about anybody else."

ET came off the bench again. His 9 points didn't come until late in the second half. He really needs to assert himself more when he's out there on offense and D. You can tell there are times when he's more worried about getting his assignment right than making a play. Once he shakes this timidness loose he'll be a very good pro.
