G/F Evan "The Villain" Turner (2010 Naismith Winner)

Turner, who was spending his next-to-last day in Columbus (the lease on the apartment he shared with Jon Diebler expired), talked about the rough go he had with the Philadelphia 76ers summer-league team in Orlando shortly after he was taken No.2 in the NBA draft.

"We did a scrimmage vs. Utah and I remember getting picked up full-court and guys all up in my chest," he said. "I was like, 'Man, these guys are after me,' and they were saying, 'Hey, you?re the No.2 pick.'

"It never hit me that people are fighting to put food on the table, people are trying to earn a spot on the team, and I?m their target to try to make the team. I was like, 'Wow.' It?s a different level, a different mentality, when it comes to people feeding their family and stuff like that. People perform differently under pressure."

Turner, who attributed his poor play to not playing much competitive basketball since the season ended to avoid injury before the draft, said he expects to regain his form by the time the season starts.

"It?ll be fine," he said. "I have confidence in myself. I know how I can play. I?m all ready for a battle."

Evan Turner, the team?s No. 1 draft pick in June, signs autographs at the Sixers? Beach Bash in Avalon on Saturday.

AVALON - Evan Turner wasn't even a member of the Philadelphia 76ers yet when general manager Ed Stefanski told him to mark July 31 on his calendar.

Turner, the No. 2 pick in the NBA draft by the Sixers, was the main attraction for the Sixers Beach Bash on Saturday at Jack's Place, a bar across from the bay on 36th Street.

"We kind of knew who we were drafting, obviously, with (John) Wall going No. 1 to Washington," Stefanski said. "I told (Turner's) agent and his manager there was no (argument) - he was coming on this date. I said to make sure that he will be here.

"And Evan is here, and it's great for the organization to have this buzz. The fans are super-excited about him coming."

Turner signed autographs under a tent in the bar's parking lot for a line of people that flowed into the street.

"It's even more than what I expected," said Turner, a shooting guard and the consensus NCAA player of the year last season at Ohio State University. "This is a fun day and a fun event. I'm enjoying myself. I'm glad we have fans out here in New Jersey."

AVALON, N.J. ? When the 76ers held their annual Beach Bash at Jack?s Place Saturday, it was largely a one-man show.

Evan Turner was the only player in attendance, and frankly their prized rookie is the guy most fans want to have meeting and greeting them.

Sixers rookie Turner is main attraction at Beach Bash in Avalon, New Jersey

The lines wound around the parking lot of Jack's Place in Avalon, N.J., on Saturday afternoon as Sixers fans waited to get a glimpse of and an autograph from rookie Evan Turner. They were there for the organization's annual Beach Bash celebration, which benefited the team's various charities.
"That's the main reason I came here, to see Evan Turner," said Jack Walsh, 11, of Marlton, N.J. "I think he's going to be really good."

Optimism was about as plentiful as sunshine as fans spoke of a major turnaround this season after the 27-win campaign of a year ago. Turner also sees bright times ahead for his new team.

"Man, this is pretty exciting," said Turner, as he signed autographs and shook hands. "You can really feel the energy from the fans here. Everywhere I go in and around Philadelphia, Sixers fans are really excited for the upcoming season. They aren't as excited as me, but no one could be."

Turner Learning the Ropes from McKie
Monday, August 2, 2010

Evan Turner woke up the past couple days and essentially said to himself, ?I am definitely not in Columbus anymore.?

The Sixers? rookie has been in the fast lane since coming to the East Coast late last week. He was in New York City on Thursday meeting NBA sponsors. He spent Friday night at the Borgata in Atlantic City and attended the Sixers Beach Bash in Avalon on Saturday before returning to Philadelphia to get ready for his new workout regimen which includes putting in gym time with Aaron McKie

?We got a lot of shots up, did a lot of repetition,? Turner said of his Monday workout with Coach McKie. ?He taught me some tricks ? he has a lot of tricks ? stuff with your feet, using the body. I learned a lot for the first day.?

McKie is familiar with Turner, having coached him during the Orlando Pro Summer League. During that week, Turner struggled. He averaged 9.4 points and 5.6 rebounds. He totaled 14 assists but committed 17 turnovers. He shot 33 percent from the floor and 25 percent from 3-point range, though he did make all 19 of his free-throw attempts.

Evan Turner as Grant Hill 2.0?
August, 3, 2010

Philadunkia's Tom Sunnergren caught up with second overall pick Evan Turner at a Sixers' beach event, and they got to talking about players Turner patterns himself after.

I asked him if there any other players in the game, past or present who he views as an analog for himself, that he patterns himself after?

?A lot of people say Brandon Roy, and he?s a great player, but??

What about Grant Hill?

?Yes,? his eyes widened and he smiled, ?I definitely see Grant Hill. People have been telling me that for a long time. I like the comparison. Coach Collins made me a highlight-tape of him playing in Detroit that I watch. I would love to have a career like his. I like his game a lot.?

This is very good news. Grant Hill, while not only having a very similar build and skill set as Turner, represents just about everything that is good about basketball. To quote a certain former-Sixers-coach, he plays the game the right way. He also played it, briefly, better than anybody else. He was the most productive player in basketball during the 1996-1997 season; a season during which he was coached by Doug Collins.

SLAM: What you been up to since Summer League?
Evan Turner: I?ve been working out. I?ve been in Philly working out. Just working on my game, trying to get in better shape.

SLAM: Yeah, after seeing you play in Summer League, did Coach Collins or anyone else have any advice for what they want you to work on?
EV: They just said get in better shape, and keep getting better. Just try to work on coming off screens and stuff like that, and being open to a new system.

SLAM: You settle down in Philly yet? You know the area a little bit?
EV: I?ve been around the city just a tad, so I?m starting to get it know it a little bit more. I usually only go to the places I need to go to.

SLAM: You said you were working out with some local guys?
EV: Yeah, I worked out with a few foreign and college players from the area, like [from] St. Joe?s and stuff. Played on a couple open gyms with Jameer [Nelson], Matt Carrol, a few overseas players.

SLAM: You been staying in touch with Jrue Holiday and other teammates that you met down in Summer League?
EV: Yeah, we talk. I have BBM, and Twitter and stuff like that, so we all definitely talk. I met a few other players like Willie Green. It?s cool.

SLAM: Any advice and stuff, even though you?re older than Jrue?
EV: Well Jrue, he just says work hard and I?ve been working a lot with Coach McKie, and he just said listen to him. He says Coach McKie?s helped him a lot as well.

SLAM: Did he tell you what to expect from the season at all?
EV: He just said it?s gonna be tough; it?s a man?s game. But you just have to keep playing and keep getting better.

SLAM: You talk to any of the Ohio State players that are in the NBA to hear what they have to say?
EV: Yeah, they?re just telling me about hazing, and what to do and what not to do. Or how to avoid certain things. (Laughs.)

SLAM: You been hit at all yet with anything? Or not even?
EV: Nah, not yet. I know my job is to get donuts and stuff, so I gotta get prepared for that.

SLAM: I hear that. You talk to Coach Matta at all?
EV: I haven?t talked to Coach Matta in about a week or two, but they?re doing well. They just got a few more recruits. He?s always on the on the up-and-up. He?s a positive guy, so?

Top Chinese Athletic Brand Signs NBA's Evan Turner

CNBC Sports Business Reporter

Turner%20Li-Ning.jpg

For years, we've been talking about the importance of American sports brands, including shoe companies like Nike getting into China. We haven't talked as much about Chinese shoe companies getting into this country.

That's about to change. CNBC has exclusively learned that Li-Ning, China's top athletic brand, has signed Evan Turner, the No. 2 pick in this year's NBA Draft to a multi-year deal that will make him the face of the brand.

Why is this a potentially game changer?

Because the Chinese shoe brands ? not willing to compete with the Nikes and adidases of the world ? haven't been willing to pay for top talent to endorse their shoes. Instead, they have waited until some of the league's veterans were willing to go to them.

On his strengths and weaknesses: "I think my mid-range is pretty good. I think I have a pretty good IQ and I can rebound well for my size. I need to get better at long-range shooting and defense. NBA games are completely different games; you think a little quicker, be faster and put yourself in the right positions."

On the differences between Doug Collins and Thad Matta: "Coach Matta was a little more relaxed and gave you a little more freedom. Coach Collins is a little tougher because he wants you to learn more about the game. He knows a lot about the game and wants to help you improve right away. He tries to perfect your game, and he can because he knows a lot about basetball."

Evan Turner conference call - Liberty Ballers

Q: Should we be concerned about Turner, who had a difficult time in the Orlando Summer League?

A: "Go back a year, when Jrue Holiday, who has turned out to be a very good player, had a struggling summer. Evan wasn't in tiptop shape, but when you look at most of these kids, there's a period of adjustment. They're playing against better players, usually more experienced players. They're playing against men.

"I don't take a lot from the summer. Some guys look really good; others don't look as good. I see Turner as a guy, playing with good players, who can fit right in because of his assets. He can pass, he's a team player, he has great size and he can rebound. He does a lot of things that help you win. He's an improving shooter, has a great work ethic. I think he's going to be a very good player."

Turner is a shoe-in for improvement with Sixers

Evan Turner reads 'The Cat in the Hat' to promote a future book drive.

Evan Turner wants his Li-Ning signature shoe to be "clean-cut, refined, to reflect some of me."

"Not flashy," the 76ers first-round draft choice said during media day yesterday at the Wells Fargo Center. "No flaps or lots of colors. Classy."

The signature shoe is a year away, so Turner has time to create his own signature, to show there's much more to him than what he showed in the Orlando Summer League, that there is significant substance to the 6-7 guard from Ohio State who led the Big Ten in scoring and rebounding as a junior and finished second in assists and steals.

That propelled him to the No. 2 spot in the NBA's June draft, swept up by the Sixers after Washington took Kentucky's John Wall. And that helped agent David Falk broker a deal with Li-Ning, one of China's top athletic brands. That was significant, because the Chinese shoe brands hadn't been willing to compete with Nike, adidas or Reebok for young players, choosing instead to go with veterans. Li-Ning had attracted Shaquille O'Neal; other brands reached for Jason Kidd, Shane Battier, Kevin Garnett and Steve Francis.

"We talked to a number of companies, but Evan felt Li-Ning hit a home run in their presentation," said Falk, who termed the deal "unprecedented," but declined to reveal its length.

Falk generated Michael Jordan's association with Nike, then made headlines when he negotiated a lifetime contract for Allen Iverson with Reebok.

"It has to be the best fit for the client," Falk said. "[Turner] will have his own line of products. Very few players sell shoes, but they can promote a brand. If this is a success, it can open the door for young players to look more on a global scale."
