FS Bo 'Beaux' Pelini (DC LSU Tigers)

Well stated. I'm not ready to run him out by any means, definitely give him time, and he certainly has the pedigree. I just don't think he's deserving of praise yet either, that was my main thing.

How long does one have to spend in the SEC before they can bring the southern speed advantage with them?

One day.

I'll give him praise on Cody Green alone and wait to see how this recruiting shapes up.

fair enough. Plus they're will be plenty of folks to potentially raid from UM's class once the season hits. Bryce McNeal may be a little out of Nebraska's league, but with Green you never know.

Well Jwins it doesn't take a mastermind to go to football combines and talk to assistant coaches and find out what they think and then pass it off as youR evaluation...yep thats what they do...especially luggendouche and Lemming. Duane Long maybe the worst evaluator in the world.

I could care less what they are ranked... do you place alot of faith in these rankings. Most of which that are BS AND BASED ON MEASURABLES.

It doesn't take a genius to watch the Army AA game and see players like Adrian Petersen, Ted Ginn, and Chris Wells tear it up and then rank them high...a 5 year old can do that.

I'll let you in on a little secret nuckleheads like the Husker don't understand. Guys like Pelini and Tressel have coached an NC teams and know their stuff!!! If Tressel offers a kid I don't question it...some idiot fans do but I don't. Pelini knows his stuff!!! They will get some wrong but most of the time Tressel is spot on. I sit back and enjoy the ride.

Dantonio didn't lose a game by more than 7 points last year. When the JL Smith thugs are weeded out MSU will be a team to reckon with. Look at this years recruiting and MSU...Dantonio will have them rolling...back to Pelini and Nebraska.

JWins no offense but the talent Dantonio brought in was Mediocre...according to who? you...cmon man. I'll take Dantonio's eval over your any day of the week and Pelini's over the Husker fan as well.

Minnesota used to be in Nebraska's wheel house. They snatched 5 star Lydon Murtha out of there. I'm not sure what you could call the Kansas, Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, Dakotas area but they used to own it. Back in the day they would have gotten Arthur and Bryce Brown.

I'd like to add that Dantonio did pretty good with Cincinnati's defense with a bunch of two-three-one star recruits. Brian Kelley is very apprciative. If he can have a defense that good at Cincy imagine MSU...Back to Pelini...sorry about the tangent

Ratings are all we have at this point. Ratings are also largely based on competition and tape. Do you expect JWins to do personally evaluate all of these recruits? He's saying the class is mediocre, it's not like he's saying it's awful and Pelini is a complete idiot. At this point, it does look mediocre, aside from a QB. I'm sure Pelini would be very happy if he could pull in higher-rated recruits. I agree that Tressel and Pelini are both solid (at worst, I don't know much about Pelini's coaching style, admittedly) coaches, but Tressel does pull in a large amount of highly-rated recruits. Pelini hasn't so far.

Someone can be a good talent-evaluator and still have bad recruiting classes. What makes someone a good coach is getting the most out of what you have. It's usually easier when you have a kid with more potential (usually goes along with a higher rating).

All I will say is this...I don't know more about football than Jim Tressel, Bo Pelini, or Mark Dantonio. IMO the recruiting services don't know as much as those coaches. Maybe some people on this board or on the recruiting boards think they do...I highly doubt it though. I sit back and enjoy watching Tresel reel in the talent...period. If I was MSU,OSU, or Nebraska fan I would sit back and watch. IMO good things are coming for all three programs.

I think these guys with Michigan State made a good point. If I was a Nebraska fan I'd love to see a top 5 class but at this point just building up a solid team a la Kansas/Missouri/West Virginia with 2/3 stars is the foundation to taking Nebraska back to the Tom Osborne days.

While I agree that its not an overnight type of deal with Nebraska and Pelini...I think he will get that back up to being BCS Bowl competetive in the next 5 years sure. But, as Jwins stated thus far its been "mediocre" on the recruiting front. I think perhaps like with all things rabid clueless fans expected that overnight turnaround and get right back to the glory days of Husker football. Unfortunately that would be nearly impossible for any coach given the circumstances many of you have already pointed out(location for example).

To brutus2002 however, relax dude. No one here is hanging Pelini on a cross or anything. Get off the ballsacks already.

Whats his record coaching Nebraska?....thats right undfeated!!!

He's 1-0, the only undefeated coach they've had since the guy that left in 1892!

(2003 bowl game, for those that don't recall)

I would be fine with 3 stars given the situation and one five star QB. As I'm sure we well know with guys like AJ Hawk, Anderson Russell, Kirk Barton etc the star system isn't the be all and end all.

Amen! If it were, how would you explain all the mediocrity and strategic advantage coming out of South Bend for the last 10 years? Every year the story goes that the Irish have put together one of the nation's best recruiting classes and yet...

So who were the players that weren't mediocre? Don't give me cliches, give me analysis. Fred Smith was an excellent steal from TSUN, and Adams will make waves, but overall the class was pretty weak.

I expected Dantonio to swoop in and get some of the 2nd/3rd tier leftovers in Ohio. Guys like Staples and others. Outside of Adams, he came up empty.

Contrast that with this year, where he's doing a fine job getting those kids (Klatt, White, Caper) in addition to the superstars (which are a tough sell at MSU).
I'll take Dantonio's eval over your any day of the week and Pelini's over the Husker fan as well.
So basically you're not going to give me any eval of your own. Splendid.

Good point. They actually had a stud QB committed, Blaine Gabbert, and some weapons for him until their implosion last season. He was from Missouri (IIRC), and a kid I wanted OSU to keep on the backburner if possible.

I've made the thread title more generic, to cover all football topics at Nebraska under Pelini. Osborne weighs in on things in this article.

si.com

Osborne outlines modest expecations for Pelini, Huskers

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) -- For a man who coached some of the most dominant teams in college football history, Tom Osborne has modest expectations for the 2008 Nebraska Cornhuskers.

First-year coach Bo Pelini simply needs to get the program on solid ground, Nebraska's athletic director said Friday.

"I guess what I'm hoping for is that we see a team that is well-organized, plays with a lot of heart, gives great effort and is well-prepared," Osborne told The Associated Press. "After that, you have to live with the consequences."

The Huskers are coming off a 5-7 season under Bill Callahan, who was fired after his second losing campaign in his four years at Nebraska.

Beyond the record, Osborne saw a program in disarray when he returned as athletic director in October. The Huskers had one of the worst defenses in the country, giving up 38 points a game and enduring beatings of 41-6 at Missouri, 76-39 at Kansas and 65-51 at Colorado.

Osborne said the best he can hope for is an immediate change in direction. The Huskers start preseason practice Aug. 4 and open Aug. 30 against Western Michigan.

Cont'd ...
