G D'Angelo Russell (Unanimous 1st Team All-American, All-Star, Los Angeles Lakers)

When you talk about the top picks in the draft I think you have to consider which teams are going to be drafting at what position and if they are looking for Bigs or Smalls.. Russell would certainly fit in the latter category and I cannot think of a couple guys from one team that would fit in the first category.
Looking at the top 10, I count 8 teams where Russell would be a great fit and start immediately (Knicks, Sixers, Timberwolves, Lakers, Kings, Nuggets, Jazz, and Pacers).

He's one of the two best guards in the draft and plays a position (SG) that has a dearth of talent within the league right now. Oh, and he can play PG if need be. He's going top 5. Period.

I think his floor is Brandon Knight, his fairway is Manu (although that's a bit of a cop-out lefty comparison), and his ceiling is basically Steph.

...

Ellis Myles, Russell’s former AAU coach, is on the phone, and he’s trying to come up with a comparison for the freshman star. The names of Curry or Harden have not come up yet, but those are the first two suggestions he throws out.

He’s then told about the offensive rating stat that ties the three players together.

“I was just throwing those two guys out as a comparison,” Myles says, laughing. “Wow.”

He would win the Naismith in a landslide if he returned and probably guarantee the first overall pick for himself.

Probably too much luring him away this year for that to happen though. So many one and done's that this program has had over the past 10 years and no championships.

I don't know about the 1st overall pick, but he could be frontrunner for NPOY if he came back. I wouldn't rule out him coming back from the standpoint of he has yet to dominate in college basketball on a real consistent basis like we are used to seeing from star players at OSU, which is part of why I have doubts that he would be an NBA starter next year on the vast majority of teams, probably needs some more polish before he'd be good enough to earn that role IMO. It's real in the NBA, you don't get anything handed to you and everybody is eager to prove something against you if you're a top pick. A triple-double against Rutgers is great, but struggling in losses to MSU and UM isn't. I think he would benefit from another year in college but as you say there is a lot of incentive to leave college. OSU hasn't had that many 1 & dones, none since 2009.

His stats compared to Steph Curry are actually absurd when you factor in B1G play vs ............ well wherever the hell Davidson plays. I guess you could argue that when you are 1000% the best player on your team and by a landslide (Russell is clearly the best player, but him compared to our second best player probably doesn't even compare to Curry vs Davidson's second best player) that there is even more attention towards you. That and assists would come easier at OSU than it would at Davidson since there are other players who can score. Either way, being where he is is damn impressive.

He struggled from the field the last few games, and went 3-9, 0 assists and 3 TOs the first half against Purdue (total 20-59 from the field, barely over 33% from the field the last 4.5 games). In college. Does that scream "NBA star" to you? I'm sorry, I really hope he plays well, but I do not see a player who is playing at a level that I think "future NBA all-star" watching him.

You've made clear your disdain for D'Angelo. Now please let it drop.

This kid has NBA GAME.

Pure NBA game. He'll be a better player in the pros then he is in college. Yes, that good. Sick handles, smooth jumper, plays a step ahead of everyone else. The floor spacing in the NBA will be huge. I feel like he's even had to adjust his game down with the college game/teammates. He's going next level when he hits the league.

He'll make a killing at the FT line, shoot well from 3 and dish out assists. He will be a star.

I don't agree that a guy can be a better player in the NBA rather than the NCAA just because of the style of play. Russell may improve significantly in the future, and his best days playing basketball are ahead of him for sure, so he will play better in future years. But you don't get better just because of being rid of the physical play in the NCAA, because everything is harder at the NBA level. Not having to attend class or otherwise spend time getting an education gives you more time to work on your game, but there is not one thing on the court that makes playing in the NBA easier than college basketball. It's a more physical game, the players are all better, bigger, stronger, more athletic, more skilled. It's harder to earn minutes, it's harder to get touches. Russell is playing a game now where the offense is often designed to help him get open, he's not going to get that luxury at the NBA level.

Russell had a great second half vs. Purdue, hopefully he can keep it going.

I understand the NBA game is a bit more spread out due to the 3-point line being farther back. But the thing that gets overlooked in looking at that benefit is that the NBA 3-point line is (for the most part) 3 feet farther than it is in college, which makes it much harder shot to make.

Shit you're probably right. Hopefully he leaves to free up a roster spot. I suppose he could also be hitting a freshman wall considering its late in the season and he's averaging a staggering 33 minutes per game. Oh, and maybe next time you should wait to talk down a player until after the game and not halftime :mock:
