Former Alabama Head Coach Mike Shula (official thread)

Makes sense now. Here is one Mountaineers take:

Look at all the media he is bringing to himself and WVU, with a huge recruiting weekend coming, what better to tell new recruits, you should play for me look at the schools that want me to coach them

Reports: Rodriguez considering offer from Bama

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=2690016

However, West Virginia tailback Steve Slaton, who is in Orlando to attend Thursday night's Home Depot College Football Awards Show at Walt Disney World Resort, told ESPN.com's Mark Schlabach that Rodriguez told his team he's not going anywhere.
I wonder if it's gonna come down like a few years ago. I forget which team but they found out their coach was leaving via cell phones while on the side lines.

That was John L Smith ditching Louisville to go to Michigan State.

Rich Rodriguez will be named the new head football coach at the University of Alabama in a Friday press conference. The West Virginia coach will take over the Crimson Tide program vacated by Mike Shula, who was fired two weeks ago.
Rodriguez and his wife, Rita, met with Alabama athletic director Mal Moore in New York City earlier in the week, and according to sources at both West Virginia and Alabama, Moore called Rodriguez Wednesday night with an official offer.
Rodriguez is in Jacksonville on Thursday and is scheduled to fly via private plane to Tuscaloosa early Friday morning for a press conference later in the day.
The terms of Rodriguez's contract with Alabama is not known at this time, other than Alabama has agreed to pay the $2 million buyout in his West Virginia contract.
According to one West Virginia assistant coach, Rodriguez will like to coach the Mountaineers in their upcoming Gator Bowl game before taking over in Tuscaloosa, but no official agreement has been reached yet.

You gotta check out the WVU boards. They are trashing RR and saying he has accomplished nothing, even at WVU - essentially saying that their own program sucks. Couldn't agree more.

Nothing like unrequited love.

COLLEGE NEWSWATCH
'Bama coach hunt may soon be over

Friday, December 08, 2006 From staff and wire reports
Alabama's search for a new coach appears to be picking up speed.
Miami Dolphins coach Nick Saban said Thursday he declined to meet with Alabama officials about their coaching vacancy, while media reports had West Virginia coach Rich Rodriguez being offered the job.
"I'm flattered that they may have been interested in me, but it never really progressed, because we just never let it progress," Saban said after practice in Davie, Fla.
The Press-Register of Mobile, citing unnamed sources, first reported the offer to Rodriguez from Crimson Tide Athletic Director Mal Moore on its Web site, and said the coach was considering the offer.
The Tuscaloosa News also reported on its Web site that Alabama offered Rodriguez the job.
Rodriguez and his wife, Rita, met with Moore Tuesday night in New York City before the College Football Hall of Fame induction banquet.
Rodriguez has built West Virginia into a Big East power, winning the Sugar Bowl after the 2005 season and a share of three straight league titles. The Mountaineers are 10-2 and play in the Gator Bowl against Georgia Tech on Jan. 1.
Canes reportedly make hire:
Longtime Miami defensive coordinator Randy Shannon will replace the fired Larry Coker as coach of the Hurricanes, the Miami Herald reported on its Web site Thursday.
The newspaper, citing an unidentified source, said Shannon accepted the job Thursday and that his hiring would be officially announced by the university today.

Hey! Coach R-Rod, I'd suggest you first go buy a tweed jacket, polyester slacks and houndstooth cap, then start figuring out a way to turn those bums into a perennial 11-1 team that runs circles around Auburn en route to winning the SEC West every single year.

Barring that, rent.

Plenty of conflicting reports flying around right now...he may accept/sign but this may also be a huge powerplay to get the facilities for which he has been asking. Suddenly, WVU and its alumni base have found the funds to upgrade...

Stay tuned....supposedly :)
