G D'Angelo Russell (Unanimous 1st Team All-American, All-Star, Los Angeles Lakers)

Maybe you guys will be right, I hope he gets there. But it is a harsh world in the NBA when the strategy of many teams to improve revolves around losing games to get a lot of draft picks with the expectation that eventually they will pick a star. A lot of pressure on those high picks, it's hard to find the type of player who can turn a losing team into a winning one at that level just by that one player being added to the team.

He's in that environment now..how many wins does this team have without him. If he turns pro he has more upside in the league than anyone else in Scarlet and Gray since Jim Jackson.

I think Redd, Conley and Sully are all better in their prime compared to where I believe D'Angelo will be.

But he hasn't left college yet. He could make some improvements in a second year, on his consistency and being able to handle the physicality of the game. Not to mention the team is not faring very well this year and if he came back he would surely be able to be a part of a better team.

I've seen elsewhere that it could potentially be the smart move financially speaking to return for one more year due to the current CBA and the renewal capturing the upcoming massive TV contract. Think of it like the opposite of the rookie payscale in the NFL. If a player came out in 2011 or whatever it was you could have made an obscene amount of money, but then in 2012 with the NFL CBA there was more structure. In the NBA there's already structure, but with the new TV contract the rookie payscale should dramatically increase. I've heard it will be the year after next year. The idea of it all makes sense, but really I'm relying on the internet being correct on when the CBA expires and the TV contract kicks in.

Edit: Having said that if he's top 3 or even 5, it's hard to turn down that guarantee. Even if you were to know for a fact that you keep your draft slot next year (by this I mean the next class isn't supposed to have 5 studs that will push him down) and will make more with the new CBA, the risk of injury would probably make me jump. Or take out a very large insurance policy.

Yeah, but the problem is he is not guaranteed to be top-3 or top-5. DraftExpress has already moved Russell down to 3 from 2, and honestly I believe 3 is too high. A lot of projections are made but at the end of the day teams still have to make the pick and we see all the time guys are not picked as high as where they are projected. Foreign players always seem to be underestimated in terms of how many will be drafted and how high they get picked. And of course guys sometimes slide after they enter the draft for whatever reason. Sullinger for example, a lot of people felt he would be picked higher than he was, the injury was blamed for him slipping but even with that some thought he would be several spots higher. Koufos as well there were analysts who thought he would be picked in the lottery but both he and Sully slid into the 20's.

I saw that JaQuan Lyle (longtime friend of D'Angelo) posted today is D'Angelo's birthday, and alluded to the possibility that he would be back next year.

Edit: should have read the thread first! :biggrin2:

I'd be pretty shocked if he's not a top-5 pick outside of something medically coming out from the draft process.

When you talk about the top picks in the draft I think you have to consider which teams are going to be drafting at what position and if they are looking for Bigs or Smalls.. Russell would certainly fit in the latter category and I cannot think of a couple guys from one team that would fit in the first category.

I know a lot of draft stock is made up of potential and how a guy's game translates to the next level, but I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around how Sully wasn't picked until the 20s and Russell is supposed to be picked over 15 spots higher. I suppose you could say Sully was undervalued in his draft due to his "injury" and "negative" traits from a potential and athletic standpoint, but he was a sure thing who was dominant and yet he dropped several spots below where he should've went. I would not be shocked obviously if Russell was not picked in the top-5, and as often as guys slip in the draft for whatever reason, him not being in the top-10, while I would expect him to be in that top-10, it would not be a huge surprise to me.

Russell and Sully aren't great comparisons in terms of the draft partly because of what you pointed out (the pre-draft injury ID cost him, wouldn't surprise me if it was 5-10 spots lost). But also because Sully was a center who would be undersized in the NBA, or not athletic enough for being a PF. Russell is a SG/PG who wouldn't surprise me if he can be a PG in the NBA in which case he will be big for a PG, and while he's not a freak athlete, he's more athletic for a guard than Sully was for a big man. I mean could he slide out of the top 5? Maybe. But sure wouldn't be even near the slide Sully had from fan expectations. Maybe he'd slide to the 6-8 range at absolute worst. I still think he's top 4.
