KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- After struggling through a miserable season, Nebraska needed an shot of confidence.

Enter new coach Bo Pelini, who has pumped the Cornhuskers with inspirational leadership that has made the players excited about his rebuilding project after the disappointment of last season's 5-7 record.

"The game is fun again," Nebraska offensive lineman Matt Slauson said. "We're playing for a coach we can really relate to. Coach Bo is a real fun guy to play for. He's a player's coach. He's a guy you want to work hard for because he's working as hard as we are."

Folks are not happy with the effort thus far.

This was the one reason LSU fans thought he may turn down the Nebraska job. Word has always been that he's not real big on recruiting. That he doesn't really care for public speaking and other demands recruiting places on the head coach of a big time program.

Based on what? ALL of them are 3-stars (or less) on both scout and rivals.

They got a 5 star qb out of Texas. Filled out the rest of the class with 3 stars except for one on scout.

Missouri, KState and Kansas aren't exactly blowing them out of the water. Considering the Callahan era decline and the fact they don't have a big crop of instate talent I think this a decent class. The Nebraska name isn't opening the doors it used to Florida, Jersey, Texas, etc.

Which wasn't part of the question, or the quote it was responding to

exactly. how are you using that to defend him? That's the kind of talent that will toil in mediocrity (assuming the rankings are not all off base).

Those three are not measuring sticks for Nebraska, no matter how far they've fallen.

Just like Michigan will never measure itself against Sparty, Iowa & Purdue even if RR toils in mediocrity for 5 years.

Then you open your own doors, or hire someone who can.

I would be fine with 3 stars given the situation and one five star QB. As I'm sure we well know with guys like AJ Hawk, Anderson Russell, Kirk Barton etc the star system isn't the be all and end all. Husker fan can back me up on this but when Nebraska was what we remember it they got guys like Tommie Frazier from Florida and Turner Gill from Texas. Michigan which I would argue is a bigger name nationally than Nebraska even if they went south for five years has some advantages over Nebraska. Michigan is close to a lot of Midwestern talent. Nebraska is in the middle of an area that doesn't produce a lot of talent. Nebraska falls further faster than many places because they're an outpost for Recruits today that have no memory of the Tommie Frazier era. In Nebraska's glory days that got top kids of out Jersey, Florida, Texas etc that were 1,000 of miles away. When you have a first year head coach at a school that's a 1,000 miles away from home that sell gets a let tougher. Pellini has no track record, Nebraska doesn't have much of a track record of putting people in the NFL recently and has little success as of late.

I don't think anyone Nebraska could have realistically hired would be off to a better start.

Kansas, Utah and Boise State have won as many BCS games as Nebraska this decade. The paradigm has changed.

Whats his record coaching Nebraska?....thats right undfeated!!! That guy will outcoach Callahan blindfolded. The guy can coach and if I'm not mistaken stars from scout and rivals don't mean shit. These analyst on these recruiting sites know jack shit about anything...Lemming...luggindouche...Jardy...Duane...Rivals is maybe the worst of all.

I don't give a damn what the analyst say Pelini can evaluate defensive talent. I liken him to Dantonio at MSU. Both are defensive masterminds that can evaluate talent on that side of the ball.

If you looking for recruiting NC at Nebraska you'll be waiting for a long time. Osbourne never had top 5 classes. He converted FB's and TE's into OL. The studs he recruited as far a rankings are concerned were on nthe defensive side of the ball.

So which guys do you feel are poorly ranked? All of them?

Or another way of asking, which guys do you feel are impact players in that list?

That's not an accomplishment.

Both still have to prove they can bring in impact talent. Dantonio had a woeful first year in recruiting, and this year capitalized primarily on the coaching transition. Both have tough sells, but that's why the positions opened up.

Dantonio may have a great eye for talent and the ability to develop it, but the kids he brought in his first year were pretty mediocre.

After reading Meat Market, and having heard many tales of his recruiting prowess, I'd be curious to see where they'd be with Coach O.

Read and loved Meat Market. I'd like to see the same. Coach did a good job recruiting for Ole Miss and probably had as much energy and passion as anyone in the college game. Maybe if he had a Nebraska he could get McKnight. The fact that he was so close was impressive to me.

Some further thoughts on Nebraska. Historically not on par but Nebraska got guys like DeAngelo Evans and Will Shields from Kansas, Grant Winstrom from Missouri and Roger Craig from Iowa. With Kansas State until recently, Missouri and Iowa being stronger how many of those guys have they lost? I think Nebraska is in tough position trying to get kids from far away when with CFB's parity since a Rutgers in NJ, etc can be just as attractive today.

Callahan got the Purify, Lucky caliber of high star recruit and didn't take them anywhere. Pellini got the QB in Cody Green. Now if he's recruiting at a low level 3 or 4 years in his regime I'd give him some flack. Miami and Florida State got some great recruiting classes that were worthless ie the Xavier Lee, Kyle Wright and people in the where are the now recruiting thread. If we went by stars Texas would have more BCS bowls than they actually have.

Callahan on paper could have been considered a good recruiter but he didn't deliver much in the way of results. If I were a Nebraska fan I'd be happy to have a guy that can the defense squared away and build from there. Nebraska isn't going back to 1995 over night. Nebraska is just another name to the five star DB in New Jersey. Pellini slowly but surely builds the pieces and I'd be happy.
