G/F Evan "The Villain" Turner (2010 Naismith Winner)

ET came off the bench again. His 9 points didn't come until late in the second half. He really needs to assert himself more when he's out there on offense and D. You can tell there are times when he's more worried about getting his assignment right than making a play. Once he shakes this timidness loose he'll be a very good pro.
What you describe is not timidness, it's learning the system and slowing the game down.

Exactly, and that causes him to play timid at times.

tim?id (t m d). adj. tim?id?er, tim?id?est. 1. Lacking self-confidence; shy. 2. Fearful and hesitant

Once he becomes more assertive he'll be fine. ET's attitude now would be fine if he was on the Lakers or Celts. When your on a bottom dweller you need to be that spark at times. Especially when your star vet AI9 (Andre Iguadala??sp??) hasn't assumed that go to roll yet.

Tweet: Evan Turner to get first career start vs. Knicks
November 6th, 2010 ? No Comments ? NBA, Philadelphia 76ers

CSNPhilly.com?s Dei Lynam tweeted minutes ago that Sixers rookie Evan Turner will get his first career start on Sunday against the New York Knicks.

?Evan Turner will get his first NBA regular season start Sunday afternoon at Madison Square Garden? Lynam tweeted.

We can only imagine this is bad news for Andre Iguodala, who left Friday?s loss to Cleveland in the third quarter with an Achilles injury. He had an MRI on Saturday and we?re guessing he?ll be out of action for a bit.

Iguodala had been starting at the two guard spot. We have to envision Turner starting alongside Jrue Holiday in the backcourt, with Thaddeus Young taking over at SF for Andres Niccioni, who had an MRI on a sprained ankle on Saturday as well.

The number two pick in the NBA Draft is averaging 8.5 points, five boards, 2.5 assists and two turnovers in 26 minutes this season.

Progress report on Turner reaches Buckeyes' coach
By: TOM MOORE
The Intelligencer

PHILADELPHIA - Doug Collins sent Thad Matta a text message Sunday.

Collins, the Sixers' coach, said he told the Ohio State coach how proud Matta must be of the way former Buckeye Evan Turner played in Turner's first NBA start.

Turner, filling in for the injured Andre Iguodala, had 14 points and career highs in rebounds (a team-best 10) and minutes (35) in a 106-96 road victory over the Knicks.

Matta texted back to "just keep showing him the 'how' and the 'why' because the kid wants to win," according to Collins.

After Monday's practice, Turner said he knows exactly what Matta means.

"I'm kind of always trying to understand why we're doing what we're trying to do and why things occur," Turner said.

Collins broke into a grin when asked about Turner on Monday.

"Evan's an amazing kid," Collins said. "He wants to be out on the floor and he defends. Coaches love guys like that. The kid's a winner."

With Iguodala saying he may not be able to play Wednesday against the Thunder in Oklahoma City, Turner could be on the verge of his second start.

Even if he returns to being a reserve, Turner has been more comfortable and productive than he was in summer league ball and for most of the preseason - especially when he's playing off the ball at shooting guard.

"I'm getting in a rhythm early," Turner said. "I think I'm doing all right."

Through his first seven NBA games, Turner, the second pick in June's draft, is averaging 9.3 points, 6.0 rebounds (second on the Sixers), 2.6 assists and a team-high 2.4 turnovers.

Turner starting to make strides
By Mario Aguirre
Inquirer Staff Writer

As a bench player for his first six games this season, 76ers rookie Evan Turner has had sporadic scoring bursts - a career high one night, no points the next.

Yet with Andre Iguodala out with tendinitis in his right Achilles tendon, Turner found some balance in his first career start Sunday in New York. In 35 minutes, he poured in 14 points, grabbed 10 rebounds, and delivered three assists in the Sixers' 106-96 win.

On Wednesday night, Turner will make his second start as the Sixers resume their five-game trip in Oklahoma City.

Coach Doug Collins said Tuesday that he thinks Iguodala will be back Friday, barring "any setbacks." He also said the same on Monday when asked whether he thought Iguodala would play Wednesday.

The uncertainty is one of the subplots of this Sixers season. Some of it centers on Turner, the No. 2 overall pick after John Wall.

Turner quietly has made strides. And he showed enough Sunday to prompt Collins to reach out to Turner's coach at Ohio State.

"I talked to Thad Matta via text last night," Collins said. "I said, 'You would have been very proud of Evan as he walked into the Garden. He had a key steal, big rebounds down the stretch, [and he] stepped up to the line and made some free throws. And [Matta] said, 'Keep showing him the how and the why . . . because the kid loves to win.' "

"I'm kind of always trying to understand everything we're about to do," Turner said. "Once I have a good understanding for it and why we're doing it, it helps me . . . execute better."

Sixers Notes: Holiday, Turner are starting duo
76ers Notes

DALLAS - The 76ers' backcourt of the future is now.

Coach Doug Collins appears to have settled on second-year point guard Jrue Holiday and rookie shooting guard Evan Turner as starters.

It took an injury to swingman Andre Iguodala, formerly the team's shooting guard, to open space in the starting lineup for Turner. But even with Iguodala healthy Friday night against the Dallas Mavericks, Collins kept intact his young backcourt of Holiday and Turner.

Iguodala returned Friday to the starting lineup, but he was moved to small forward.

Collins noted that Holiday and Turner "are playing very well together."

"And early in the year, in preseason, they weren't," he said. "And I think they've really found a nice fit together, and that's exciting for us because a big part of our future hinges on those two guys."

Turner-Holiday is Sixers' starting backcourt on merit
By BOB COONEY
Philadelphia Daily News
[email protected]

DALLAS - What many thought would happen slightly earlier in the season happened last night for the 76ers in their game against the Mavericks.

Coach Doug Collins trotted out a starting lineup that featured Evan Turner and Jrue Holiday together in the backcourt.

It was actually the third time the two have been there, but last night had a little more meaning. In the past two games, Turner was shoved in as a starter while Andre Iguodala was in street clothes nursing a strained right Achilles' tendon. Iguodala returned last night, and Turner kept his spot.

Forward Andres Nocioni, whom Collins envisioned at the beginning of the season as a 20-minute reserve, was removed from the starting lineup.

"Evan and Jrue now are playing very well together," Collins said. "Early in the year and in preseason they weren't and now I think they've really found a nice fit together. It's very exciting for us right now because a big part of our future hinges on those two guys, their development and how well they can play together and hopefully they can play together for a long, long time."

Sixers' young guns Holiday and Turner were schooled by Spurs stars Parker and Ginobili
By Kate Fagan
Inquirer Staff Writer

On Saturday night, no duo was more outdueled than the 76ers' starting backcourt.

Second-year point guard Jrue Holiday and rookie Evan Turner, the Sixers' young-gun starters, were dribbled around and shot over by the San Antonio Spurs' veteran combo of point guard Tony Parker and shooting guard Manu Ginobili. By game's end, the Spurs had beaten the Sixers, 116-93.

But the most accurate reflection of just how lopsided this game was - and just how uneven this matchup was - came at the end of the third quarter, when the game was ostensibly over and not yet tainted by garbage minutes.

At that time, the Sixers trailed, 96-64.

Through those three quarters, Turner and Holiday had combined to score two points on 1-for-12 shooting with 3 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal, and 5 turnovers between them. During that same time, Parker and Ginobili scored a combined 42 points on 16-for-23 shooting with 4 rebounds, 8 assists, 5 steals, and 4 turnovers between them.

Evan Turner markets Li-Ning shoes
By Chris Palmer

Philadelphia 76ers rookie Evan Turner films a commercial for his Li Ning shoe line.

LOS ANGELES -- Outside the W hotel in Hollywood on a crisp autumn morning trucks of a film crew line the streets as workers lay down miles of cable, adjust lights and set up Christmas decorations for a commercial that will shoot at the ritzy hotel. Extras in elf costumes carrying volleyball-sized Christmas ornaments are being funneled to and fro by well-dressed production assistants who look like they've stepped off the pages of some high fashion catalogue.

The place is buzzing and if it weren't Hollywood, you'd just as easily convince yourself that this was some sideways surreal fantasy and you haven't yet put the smackdown on your snooze button.

In the middle of the hubbub, Philadelphia 76ers rookie Evan Turner, dressed in a black sweatsuit and flip-flops, slumps on a couch in the center of a lobby. His agent, David Falk, is across the lobby on the phone with a furrowed brow and a USA Today tucked under his arm.

Turner is in town to shoot his first commercial. Not the Christmas-themed one, but a spot for Chinese sneaker company Li-Ning, which is shooting 10 miles north of Hollywood. Turner is equal parts groggy and taken aback but eager to be a part of something new.

"Everything is so different out here," he said. "It takes a while to get used to it."

Our ride for the day, a late model Infiniti QX56, pulls up and we're off. Right away Falk, one of the game's best storytellers, launches into tales about the glory days when he repped the likes of Michael Jordan and Allen Iverson. As we sail down the on ramp to the 101, Turner yawns in the back seat. Falk turns around from the front passenger seat, "I know, he's heard all these stories before," the agent said.

Upon arriving at the soundstage, Turner darts for the breakfast truck. After a quick meal of sausage links, eggs and orange juice, he swaps out his sweatsuit for red Li Ning basketball jersey and shorts and heads to a raised Plexiglass platform where a camera will capture his dribble moves from below.

The commercial has Turner slicing up imaginary defenders while earning the respect of his competition, an important aspect of Chinese culture. Several extras, mostly former college ballers, have been paid for the day to be juked by Turner's dribble moves.

The 6-7 rookie point forward is the Chinese sneaker company's biggest signing to date and the Beijing-based outfit hopes he can do for them what Allen Iverson did for Reebok's basketball division in the 1990s.

"We wanted a voice to speak to consumers in the global marketplace," said Li Ning's Brand Initiative Director Brian Cupps, who is overseeing the shoot. "Evan is going to be the guy that helps us get a foothold in America."

Transition game: Turner learning about NBA life
Wednesday, November 17, 2010
By Todd Jones
THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

CLEVELAND - The basketball team that's paying him $3.8 million this season had barely settled into its swank downtown hotel Monday when Evan Turner's dinner appetite roared.

He could have settled in at the Ritz-Carlton's lobby restaurant and had the $32 veal tenderloin or gone out to any of the other fine dining establishments in northeast Ohio.

Turner, however, still carries himself in the mild manner he showed for three years at Ohio State even though he was the No.2 overall pick of the last NBA draft.

"I'm a picky eater," he said. "I don't do too much fancy stuff."

So the rookie guard - the latest touted savior of the beleaguered Philadelphia 76ers - headed 18 miles to Willoughby and took comfort in the booth of a familiar place: The Waffle House.

Turner savored the double-waffle, sausage, hash browns, and anonymity.

No one in the Waffle House recognized the 6-foot-7 player who swept the national college player of the year awards last spring as a junior at Ohio State.

"It's always nice to be left alone," Turner said.

Evan Turner enjoying his Ohio homecoming: Cavaliers Insider
Mary Schmitt Boyer, The Plain Dealer
Published: Tuesday, November 16, 2010

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- There's still a little Buckeye in Evan Turner.

"That means no class, right?" he said, laughing. "That's crazy."

Turner returned to The Q for the first time since he and the Buckeyes faced Cleveland State his freshman year, and he was happy to be back in Ohio.

"It's pretty cool," he said. "I'm definitely excited to be back in a familiar areas. I got to go to Waffle House last night. They don't have them in Philly."

Fueled by a double waffle, sausage and hash browns, Turner said he was adjusting to life in the pros.

"It has been all right," he said. "There's definitely ups and downs. I think I'm starting to get comfortable. You have to be mentally tough and bring it every single night. You're going against the best players in the world."

Philadelphia coach Doug Collins said he did not talk to Turner about returning to Ohio.

"I think sometimes the less I talk to Evan about that, the better," Collins said. "Evan is a deep thinker. I wish he had a little bit more selective amnesia. Sometimes he remembers too much. I remember the first time I talked to Thad Matta, he told me, 'Just remember, whatever you say to him he'll remember every word of it and he'll regurgitate it to you two years later.' I would expect Evan to be very excited tonight."
