G/F Evan "The Villain" Turner (2010 Naismith Winner)

ET begins summer league ball today...

Evan Turner of Ohio State will obviously be the main draw for Philadelphia and with good reason. Turner destroyed opposing defenses last season to the tune of 20 points, 9 rebounds and 6 assists per game. He should have no trouble moving into the Sixers rotation and should feast on the Summer League opposition. Philly?s roster also features Jrue Holiday, the second-year guard out of UCLA. Holiday didn?t get the chance to shine for the Bruins in his sole season in Ben Howland?s methodical offense, but was one of the top recruits in the high school class of 2008. Holiday could be a piece of a rebuilding Sixers squad, so it will be important to see how he does next week. Guard Jodie Meeks, another second-year pro who averaged 24 points per game at Kentucky in 2008-09, will also suit up for the Sixers. Meeks is a fantastic scorer who can shoot, but is an unreliable ball-handler and sub-par defender. Marreese Speights will be entering his third year in the league and is a regular member of the Sixers? rotation. It is a little odd to see Speights in the Summer League, but new coach Doug Collins may want him to gain experience in the new system.

"I'm all right, I'm doing all right," Turner insisted. "But these practices are starting to kill me a little bit. I'm definitely looking forward to playing in a game and see how I match up against this type of competition."

It turned out to be a bit of a struggle. He didn't score the way he's accustomed to, though he did finish with 12 points. His rustiness showed on the defensive end as he picked up four fouls in the first half, during which he played close to 15 minutes, almost all of them paired with Holiday.

Turner collected eight rebounds and four assists and turned the ball over only twice.

"I really haven't played five-on-five ball for a long time, so I was trying to get acclimated to playing off the ball," he said. "I think as the game wore on, I think I did pretty well. I'm just happy my team won. I think I played decent defense and I think I hit the boards.

"I'm still getting used to cutting quicker off ball screens and stuff like that. It's going to take time to pick up the offense. I think rusty is a good word. But I competed, I think my teammates competed and we got the job done."

At Ohio State, Turner was asked to handle the ball and run the offense. That job, of course, belongs to Holiday with this team, and by the looks of it, he will be there for quite some time.

Evan Turner had a bounce back game in his second night in a Sixers uniform. The rookie guard tweeted to Kevin Durant after the game the following about his performance that resulted in 13 points, three boards, four assists and four turnovers in 30 minutes of action.

?I did alright. I attacked the hole more,? Turner tweeted. ?I got two fouls for pushing off lol. Its all good tho. We won and I feel more confident in the paint.?

Sixers rookie Evan Turner said he felt more confident against the Celtics than he did in his debut against the Nets.
In all honesty, Turner had not played a game since March and was rusty. He needs to get back in the flow, especially since he spent the last couple weeks on the tour of American ballparks.

Fatigue showing for Turner, but Sixers aren't worried
By BOB COONEY

ORLANDO - Since last Thursday, the team the Sixers have assembled for the Pro Summer League has been on the basketball court as much as a family visiting theme parks down here is on its feet. There have been some two-a-days, and, on the morning of games, they get in another hour. It's been a lot of basketball, a lot of learning from new coach Doug Collins, and not a lot of time to rest the bodies.
"I'm so tired," center Marreese Speights said after yesterday's 89-80 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder at the RDV Sportsplex.

He's not the only one. And the one player seemingly fatigued the most is Evan Turner. He struggled again in yesterday's game, scoring four points (on just six shots) in a little more than 27 minutes. He committed six fouls (it's a no foul-out league) and turned the ball over three times. He is a step slow and, at times, seems to think the game will wait for him. Only that doesn't happen when you're playing against guys who are fighting for a career in basketball.

Still, there is not even a hint of panic from Collins or general manager Ed Stefanski that the No. 2 overall pick will stay in his funk.

"Nothing has surprised me," Stefanski said. "I think Evan is just trying to figure out the whole thing, from how the NBA game works, from the officials to the defense and things like that. Last year, Jrue Holiday went through the same thing. Jrue was struggling getting by people and now people just can't stay in front of him. The same thing Jrue went through last year, Evan is going through now."

Part of the problem, Stefanski and Collins have said, is Turner's conditioning.

"I don't think he's in game condition," Stefanski said. "He hasn't played a game in a long time and now we've played three games in 3 days. Before that, he really hadn't played at all since Ohio State lost in the [NCAA] tournament [on March 26]. And it's not his fault. With him predicted to be such a high pick [his handlers] shut him down [to prevent injury]. You can work out all you want, [but] unless you play five-on-five you're not going to get there. I think he's definitely been hurt by that.

"You can see how good he is and how he makes plays. Defensively was one thing I wanted to see, and he's done very well. He rebounds the ball [eight more yesterday]. The other stuff is not coming because of the pace of the game, but that will come."

Collins fully agrees.

"You've got to play with a motor," he said. "When we get Evan where we want to get him in shape, he'll start playing with that motor that you have to have. You're playing a high-energy position. Right now, you can see the angst is there. Anybody who has played in this league has had to go through it. He'll grow from it and he's going to be fine. I'm glad it's happening now because he's got time to do something about it. He's got about 90 good days [until training camp] to get himself in the kind of shape that he needs to be in to play for us and do what we need him to do."
