G/F Evan "The Villain" Turner (2010 Naismith Winner)

What's amazing about Evan's performance today is that he has battled the flu this weekend. He didn't practice the last two days and had been throwing up a lot. The announcers kept harping on him for looking sluggish and the entire time, my buddy, who is a manager (didn't make the road trip), is flipping out because Evan played all 40 minutes and was getting IV's at halftime. Kid is a competitor.

Is Turner entering number retirement territory? Does he have to win player of the year?

Three men's basketball players have had their numbers retired by tOSU.
Jerry Lucas who was AP player of the year twice. The jerseys of Gary Bradds who earned the AP POY once, and Jim Jackson who never achieved that merit were retired in 2001.
So because of the Jackson precedent, it must not be necessary for Turner to win POY to be considered for jersey retirement.

OTOH since the only OSU players to receive AP POY awards were Bradds and Lucas, if Turner were to win POY and not have his jersey retired it would also be unprecedented.

Jimmy Jackson won UPI Player of the year in 1992.

Four. Havlicek.

Consider the bar. Lucas and Hondo, NC and final fours. Bradds once scored more than 40 points six games in a row. Look at Jackson's leadership on the Buckeyes performance in the NCAA. It's more than just POY. It's the body of work. We should discuss this after that body of work is complete.

They just showed ET in the crowd on the tOSU-Sparty Women's game at the Schott.

Nice to see him supporting the women, but he was late getting there. WTF, was he busy earlier today?

Ohio State To Retire Three Basketball Jersey Numbers - The Ohio State Buckeyes Official Athletics Site - OhioStateBuckeyes.com

Jan. 4, 2001
COLUMBUS, Ohio--Andy Geiger, Ohio State director of athletics, announced three Buckeye basketball greats will be honored by officially retiring the numbers they wore as Ohio State Buckeyes.
Gary Bradds (1962-64) and Jim Jackson (1990-92) and Katie Smith (1993-96) will be honored during the 2001 Big Ten Conference men's and women's basketball seasons. . . . Ohio State great Jerry Lucas' No. 11 is the only other basketball player to have a number retired. Smith is the first women's player have a number retired.

From the OSU official archives:

Havlicek’s No. 5 jersey was retired during the 2004-05 season (vs. Wisconsin, Feb. 27). He is one of four Ohio State men’s basketball players to have his number officially retired.

And Mr. Trivia is right on track:

Jackson also was a two-time All-American, and was selected by United Press International as the College Player of the Year as a junior
.

So Jackson was UPI POY, and had jersey retired, but Hondo was not POY.
To answer the original question, is it required to be POY to be have your jersey retired? Must not be.

Turner heals all
Ohio State star shakes off illness, seals big road win

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Hacking from chest congestion and listless from flu symptoms, Evan Turner had slept little the previous few nights. He said he hadn't practiced with a basketball in his hands in that long, either.

"I've been feeling like crap," he said.

Turner's Ohio State teammates were prepared to take up his considerable slack, William Buford said, in what was tantamount to a must-win game for the Buckeyes at Michigan State.

"But you know," Buford said, "Evan is one of the best players in the country. So even if he's sick, he can still do whatever he wants to do."

Michael Arace commentary: Turner's court resume stacks up against any

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Justice would be served if Kentucky point guard John Wall was voted college basketball's player of the year. But there would be no injustice if Wall came in second.

Yesterday, Even Turner added another sterling line to his curriculum vitae. Before a hostile crowd - actually, hostile doesn't even begin to describe the atmosphere in the Breslin Center - and a national television audience, Turner propelled No.9 Ohio State to a 74-67 victory over No.11 Michigan State. The game had myriad ramifications, and Turner's second-half performance, under ridiculously harsh conditions, served as a ringing statement. Wall has nothing on him.

Both Ohio State and Michigan State are 21-7, 11-4 in the Big Ten. The Buckeyes kept themselves a half-game behind No.4 Purdue (23-3, 11-3) in the race for the conference title. They further polished their NCCA Tournament resume with another impressive road victory. And they removed some of the biliousness that was left after their three-point loss to Purdue in Value City Arena on Wednesday.

Turner was too congested to sleep Friday night. Coach Thad Matta got the news at sunrise Saturday. When Matta got to work, he found Turner asleep in the locker room. Matta asked Turner to smile through a walk-through.

The Buckeyes arrived here Saturday afternoon, and Turner slept in the bleachers as his teammates practiced. Yesterday morning, Turner filled his plate at breakfast but ate nothing. An unpleasant thought nagged Matta: He might have to go without the best player in the nation.

"If I stepped on the court, I wasn't sick," Turner said.

NCAA Notebook: Second Pick a Lock?
By: Yannis Koutroupis Last Updated: 2/22/10

Turner Peaking: There's no debate regarding who the number one pick in the 2010 NBA Draft will be as Kentucky's John Wall has run away with the spot already. Number two may no longer be up for grabs either with the way Evan Turner of Ohio State is playing.

Steady improvements have been evident in Turner's game in each of his three years at Columbus. As a freshman he produced eight points, four rebounds, and two assists a game. Now he's the premier shooting guard in the country with the title of Mr. Versatility thanks to his averages of 19.5 points, 9.2 rebounds, and 5.8 assists a contest. He's also becoming the favorite for Player of the Year honors despite the fact that he a month with a lower back injury.

There are no concerns regarding his injury though since Turner has been carrying the Buckeyes since returning. He's averaging 35 minutes a night and has played six games in their entirety. He's got the Buckeyes in the mix for a Big 10 title at 11-4 in conference and 21-7 overall. They're likely to be anywhere from a 1-3 seed depending on how they finish the season.

Turner is blowing scouts and GMs away this season with his maturity. He's truly grown into a leader and nearly a complete player, with his only weaknesses being his 3-point shot and excessive turnovers. Turner's never been a big fan of the long ball, only shooting 126 in his career up to this point. This season he's hitting at a career-low rate of 25% and is giving it away 3.8 times nightly.

Those are the only two flaws that you'll find on the surging 6'7 shooting guard though. He's continuing to play at a very high level while other top prospects like Ed Davis, Derrick Favors, and Donatas Motiejunas has seen their stock fall just a tad.

The Minnesota Timberwolves are currently slated to have the second pick in this year's draft and Turner is an extremely logical candidate for them to select. His ability to do it all would be a natural fit in Kurt Rambis' version of the triangle offense. Add Turner into the mix with an already loaded young core with Al Jefferson, Kevin Love, Corey Brewer, Jonny Flynn and the rebuilding process speeds up significantly.

Congrats to Evan on this season's 6th Big Ten Player of the Week Award, and the 9th of his career.

Both are Big Ten records.

Announcers talking about other players as contenders for the Big Ten POY Award are making themselves look silly by acting like there's any doubt.

The junior guard connected on 17-of-38 (.447) shots from the field and went 14-of-20 (.700) from the foul line while adding three steals in 80 minutes of action. The weekend slate marked Turner's seventh and eighth contests against ranked opponents this season. The Buckeyes are 5-3 in those games with Turner averaging 23.5 points and 9.5 rebounds. Turner began the week by posting 29 points and seven rebounds against Purdue before following that performance with 20 points and 10 boards in a road win against the Spartans. The Chicago native now has 1,314 points and 602 rebounds in his career, ranked No. 23 and No. 17 on Ohio State's all-time scoring and rebounding lists, respectively. Sunday also marked Turner's 22nd career game with 20 or more points as well as his 23rd career double-double. Overall, Turner leads the conference in scoring (19.5 ppg.) and rebounding (9.3 rpg.) while also rating second in assists (5.77 apg.).

It was funny watching them even mention anyone else during the MSU game, talking about how Lucas and Moore and even Johnson and McCamey were in the discussion for POY. At one point I think they even threw Battle and Traevon Hughes's names out there. If Turner doesn't get every single vote, its a mockery and a travesty.
