Turner takes a shot against the Cleveland Cavaliers on Tuesday.

CLEVELAND, Ohio ? Following his first 10 games in the NBA, former Ohio State standout Evan Turner made his return to the Buckeye State on Tuesday. The Philadelphia rookie scored 16 points with nine rebounds in a 101-93 loss to the Cavaliers.

The former OSU guard, who was selected second in last season's NBA Draft, was the Big Ten's Player of the Year in 2010 and earned the Naismith Award, given to the nation's most valuable player in college basketball.

"It was cool to be back in Ohio," Turner said. "I have a lot of friends here. It would have been better if we would have won."

Turner, who led the Big Ten in scoring (20.4 ppg) and rebounding (9.2 rpg) while ranking second in assists (6 apg) and steals (1.7 spg), has admittedly been slow to transition to the NBA game thus far. The 6-5, 207 pound rookie is averaging 9.2 points, 6.3 rebounds and 1.9 assists on the season.

"I think I'm doing alright," Turner said. "I have my good days and my bad days. I've been trying to come to play and just compete and let the rest work itself out."

Turner's biggest challenge still remains in cutting down his turnovers, ranking 47th in the league with 24 on the season.

"This is basketball," Turner said. "I'm still trying to find my way and everything is still eye opening to me right now."

rookie Evan Turner had his second double-double with 11 points and a career-best 12 rebounds.

Sixers Notes: Film session for 76ers' Turner
76ers Notes

WASHINGTON, D.C. - About an hour before Tuesday night's game against the Washington Wizards, 76ers rookie Evan Turner was sitting in the second row of the Verizon Center stands.

Next to the guard sat assistant coach Quin Snyder, a laptop in his hands.

"We were just breaking down certain moves and different options I do," explained Turner, who took averages of 9.2 points and 6.4 rebounds into the game. "Bringing the ball up and coming off ball screens and reading things better - just keep putting it in my mind."

As Turner went through the clips - most of them snippets on the offensive end - it became clear that he's much more effective with the ball in his hands, coming off screens, and making plays with the ball.

"That's definitely way easier than standing around waiting for it," Turner said.

Is Evan Turner a potential star, a bust, or somewhere in between?

There is absolutely no reason for Turner to play less than 28 minutes a game. And there is no reason for him to play 22 minutes, which he did Friday night against Miami, attempting only two field goals and finishing without a point. Turner is one of many Sixers who are better with the ball, but he arguably is the only one who might win games if he had it. We know what Lou Williams can do with the ball, we know what Andre Iguodala can do with the ball, and we know what Thaddeus Young can do with the ball.

With Turner, we just don't know. So let Turner go 1 for 15 if he must, let him dribble and drive his way right out of the starting lineup and the league.

Get an answer on this kid. Otherwise it really will be a losing season.

NBA notebook: Turner's production slipping with Sixers
Tuesday, November 30, 2010
FROM WIRE REPORTS

In the past week, rookie guard and former Ohio State star Evan Turner has the same number of points as Philadelphia 76ers teammate Craig Brackins.

Turner and Brackins are the Sixers' only rookies, although expectations for Brackins aren't even in the same league as those for Turner, the No.2 overall pick in this year's draft.

In the past three games, Turner is 2 of 10 with six points and six rebounds in 62 minutes. In that same time, Brackins is 3 of 7 with six points and one rebound in 10 minutes.

Turner, though, will remain in the Sixers' starting lineup tonight against the Portland Trail Blazers. Brackins was assigned to the NBA Development League.

After showing bursts of the talent that made him the draft's second selection out, Turner has been almost nonexistent in the past handful of games. He has not finished a game with more than three rebounds since Nov.17.

"Evan's rebounding is down," coach Doug Collins said. "A big part of Evan's game is rebounding the ball, and then he has the ball to push it up the floor."

Collins also cited the return of swingman Andre Iguodala, who missed three games because of Achilles tendinitis, as a reason for Turner's struggles.

"Now all of a sudden with Dre back out there, it's getting reacclimated to running the lanes for layups," Collins said. "And Evan has always been a guy who has waited back for the ball, and got it, and been the one who has made the play."

Struggling rookie Turner could lose spot in Sixers' starting lineup

By BOB COONEY
Philadelphia Daily News
[email protected]
Evan Turner just turned 22 in October.
That thought probably enters the minds of coach Doug Collins, president Rod Thorn and general manager Ed Stefanski every day - probably more than once.
It hasn't been a rosy start for the second overall pick from the June draft. There have been some slivers of sunlight, but also some persistent dark clouds. Collins and the higher-ups certainly knew Turner's early days in the NBA would be turbulent, and maybe the rookie knew it, also. But never in his wildest dreams did Turner see himself going through the rugged stretch he is entrenched in right now.
Over the past four games, he has made only two of 14 shots from the field, and totaled seven points and eight rebounds. He has struggled mightily in the starting lineup since Andre Iguodala returned from an Achilles' tendon injury and soon might find himself among the reserves.

Turner may be out of starting lineup
By Kevin Tatum
Inquirer Staff Writer

Coach Doug Collins on Thursday appeared to be leaning toward replacing rookie Evan Turner in the 76ers' starting lineup for Friday night's game against the host Atlanta Hawks.

Turner, the second overall pick in the 2010 NBA draft, has opened at shooting guard in the team's last 12 games. That string started when swingman Andre Iguodala missed five games last month because of tendinitis in his right Achilles tendon. But since Iguodala's return, Turner has struggled.

"I've played around with it, and we practiced different lineups," Collins said after the team worked out at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. "We've given some thought to what we might do, but it's not etched in stone yet. If I make that move, it's not a demotion."

Turner, who as a star player at Ohio State controlled the ball for the Buckeyes, is finding that being part of a threesome with Iguodala and point guard Jrue Holiday limits his ability to do the things he is used to doing on the court. Collins pointed out that Turner's instincts have him going to the ball at times when he should be sprinting downcourt.

When Turner has played off the bench, he's been charged with handling the ball. As junior at Ohio State, he led the Big Ten Conference in scoring and rebounding, and was second in assists. As a senior, he was the consensus college player of the year.

"I'm trying to look for the best possibilities so he can play his best," Collins said. "He's more comfortable with the ball in his hands. That's what he's always done. You have to create some more habits, and that's what we're working on with him. I want to keep growing him as a player, so when I'm done here, Evan can look back and say that 'Coach helped me be better.' "

Evan Turner: The Forgotten
By Austin Burton

rsz_et-003.jpg

Evan Turner (photo. Li-Ning)

For an NCAA national Player of the Year and No. pick in the NBA Draft, Evan Turner has a curiously low profile and an even lower set of expectations. While most athletes in his position arrive in their city as ?The Savior? or ?The Franchise,? Turner ? averaging 7.2 points and 4.8 rebounds while shuttling in and out of the starting lineup ? is just another piece to the Philadelphia 76ers? puzzle. Meaning he has the basketball world right where he wants it.

*** *** ***

?How?s my piss??

As he asks the question, Evan Turner?s youthfully curious, caramel face doesn?t register a hint of comedic intent. He?s not trying to be funny, so when the dozen or so doctors, trainers, reporters and agents surrounding him at this pop-up Gatorade Sports Science Institute lab on Manhattan?s 53rd Ave. bust up laughing, it catches him by surprise.

But seriously ? he wants to know. Turner is here today taking a fitness test, for Gatorade?s database and his own, which included a pre-workout urine sample. Having been told the sample will determine if he?s properly hydrated, he intensely studies a sheet of cardio test results before popping his head up and asking the question that gets the room rolling.

Turner is serious because he understands that his body is his greatest asset. As the No. 2 overall pick in the 2010 NBA Draft, the Philadelphia 76ers guard is a businessman now in a lucrative, highly competitive industry. Turner, a Chicago native who turned 22 years old on the same day as the team?s regular-season opener, has accepted that the pro game isn?t just a game.

?The biggest difference between college and the pros is that you lose that innocence when you leave college,? says Turner, who as a junior at Ohio State cleaned up on national Player of the Year awards before turning pro. ?Everything is about money now. The NBA is a business, so a lot of things you do, it?s about making what you?re worth. You only get maybe 12 or 13 years out of this game, and you never know what you?re gonna do afterward. It?s about selling yourself. You are your own brand. You?re like a two-legged machine.?

What sold the Sixers was a 6-7, 210-pound machine that has just eight percent body fat. A machine that dropped 20.4 points, 9.2 rebounds, 6.0 assists and 1.7 steals last season, leading the Buckeyes to the Sweet Sixteen while playing up to four positions at one time or another. A machine that racked up triple-doubles against Alcorn State and Lipscomb, and came within three assists or one rebound of a triple-double five other times. A machine that ended archrival Michigan?s season with a buzzer-beating shot just inside half-court in the Big Ten tournament. A machine that broke a bone in his back on Dec. 5 against Eastern Michigan, and made it back on the court by Jan. 6 to face Indiana.

?He?s tough and athletic, but he?s also a smart basketball player,? says Chicago Bulls point guard Derrick Rose, who played against Turner in high school. ?He has a high basketball IQ, and that can take him a long way. As a rookie, if the other guys on his team make it as easy for him as possible to adjust to the NBA, he?ll make a lot of strides.?

Sixers rookie Evan Turner slowly adapting to NBA play
By Scott Gleeson, USA TODAY

By Tony Dejak, AP
Philadelphia 76ers guard Evan Turner is scoring 6.9 points in 25 minutes a game for the 76ers (8-15) after leading the Big Ten in scoring (averaging 20.4 points) in his junior season at Ohio State.

PHILADELPHIA ? Evan Turner is having a seesaw rookie season.

Turner, the second overall pick in the draft, became the Philadelphia 76ers' starting shooting guard about 10 days into the season. That lasted 12 games.

SIXERS BEAT HORNETS: Andre Iguodala, Lou Williams lead Philadelphia

"He's just learning how to be a pro in terms of what you have to do on a nightly basis so you're at your best," 76ers coach Doug Collins said.

Turner played a season-high 43 minutes in a Nov. 17 loss to the Toronto Raptors and a season-low six minutes in Thursday's loss to the Boston Celtics.

He bounced back with seven points, four rebounds, three assists and a steal in 21 minutes of the 76ers' 88-70 rout Sunday of the New Orleans Hornets.

"It's all about finding your spot," said Turner, 22. "I'm just trying to keep working hard until my name is called."

The early rookie talk has centered on the power of Los Angeles Clippers forward Blake Griffin, the surprising play of New York Knicks guard Landry Fields and the injury-marred start of Washington Wizards guard John Wall, the No. 1 pick.

Turner is averaging 6.9 points in 25 minutes a game for the 76ers (8-15) after leading the Big Ten in scoring (averaging 20.4 points) in his junior season at Ohio State.

Turner, after playing 30-plus games in college for three seasons, is entering the next phase of a rookie NBA season. "Sometimes, you're playing four games in five nights. It's a little tough to get used to," he said. "I've had to pick things up quicker."

Collins: I wanted Turner from the start
By: TOM MOORE
The Intelligencer

PHILADELPHIA - On draft night, 76ers coach Doug Collins insisted a rumor that he preferred power forward Derrick Favors over guard Evan Turner with the No. 2 pick was untrue.

"I don't know where that got started," said Collins at the time. "Don't let the facts get in the way of a good story. Absolutely, Eddie (Stefanski) and I wanted Evan Turner. I was an Evan Turner guy from Moment 1 (of Turner's Sixers' June 17 workout)."

The Sixers selected Turner, with Favors going No. 3 to the Nets.

Prior to Tuesday's road win over the Nets, a New Jersey reporter asked Collins how strongly the Sixers considered drafting Favors.

"I didn't get involved with that; that was front office," Collins said. "I just was an observer. We're happy to have Evan and Favors is going to be a terrific player. The executive decisions, I don't make those. I've got my hands full doing what I'm doing here."

Asked about the two responses before Wednesday's home date with the Clippers, Collins said that he didn't "want to get into it" because he figured it was a no-win situation.

"I don't usually dance, but I was tap-dancing last night," Collins said.

Turner went into the Clippers' game averaging 6.6 points, 4.6 rebounds, 24.5 minutes and shooting 41.2 percent from the field in 24 games, while Favors' numbers were 6.7 points, 5.6 rebounds, 19 minutes and 54.1 percent shooting.

Evan Turner Got DNP-CD'd Against the Lakers

This is infuriating. Against the defending champions, Doug Collins opted to keep rookie guard Evan Turner on his bench for 48 minutes. The second overall pick in the 2010 draft and most recent recipient of the NCAA Player of the Year award at Ohio State played as many minutes last night as I did. In eight games in December, Turner has gotten more than 20 minutes of PT just once, and under 10 three times.
