Florida State Seminoles (official thread)

Bowden baffled, as Seminoles have trouble recruiting players from South Florida

TALLAHASSEE - Bobby Bowden isn't sure why Florida State these days has fewer players from South Florida, but the Seminoles coach knows this much: "We're trying to get more," he said.

Bowden once built his program on a foundation of South Florida players — particularly those from the Miami area. Yet now, when FSU hosted Miami Monday night, senior cornerback Patrick Robinson was the only Miami native (Gulliver Prep) who started for the Seminoles.

Three others in FSU's starting lineup — left tackle Andrew Datko (St. Thomas Aquinas), receiver Richard Goodman (St. Thomas Aquinas) and defensive end Markus White (John I. Leonard) — also played their high school football in South Florida, but Bowden acknowledged his program hasn't been as successful as it once was at luring talent from Broward, Miami-Dade and Palm Beach counties.

Florida State running backs coach Dexter Carter one of four Seminoles assistants who won't be back next season

Andrew Carter ORLANDO SENTINEL December 8, 2009

TALLAHASSEE ? Days after Florida State hired a new running backs coach, the Seminoles current running backs coach said on Tuesday he was told last week by head-coach-to-be Jimbo Fisher that he wouldn't be retained after FSU plays against West Virginia in the Gator Bowl on Jan. 1.

Dexter Carter, a former Florida State standout who has coached the Seminoles' running backs since 2007, is one of four Florida State assistants who won't remain a part of the staff after the team's bowl game.

Carter said Fisher on Friday informed him, linebackers coach Chuck Amato, defensive ends coach Jody Allen and strength coach Todd Stroud that they would not be retained. Fisher didn't return a call seeking comment on Tuesday.

Carter said he "can't answer" why he was fired and cited FSU's solid running game during his three seasons here.

"I enjoyed coaching them," Carter said. "I feel like we were ? I guess the bottom line is ? productive. But it doesn't matter. Because [Fisher has] got to [put together] a staff in a manner in which he sees is the best fit as he moves forward. And he doesn't owe me an explanation, which I didn't ask for one and he didn't give."

Fisher over the weekend hired Eddie Gran, who had been coaching running backs at Tennessee. Before his one-year stint with the Volunteers, Gran coached at Auburn from 1998-2008, and at Mississippi from '94-'98.

Yup...pretty impressive. Jeff Luc, Lamarcus Joyner, now the hiring of Mark Stoops. I never thought Stoops would leave Arizona, where he workd with his brother, and I figured if he were to leave it'd be for a head coaching gig.

I'm regaining some enthusiasm for FSU football. The last 4 years I have been largely indifferent as Bobby paced the sidelines hoping to rack up wins he had very little influence on. Accept for funny, incoherent, halftime interviews.

I 'm not sure if this has been posted (I searched "Brenda Monk" and didn't find it); regardless, it was very interesting:

Admissions at Florida State
Earlier this month, former Florida State learning specialist Brenda Monk told ESPN The Magazine's Tom Farrey that during her time working with Seminoles student-athletes, more than a third of the football team and three-quarters of the basketball team had learning disabilities.

As a Gator I would stay away from that whole "Choak" message. Brings up a rather unpleasent memory of a game the Noles still talk about.

(granted - they have to go the past to have anything to talk about )
