Former DC Kerry Coombs (Former Cincy Bearcats Interim Head Coach)

“Obviously, we didn’t play our best game,” Coombs said. “And it’s up to us to learn from it, to let it drive us and motivate us and for us to go to work tomorrow morning and every day on making sure that doesn’t happen again.”

“Matt Barnes is a really, really bright coach,” Coombs said. “I’ve been working with him in the secondary for the entire season. I love Parker. Parker was one of my intern guys back when I was special teams coordinator the first go-around, and I think he’s a really sharp young coach. And I love the fact that our head coach believes in hiring and promoting from within. I think that’s the way things should be done. If you know people and you’ve seen them and you appreciate the quality of their work, you allow them to continue to move up the ladder.

“And I’m not evaporating from the secondary. I’m gonna be around an awful lot with those kids and those kids that I’ve recruited and those kids that I’ve coached. It’s still gonna be an area of expertise. But it’s also gonna give us a great opportunity to move around and be involved with the other position groups and really focus on team defense and complementary defense and making sure that all of us are working hand in hand to produce the best result, which is to be the best in the country.”

And thankfully, Ohio State's got that part down, finishing with three of the top-10 recruiters in the nation.

And this doesn't include the guy that's currently favored to land two five-star, top-five players in the country.

Yes, Larry Johnson is somehow all the way down at No. 24. But it's tough to imagine he'd stay there if Ohio State lands J.T. Tuimoloau.

I prefer one DC. Only one cook in the kitchen.

Let’s see what ya got coach. We know you will bring the juice, can you also bring the schemes?

Will see.

It's been kinda a theme since Urban. With Fickel and Withers we made wholesale changes every week. Players were lost, and Clemson killed our d because it was so vanilla, we didn't have an adjustment for the bubble screen.

When Ash came in for 2014, Fickel committed to running his Cover 4, Fickel just added some zone blitz stuff. The players didn't have to learn new roles constantly, improved week to week, and we're pretty damn good by the playoffs.

I have not compiled careful and thorough data, but I am tempted to believe that much of the success that Chris Ash and Jeff Hafley had were because of the recruiting results of Kerry Coombs.

Building on this, it may take a few years for Coombs to return to full recruiting momentum where top rank CBs come to Ohio State just because other top ranked DBs are already on the team, but I predict steady defensive improvement each year, much of it coming from Coombs recruiting.

Oh most definitely Ash and Hafley owe their careers after OSU to what Coombs did in recruiting. The OSU 2019 class that Hafley was a part of only had 2 DBs, with one now getting PT and another who has been a career special teamer, no CBs in that class. Scheme worked great for both coaches, with a number of great players who came to OSU partially because of Coombs.

And he has already gotten top recruits after only 1 year of a return. His first year back and he's in the NC, in an unfamiliar Scheme with no off season. That's some pretty damn good coaching
