NCAA, Florida State to pay $325k to media attorneys

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Florida State and the NCAA are paying $325,000 in legal fees to compensate the attorneys of news media companies that sued to force the release of documents in the Seminoles' academic cheating scandal.

The records were part of an NCAA investigation that eventually implicated 61 athletes and stripped the school of victories in 10 men's and women's sports.

Florida state and the NCAA tried to block the release in a series of appeals. But the Florida Supreme Court affirmed a lower court decision determining the records were public and refused in May to reconsider the case.

Under the agreement filed Friday in court, the school will pay $65,000 and the NCAA will transfer $260,000 to the attorneys who represented more than 20 outlets, including the Associated Press.
Cont'd ...

The 2010 FSU Media Guide contains a section entitled "Academics", with a page pointing out (justifiably so) the accomplishments of the highly touted Rhodes Scholar, Myrone Rolle.

Unfortunate that his name is spelled "Myron".

That's embarrassing. Not as embarrassing as featuring a crocodile instead of a Gator on the 2003 UF media guide.

FSU's #3 wide receiver Jarmon Fortson kicked off the team for repeat drug test failures. When asked, Fortson said "Ehh...what??? Huh?? Got anything to eat?....Potato chips???"
Fortson, a junior from Hurtsboro, Ala., was the Seminoles' third-leading receiver last season,
finishing with 45 catches for 610 yards with four touchdowns. He was expected to be one of quarterback
Christian Ponder's biggest weapons this coming season.

Word from Jimbo Fisher is that Tavares Pressley, running back, and Moses McCray, DT both suffered torn ACLs and are out for the season. Bill - what is the impact on this? Starters, second string or weren't going to play guys?

Sheesh, FSU is losing players like they're USC...

Saw on Whorechant where McCray started 9 games last year, but had some injury that knocked him to second string this spring. He was their biggest DT, and even though they are fighting about him not being a starter and so no big deal, the big junior was at the very least going to be in the mix and see playing time. A lack of dpeth at DT is not a good thing. Pressely was not a starter, but he did get some carries and a TD in the spring game. He is more of a sad story, as he had like three prior serious injuries and rehab. Horrible luck. I hope he took advantage of the opportunity for a degree.

I know you meant billmac, but it's gotta be tough to lose a guy whose ypc approaches infinity.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) -- Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher says defensive lineman Moses McCray and running back Tavares Pressley will miss the season with knee injuries.

McCray, a junior had started 14 games in the past two seasons. He was injured Saturday. Pressley, a junior, had none carries for 40 yards last season. He was hurt on Friday.

Fisher says neither player was hit. Both were injured while planting to make a cut.

Per FSU press release, redshirt junior cornerback Dionte Allen has voluntarily left the football team and been granted his release to transfer.
That's a familiar name...I seem to remember us recruiting him a couple of years back.

I believe he was the other guy from Michigan than Ronald Johnson...Both were pretty heavily recruited...

From Orchard Lake St. Mary's. One time UM "lock", later committing to FSU, but many thought he would end up at OSU at signing day. Can't help but think his career would be in a better standing if he hadn't migrated quite so far south.
