G/F Evan "The Villain" Turner (2010 Naismith Winner)

What is up with ESPN they seem to have no knowledge of this. Is watching UCONN beat up on another team really more important?

I was thinking the same thing, because none of the major sports websites such as ESPN, CBS, SI or even Yahoo! have anything on the award. Unless there was an embargo on the information, which there wasn't, it's kind of strange (because this is a major award).

Turner adds Naismith award

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

INDIANAPOLIS - Evan Turner made it no secret a year ago that not winning the Big Ten player of the year award bothered him.

Reordering his priorities changed everything.

"I kind of got what awards meant mixed up," he said. "I thought awards meant respect. I thought awards were things that made you happy.

"I started learning later that it's about having pride in what you do that makes you happy. As long as I can look in the mirror and say I tried my hardest and I gave it my all, that's all that matters. I just stopped caring about the (other) stuff and started going out and having fun and just enjoying myself."

Now there's hardly an award Turner hasn't won.

He became the first Ohio State basketball player to win the Naismith Trophy last night, given annually since 1969 by the Atlanta Tipoff Club to the player of the year in college basketball.

Turner received the award during the National Association of Basketball Coaches' awards show at which he also was honored as the NABC's Division I player of the year.

"For this to happen is a dream come true," Turner said. "I really worked hard for it. There are a lot of people who could've gotten the award, a lot of great players."

Before driving home to Columbus last night, Turner said that he plans to announce by next Monday whether he will return to Ohio State for his senior season or enter the NBA draft, in which he is projected as a top-three pick. Next Monday is the date by which he must withdraw from classes at Ohio State for the program to avoid a potential Academic Progress Rate penalty.

Turner said he discussed the issue with family members this weekend but has not decided what to do.

"Right now I'm just enjoying myself," he said. "When I figure something out, you will definitely know."

Not, by any means, knocking down the older players mentioned in the first quote, but ET is doing things those guys did not. I know nostalgia plays a part in comparing all-time players, and the lack of coverage back then, the interwebs, etc... but all of the stats listed were kept even back then, and they didn't do what ET has done through his junior season.

ET has been a joy to watch. Such a special player, congrats my man!!!!

It makes a difference when looking at total numbers instead of averages. Turner played in 101 games at tOSU, while Lucas only had 82. And the official site doesn't list assists and steals for players in the Lucas-Havlicek era, those started being tracked sometime in the '70s.

Scoring over 24 points a game, Lucas led the nation in shooting % all 3 years, led the nation in rebounding twice, and got tOSU to the title game all 3 years, winning it in 1960. He was National POY twice and Final Four MVP twice.

No knock on ET, who deserves his POY honors amd has earned a future retiring of his jersey at tOSU, but the best all-time tOSU basketball player is still clearly Jerry Lucas.

The announcement is supposed to be kept under wraps until halftime of the NC game when CBS "announces" the winner on TV. I guess they don't want to step on CBS' toes.

I agree. It doesn't detract in any way from Evan Turner's accomplishments to give Jerry Lucas his due as Ohio State's best ever player.

It also doesn't detract in any way from the accomplishments of the rest of the team to say that Lucas had a far better support network out there on the floor than Evan Turner. I don't think Evan Turner had a Hondo out there. Or a Mel Nowell for that matter.

All of that said, one must remember that Turner broke his back this year. Unbelievable that he came back and stunning that he accomplished what he did and took his team to the NCAA.

if Turner comes back (very doubtful), he may rival Lucas in the hearts and minds of Ohio State fans in generations to come. He will always be Ohio State's first Naismith Award winner.

Congratulations Evan Turner!

Very nice post, and nothing against Schwab who is a great poster and I think just got caught up in the great moment that was shared by all here with Evan being named the Naismith winner. You put the numbers out there, BB, and the numbers don't lie.

As a 47 year old lifelong Buckeye fan in all sports, there are 4 Great Truths in life.

1. Death
2. Taxes
3. There will NEVER be a greater football player at TOSU than Archie
4. There will Never be a greater Hoops player at TOSU than Lucas.

Of course, just my opinion.

Peace
