Former DC Kerry Coombs (Former Cincy Bearcats Interim Head Coach)

Same problem carried over from last year.

Wanted to believe it was bc of Covid and a lack of time to develop schemes, but to be brutally honest, I just don’t think he is a very good coordinator. Great guy, good DB coach, great recruiter……poor X’s and O’s guy when running the defense.

The lack of any zone defense is astonishing. It takes me right back to Urban Meyer years where he hated zone bc he saw it as weakness. Our man will beat your man.

Im a broken record on this, but when you mix in coverages (man and zone) and force QB’s to process information post snap, you help the defense SOOO much. The argument seems to be, the guys are young so they need to learn the base defense first, before mixing in more exotic coverages. But staying in base, and running man entire game, is just so easy to gameplan against this day and age. Unfortunately, our defense has become a massive liability.

Single high safety is great with veterans that make no mistakes. Not so much while breaking in youngsters.

Something more like Ash's bend don't break cover 4 would be the way to go for now.
Zone up underneath that and dont give up wide open plays. Should be a possibility especially when we probably dont have the LBs to play downhill or cover.

They did run zone just a bit and got shredded, likely because they couldn’t generate pressure with the front 7.

This. All of this.

And it sucks, because I love me some Kerry Coombs; but the man is a terrible DC.
