Behind Enemy Lines
Like the hedge hog, we dug a little more underground every day, doing the little things necessary without seeking or seeing glory. Then 16 games later we pop out of the ground and suddenly we’ve gone a whole mile and we’re holding the Natty. Then we turn our eyes to the north and send them a Giant Fuck You.i’m always surprised how many guys who take over leadership roles turn their noses up at letting the guy who was in the chair before them share their experiences and their methods.
leaders have huge egos. and some can be very fragile, especially if they are young and idealistic. it takes a big man to be open to criticism and advice (from people who care about you).
i was happy to hear day quoting the book “good to great” in one of his post-championship interviews. that’s a very very good book that talks about what are the qualities and characteristics that separate good companies (and leaders) from great ones. and day quoting it means that he is searching and learning and growing…
and that’s the only (primary) necessary ingredient in great leadership in my imo. “good to great” calls that the “hedgehog concept”
That last part wasn’t in Good to Great. But it should have been.

Are you thinking of the 2004 National Championship game they won over Oklahoma? The NCAA vacated that win when Reggie Bush was declared ineligible. But that was over illegal contact with an agent, not drugs.
Charles White's drug use didn't come to light till after his NFL career was over as I recall. He was found incoherent and half naked holding a garbage can lid in a field in L.A. I seem to remember.

While it didn‘t feel like a good think in late November, losing to TSUN was the catalyst for the post season. Provided fuel for the fire and kept us from getting further beat up by having to play in the Big Ten Championship……
