When the news came that X-rays on Evan Turner's back were negative, the mood lightened in the postgame interview.
"Big relief," said Jon Diebler, who shares an off-campus apartment with Turner, Ohio State's leader in scoring, rebounding and assists.
Asked if it had dawned on him during yesterday's 111-60 victory over Eastern Michigan that David Lighty's season-ending foot injury occurred in the seventh game last season -- Turner was hurt in the eighth -- Diebler laughed and said, "I never thought of that."
"Knock on wood," he quickly added.
Too late.
A couple of hours after coach Thad Matta said he was "pretty optimistic" that Turner would be OK, the 15th-ranked Buckeyes' season was turned upside down again.
Further tests at OSU Medical Center revealed a transverse process fracture on Turner's second and third lumbar vertebrae. He is expected to miss eight weeks, Vince O'Brien, the team's athletic trainer, said in a statement issued by the athletic department.
Turner was released from the hospital in the afternoon and was at home last night, the statement said.
"My primary concern right now is Evan's long-term health and well-being," Matta said in the statement. "Evan was, to this point in the season, the best player in college basketball.
"We have been through tough situations before, and our guys will regroup and prepare for the rest of our season starting with Butler (on Saturday) in Indianapolis."
