D?Angelo Russell to Ohio State, Wants Okafor to Join Him
June 7th, 2013

Following his second visit to Ohio State on Monday, D?Angelo Russell had seen enough to pull the trigger.

?Just the environment pretty much turned me on,? the 6-foot-5, 185-pound shooting guard out of Montverde (FL) Academy told SNY.tv by phone. ?I have a really good relationship with the coaching staff and I really feel like this was the best opportunity to be the best that I could be, and I feel like today was a really good day to decide.?

The No. 22 prospect in the Class of 2014 per Rivals, Russell returned from his second visit to Ohio State Monday. He said he also strongly considered Michigan State.

?I didn?t go through the process of cutting my list, but I built a good relationship with them,? he said. ?Honestly, if anybody was closest to them it was probably Michigan State.?

A Louisville native, Russell helped Coach Kevin Boyle?s Montverde club win the ESPN NHSI in April, defeating Syracuse-bound Tyler Ennis and St. Benedict?s Prep, 67-65.

Asked what his role would be at Ohio State, Russell said head coach Thad Matta showed him how Mike Conley and Evan Turner played as Buckeyes.

?He just said he could see me being a playmaker and being able to do a lot,? Russell said.

Russell said his next order of business would be trying to convince Chicago big man Jahlil Okafor to join him.

?I?m most definitely trying to recruit Jahlil Okafor,? he said.

Asked if he had reached out to Okafor yet, he said, ?I?ve pretty much shut my phone down. I haven?t really paid attention to any of the social media or any of that.?

Okafor is on record saying he wants to play college ball with Minnesota point guard Tyus Jones, and many believe Duke is the favorite.

Still, Ohio State is in the mix for both, along with Kentucky, Kansas, Michigan State and Baylor.

Asked if he would work on Jones too, Russell said, ?Probably not Tyus, but definitely Jahlil.?

With his senior year ahead of him, Russell is glad the process is over with.

?Definitely, I feel like it helps me prepare for being there now,? he said. ?It?s setting up from now, trying to step on the court now and just prepare to be ready for it.?

Loved watching this kid play in the National High School Invitational earlier this year. On a Montverde Academy team filled with future D1 recruits, Russell really stood out. He's got great size, solid athleticism and an ability to attack the basket as well as shoot it efficiently from three. His ability to handle the ball doesn't hurt either. Plus, the defensive potential of a back-court with Russell and Scott has to have Thad salivating. Huge, huge get.

D'Angelo Russell commits to Ohio St.
Updated: June 7, 2013
By Paul Biancardi | ESPN RecruitingNation

D'Angelo Russell, No. 24 in the ESPN 60, committed to Ohio State on Friday night.

"I have been going through the recruiting process for a long time but never cut my list down. I know Ohio State is where I want to be, so I made my decision," he said.

"I evaluated their situation and felt it was best for me."

Russell, a 6-foot-4, 180-pound shooting guard out of Louisville Montverde Academy, chose the Buckeyes over Louisville, Michigan State and North Carolina.

The Buckeyes now have four commits for the Class of 2014, including three from the ESPN 60. Russell joins shooting guard Jae'Sean Tate and power forward Keita Bates-Diop. Ohio State also has a commit from three-star power forward David Bell.

"I decided to go to Ohio State because of the environment of the program, the coaching staff and the players I will be playing with such as Keita Bates-Diop," Russell said.

The Ohio State staff now can turn its attention to landing a much-needed big man, and the focus will be on the No. 1 player in the ESPN 60, Jahlil Okafor, a 6-10, 265-pound center out of Chicago Whitney Young High School. Russell plans on helping the Buckeyes get Okafor.

"I feel I can help the coaches landing a big man. I understand them and know how to play with them," he said. "I had success with [Kentucky signee] Dakari Johnson."

He reminds me of Jeremy Lamb in UCONN.
Not so explosive athleticism, but smooth dribble and shooting.
When we get Okafor, Look out...

You know, I hadn't thought about that before but there are some real similarities now that you bring it up.

Great job by Matta to keep the 2014 class rolling. Good to see D'Angelo wants to help recruit Okafor to OSU as Jahlil is the kingpin.

It will be interesting to see what position Russell plays primarily at OSU. Listed by many as an SG, but recruited to play at least some PG. Definitely has a strong shooting pedigree, very good 3-point shooter and FT shooter as well.

Russell's stats from EYBL so far this summer for Each 1 Teach 1 - not as good shooting the 3 as I expected (27%) but I think he will be a good 3-point shooter in college with practice:

03 RUSSELL,D'Angelo 13 GP - 10 GS / 334 MIN / 25.7 MPG / 62-155 FG / .400 FG% / 15-54 3FG / .278 3FG% / 34-41 FT / .829 FT% / 15 OR / 47 DR / 62 TR / 4.8 RPG / 24 PF / 1 DQ / 42 AST / 25 TO / 5 BLK / 19 STL / 173 PTS / 13.3 PPG

He has scored slightly more points than anyone else on that team, has the most rebounds, and is second in assists and steals behind Joel Berry (UNC PG commit).

Recruiting Insider | D'Angelo Russell chooses Ohio State basketball
Louisvillian rated top shooting guard

Louisville native D?Angelo Russell, a five-star shooting guard who attends Montverde Academy in Florida, committed to play basketball for Ohio State on Friday, giving the Buckeyes a signature recruit in the 2014 class.

Russell, a sweet-shooting left-hander, made the decision after visiting Ohio State on Monday, his second trip to the Columbus campus.

?I built a great relationship with the coaching staff,? Russell, who is back home in Louisville for the summer, said in a phone interview. ?Something that really caught my eye was the environment. It?s not too far from home and not too close to home.?

The 6-foot-4 Russell, who attended Central High School as a freshman before transferring to national powerhouse Montverde, chose the Buckeyes over a long list of major scholarship offers ? including Louisville, Indiana, Florida, North Carolina and Missouri. Kentucky had shown interest but hadn?t offered a scholarship.

Had Russell remained at Central he almost certainly would be a top player in the state right now, but his time at Montverde has helped him build national acclaim. He?s ranked as the nation?s No. 1 shooting guard and No. 11 prospect overall in the 2014 class by Scout.com. He?s No. 22 overall by Rivals.com and No. 24 by ESPN.com.

Russell said he was impressed with how OSU coach Thad Matta had personally taken a lead role in his recruitment.

?It?s one thing to know that an assistant coach wants you, and then it?s another thing to know that the head coach wants you just as bad,? he said. ?... He was telling me I would come in as a playmaker, that I have the tangibles Evan Turner had with being able to pass and being a big guard, being able to facilitate and get creative for his own shot.?

Russell is Ohio State?s fourth commitment in a strong 2014 class, joining five-star Illinois forward Keita Bates-Diop and Ohio prospects Jae?Sean Tate and David Bell. Russell said he will now try to recruit five-star Chicago center Jahlil Okafor, a top Ohio State target.
