Russell talks Ohio State commitment

Louisville native D?Angelo Russell didn?t anticipate making his college decision this soon. But when a kid feels comfortable with a school why prolong the recruiting process? On Friday Russell decided to end the recruiting process and committed to Ohio State. KentuckianaPreps.com writer Michael Johnston caught up with Russell Saturday night and spoke with him about his decision.

Russell played his freshman year at Louisville Central High School. For the last two season he has been playing for Montverde Academy in Florida. He visited Ohio State twice and by the time his second visit was over he knew he wanted to be a Buckeye.

?I thought I was going to wait until the last minute,? Russell said. ?God just led me in the right direction and that?s Ohio State. I?m comfortable with my decision. I feel like I had the best relationship with the coaching staff. I?ve been up there twice. The first time I went up there it was a rainy day, so I didn?t really get to see much but the second time I went I just knew it was the school for me. They have been recruiting me since my freshman year and I feel like they were recruiting me the hardest.?

Russell had a slew of scholarship offers, including offers from the 2012 NCAA Champion Kentucky Wildcats and the 2013 NCAA Champion Louisville Cardinals. Despite the local schools winning ways, Russell says that didn?t play a factor in him picking a school.

?Them winning didn?t play a factor in me picking that school,? Russell said. ?One of those schools is probably forcing their kids to leave and another school is probably keeping their kids there for four years, so I would have to sit out a couple years. I didn?t really have a final list. I kind of skipped the step of cutting my list. It was more of God leading me the right way.?

The 6-foot-4, 185 pound Russell is ranked as a consensus Top 25 player nationally. Scout has him ranked as the nation?s No. 11 prospect, while Rivals has him ranked No. 22.

Russell is certainly a rare treat for OSU basketball - to poach a hoops star from the state of Kentucky (especially with UK churning and burning top recruits every year) is certainly not going to happen very often. Derek Anderson is the last men's basketball player from KY that I can recall, and he didn't stay very long before going back. Matta has shown a propensity to take advantage of the location where OSU is with recruiting Chicago, even areas outside of Chicago in Illinois, Indiana and MI, and now KY (in addition to Ohio of course). PA surely should be next on the list (going to be hard to get anybody good from WV).

D'angelo Russell is a flat out bucket getter. Has impressed me at both the guard skills academy and here at LBJ
