THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
EAST LANSING, Mich. - Justice would be served if Kentucky point guard John Wall was voted college basketball's player of the year. But there would be no injustice if Wall came in second.
Yesterday, Even Turner added another sterling line to his curriculum vitae. Before a hostile crowd - actually, hostile doesn't even begin to describe the atmosphere in the Breslin Center - and a national television audience, Turner propelled No.9 Ohio State to a 74-67 victory over No.11 Michigan State. The game had myriad ramifications, and Turner's second-half performance, under ridiculously harsh conditions, served as a ringing statement. Wall has nothing on him.
Both Ohio State and Michigan State are 21-7, 11-4 in the Big Ten. The Buckeyes kept themselves a half-game behind No.4 Purdue (23-3, 11-3) in the race for the conference title. They further polished their NCCA Tournament resume with another impressive road victory. And they removed some of the biliousness that was left after their three-point loss to Purdue in Value City Arena on Wednesday.
Turner was too congested to sleep Friday night. Coach Thad Matta got the news at sunrise Saturday. When Matta got to work, he found Turner asleep in the locker room. Matta asked Turner to smile through a walk-through.
The Buckeyes arrived here Saturday afternoon, and Turner slept in the bleachers as his teammates practiced. Yesterday morning, Turner filled his plate at breakfast but ate nothing. An unpleasant thought nagged Matta: He might have to go without the best player in the nation.
"If I stepped on the court, I wasn't sick," Turner said.
