76ers' Turner unhappy with his play
By Kevin Tatum
Inquirer Staff Writer

Evan Turner, the 6-foot-7 swingman selected by the 76ers with the second overall pick in last month's NBA draft, was hard on himself when he was asked Thursday to critique his performance this week in the Orlando Pro Summer League.

"Horrible," Turner said. "It's not what I expected of myself. I'm not proud of the way I've played. But I'm glad for the experience."

While Turner may not be living up to his own standards, the Chicago native has shown some of the all-around game that last season earned him consensus college-player-of-the-year honors as a junior at Ohio State.

In his final season with the Buckeyes, Turner averaged 20.4 points, 9.2 rebounds, and 6.0 assists to become the first player since Hall of Famer Oscar Robertson (1959-60) to put together a 20-point, nine-rebound, six-assist season.

Entering Thursday night's 77-76 loss to the Charlotte Bobcats, Turner was averaging 9.6 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 3.3 assists for the Sixers. He had 12- and 13-point games, twice snatched eight rebounds, and chipped in with four assists a couple of times.

Sixers rookie Turner sees gain from pain of Summer League
By BOB COONEY
Philadelphia Daily News

ORLANDO - Two good things happened to 76ers rookie Evan Turner yesterday:

1. He played his best game of the Summer League when he scored 13 points and grabbed six rebounds in the Sixers' 85-56 loss to the Utah Jazz.

2. The Summer League ended.

The relief on Turner's face was evident after yesterday morning's game. He looked as though he had just gone through some of the roughest days of his young life.

Because he had.

"I know I have to be in shape to compete with this type of competition," he said. "It's a lot more competition, and everybody down here is playing so hard. They're playing to get or keep a job and put food on the table, and I got my butt kicked. It's the first time in a long time I've gotten my butt kicked. I'm glad it happened now instead of in November, December or January."

Turner's lack of conditioning was due to the fact he had rarely been on a basketball court since his season ended at Ohio State on March 26, when the Buckeyes lost in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament to Tennessee. Knowing he would be a high draft pick, Turner was advised to stay away from highly competitive games to avoid injury.

Meanwhile, nearly all of the players assembled for the eight teams that competed in Orlando are trying to make it in the NBA. They prepared themselves for weeks just for this week.

It wasn't a good mix for Turner.

He finished the five games in 5 days averaging 9.4 points and 5.6 rebounds. He turned the ball over a team-high 17 times and made only 13 of 39 shots from the floor (33.3 percent). Still, new coach Doug Collins wouldn't trade the week his first draft pick suffered through for anything.

NBA summer league: Winners & losers

LOSER: Evan Turner(notes)
While Wall lived up to expectations as the top pick of the draft, the No. 2 selection had a much more difficult time.
Turner was the biggest disappointment of the Orlando summer league, averaging just 9.4 points on 33.3 percent shooting. He also averaged more turnovers (3.4) than assists (2.8). The Philadelphia 76ers rookie didn’t appear to be in great shape. He rebounded well, but never scored more than 13 points in five games.

I wouldn't be to concerned. ET is going to be one of the good ones. 5 games isn't enough to really judge anything on IMO

Eh, he averaged 9.4 ppg, 5.6 rpg. While not setting the world on fire, I think calling him a "loser" is, at best, an overstatement. Besides, Wall wasn't exactly shooting lights out--37% from the field and a horrid 12.5% from 3-point land (to go along with his 5.2 turnovers per game).

ON EVAN TURNER...

Koufos wasn?t the only former Buckeye to come up Wednesday as Matta was asked about Evan Turner's early struggles in NBA Summer League, where he shot just 33 percent from the field in five games.

?It was an eye-opening experience for him,? Matta said of the former National Player of the Year.

?He was told not to play any basketball before the draft so he wouldn't get injured, so this was really the first time he played since our last game against Tennessee. He probably was not in great shape and was a bit rusty.?

Matta didn't back down from his belief that Turner will have a great pro career.

?I'm not worried, and neither are the people Philadelphia.?

Ohio State men's basketball personnel and injury updates.
