After repeated denials, Saban takes Bama job

Nick Saban has accepted an offer from Alabama to coach the Crimson Tide and left the Miami Dolphins on Wednesday, two weeks after declaring "I'm not going to be the Alabama coach."

Saban told team owner Wayne Huizenga of his intentions in a face-to-face meeting and then informed all of his coaches by speakerphone that he was leaving to accept the Alabama position, ESPN's Chris Mortensen reports. As of late Wednesday morning, Saban was not yet headed to Tuscaloosa for a formal introduction.

"All indications are that he's coming, but I know they're not in the air yet," an Alabama athletic department official told ESPN.com's Mark Schlabach.

Alabama made its formal offer to Saban on Monday after rumors swirled for weeks that the Crimson Tide were pursuing the former LSU coach. The offer, believed to run from eight to 10 years, is worth $35 million to $40 million, and includes many variables, ESPN's Chris Mortensen reported Monday.

Saban has been damned to the "College Only" crowd if he does well with Alabama. You cant win at LSU, then not improve an NFL team to only run back to NCAA and start winning again.

Saban is lucky he is getting paid, because he has entered a Lose/Lose situation.

Lose at Bama and be second guessed the rest of your life and probably damn your career

Win at Bama and be a Carrol-esque NCAA coach forever and permanently Lose the NFL and be stuck with the College label.

I think Saban is in a whole other boat because he chose to leave the NFL rather than being fired. I can't think of anyone else who has done that (vacating a NFL head coach job for a college job). As for "losing the NFL" you never know, I think Carrol could get another shot at the pros if he really wanted to.

Maybe he did make the meeting, who knows. In the race to break the story everyone was saying something different. :(

Some coaches don't mind being "stuck" with the college label, ie Jim Tressel. Yes, I know he hasn't coached NFL but I'm in the camp thinking he doesn't want to (likes working with young adults much better than overpaid headcases).

I'd be thrilled to be stuck in college. Top college jobs are 10 times better than top pro jobs.

Expect Saban to stay 3-4 years at most.

He has a personality that's very demanding and tough and wears on his staff and players.
Where might he go though? Perhaps simply into retirement?

I cannot see the pros welcoming him back with open arms. And his reputation in the college ranks is good on recruiting, but, as you suggest, bad on longevity.

He's a tyrant who gets results but wears out his welcome kind of quick.

How often do you ever see the guy even smile?

Rumor has it his over-the-top factor in making the decision was that his wife hated Miami and wanted to move back to a smaller town. I expect he'll be there for a while, but he won't have the same success he had at LSU.
