Fraternity Members?(Merged)

I was part of the Lamda Lamda Lamda fraternity.

Here is a picture of me moving into my dorm.

Out of morbid curiosity, any other Fraternity men out there? If so which fraternity and what campus are you at/did you graduate from?

I'm currently enrolled at tOSU and am a member of the Omicron Deuteron chapter of Phi Gamma Delta (FIJI) established at tOSU in 1878. Any other Phi Gams out there?

We actually have some Buckeye Football history. Some of our more famous football players include Chick Harley and [size=-1]Tom Matte and Phi Gams were actually instrumental in changing Ohio State's colors from orange and black to Scarlet and Gray.

I'm a Phi Gam. But one thing I don't quite get, why would a FIJI switch the colors to scarlet versus purple?

PERGE! :wink2:

edit: I shouldn't judge all frat members based on one large fued I had with one in college....

I dated this one frat guy's girlfriend (it was agreed they weren't exclusive) and out of jealousy he called my coach and said I had missed curfew....fortunately it was a night where a bunch of us were watching a game (red sox-mets w.s.) and I could prove where i was.....

Ever since I have had an edge about this subject...

If I had a dollar for every girlfriend/fiance that took a one night excursion for a jock an forgot about her frat guy for that night.....i'd be rich...

Unless you had to give a dollar back when the girl flipped to the fraternity guy...which happened....trust me...

I just don't get the entire "Frat vs. non-frat" thing. I didn't even get it when I was in college. I had tons of friends outside of the FIJI house - some were in other fraternities, and some weren't. What's the big deal?

Alan, I'm not talking about the girlfriends flipping BACK. The "jocks" (strange name for a non-fraternity member, but that's a different topic) had girlfriends too, you know.

Uhhh, no. And I don't get the joke either. If you're suggesting that FIJI parties are sausage parties, you can do better.
Jack Nicklaus was a FIJI, so was Bobby Rahal. Oh yeah, a ton of ex-OSU football players were frat boys too. Matter of fact, a lot of successful people were greek, God where do I even begin??????

It's kind of like class envy if you ask me. I was older so I needed to hang with some successful kids. I didn't want to live with kids I met in the dorm my first year of school (2 out of four of them went home and never finished school).

All the kids I hung with are doing well. All of them. At every roundup I go to, I am amazed at how the kids/alumni have done. I was seriously impressed at our last golf outing. All the graduating kids had jobs (that I met) and were all solid from a people skills/savvy standpoint.

Like it or not, the frats generally do a good job of breeding success. Kind of like the 'good' school districts.

I know between 30 and 40 frat guys and about 2 stray from the "norm". Everyone has their good qualities and bad qualities, but if I had to go on a Spring Break (gay) and you told me I had to go to this place with 10 random guys...regular guys or 10 frat boys, I'll take the 10 regular guys anytime. I think anyone on here can make sense of this concept. Basically, a reflection of the standard frat boy.

The "class envy" comment by ekeen is about the most ridiculous thing I've read on this board in a long time. Perhaps ever.

Sure frat boys might perform well in school, but I haven't seen much separation between their academics and my other guy friends. To be honest, I'd say that my other guy friends are probably a tad smarter on average. I don't have comparative GPAs for anyone, but the great majority of my truly bright friends were not in fraternities. Perhaps an unfair statement considering that I wouldn't consider any of the 30-40 guys I know in frats as friends. The whole "Greek Life" thing cracks me up.

I could rip fraternities for 10 years straight, but I'll leave this argument at the fact that when I really sit down and think about "Rush", I see a bunch of boys saying, "Hey, you want to be part of our club"? There are better ways to build resumes and prosper in the career world. So my question then becomes...are you kidding me?

If you need a frat for socials/mixers or to meet girls, then that sucks for you.

Exhawg has said it well, and 27...I couldn't agree more.

What I don't get is the "hatred" is always from the non-greeks. Why don't you get over it already? I never said Greeks (or FIJI's) are better than anyone else, and I honestly don't think it either.

Why is it that you feel like "ripping on fraternities for 10 years straight", Conerback??? Why do you look at it like a us vs. them issue? I obviously had a much different experience in school than you did, because it would never have dawned on me to react this way.

Did a bunch of Delts kick your ass and take your lunch money?

Did you pledge Sigma Chi and get booted because you drink wine coolers instead of beer (NDC???)?

It always cracks me up when someone thinks it's cool to rip on fraternities. Does it make you feel like a bigger man? Does it help fill some hole in your fragile ego that was created from being a "dormie"?

No one is (I should say "was") giving you a hard time, so why don't you give it up.

Perhaps you didn't hear his explanation of the "pissy private" in the Marines. Ekeen is the captain of Ekeen's world, as long as he says things that back up his actions....he's happy.

Just some interesting facts about Ohio State Greek life.

The all greek gpa is considerably higher than the all campus GPA. Our chapter was only second out of fraternities, yet our cumulative last quarter rose to a 3.35. Most of the fraternities and sororities Ohio State are considered a 'who's who' of campus. For example, members of our chapter this past year have been involved in:

2004 Homecoming King
SPHINX Senior Class Honorary
Chimes Junior Class Honorary
Mirrors Sophomore Class Honorary
Student Coordinator for University Orientation
All-American varsity fencer
Ohio State Wrestling Club
Edwin S. "Beanie" Drake Scholarship Recipient
Ohio State University Marching Band (2004 'I' Dotter at Michigan State and Michigan Games)
Undergraduate Student Government - Director of Government Relations, Off Campus Senator, and committee members of the Undergraduate Student Government
Electoral Governance Board
Order of Omega - Greek Honorary
Fisher College of Business Honors Contract
Alpha Epsilon Delta - Pre Med Honorary
Phi Alpha Delta - Pre Law Fraternity
2003 - 2004 Outstanding Freshman
Student Campaign Advisory Board
Chapter Presidents Leadership Initiative
Buckeye Greek Leadership Initiative
Intramural Sports
Varsity Sport Members
Club Sport Members
Water Polo
Fencing
Wrestling
Softball
Basketball
Volleyball
Football
Interfraternity Council
Alternative Spring Break Leaders
Real Life
Buckeyes 4 Christ
Ohio Union Activities Board
Student-Alumni Council (Three Executive Board members, two Directors, and a Program Coordinator of the Student-Alumni Council)
Honors Ambassadors
High school football and baseball coaches
BuckeyeThon
Relay for Life
Welcome Week Committee
Beat Michigan Week Committee
Race for the Cure
Community Commitment
Rock the Block
Chairman of the Maximus Scholarship Competition
President, Treasurer, and Public Relations Chair for Block 'O', the university's student section
Two 2004 Outstanding Seniors recognized by the university
College Republicans
College Democrats
Physics club
Math club
2004 Outstanding First Year Award
2004 Outstanding New Member Award

And this list is being built even larger as brothers involve themselves in even more activities this year.

Back to the facts...

Greek alumni are the largest contributers to the Univerisites that we love. Just ask the University Alumni Councils.

At OSU, greek students comprise 2% of the student body, yet we acount for slightly more than 95% of the community service and philanthropy on campus.

At any rate, the bad publicity from some of the frats does tend to overshadow the good of the fraternities. Unfortunately thats the way the world works.. Look at the current OSU media situation....

"I got my education at Ohio State but it was through Phi Gamma Delta that I really learned how to be a friend and appreciate people from all walks of life" - Jack Nicklaus - Phi Gamma Delta - OSU '61
