Florida State Seminoles (official thread)

They are stressing that just because a guy doesn't travel to the game, it doesn't mean he was involved in the academic scandal.

Injuries, cheating, other violations leave 'Noles short 34 players

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Thirty-four Florida State players won't be going to the Dec. 31 Music City Bowl against Kentucky because of an academic cheating scandal, other violations of team rules or injuries.

Linebacker Dekoda Watson, cornerback Patrick Robinson, who had six interceptions, and three top defensive tackles were among the players sidelined either as a result of the ongoing investigation into an academic cheating scandal at the school or some other violation of team rules.

"It is very important that the media make clear that those missing the bowl trip are not included because of either injury or for a violation of team policy," associate athletic director Rob Wilson said in a statement accompanying the travel list. "It would be irresponsible to imply or state that any or all of the student-athletes will miss the trip for one particular reason."

Junior quarterback Xavier Lee, who started three games for the Seminoles, was among offensive players not traveling. The offensive line was also hit hard with tackle Caz Piurowski, offensive tackle Damon Rose and guard Jackie Claude not making the trip.

A violation of team rules could range from poor class attendance to a run-in with the law or failing a drug test, among many other things.

Using the 85 scholarship players on a team figure FSU is leaving 40% of its team behind. I honestly can't recall something like this, on this scale in my lifetime. Even for FSU fans, this has to be embarrassing.

FSU tabs Spetman as athletic director

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) -- Utah State athletic director Randy Spetman, a retired Air Force colonel with nearly a dozen years' experience running college athletic departments, was named Monday to take over Florida State's troubled program.

Spetman, 55, replaces interim athletic director Bill Proctor, who took over several weeks ago after the school bought out the final 13 months of Dave Hart Jr.'s contract. Hart left in December.

Spetman agreed to a five-year contract with Florida State. The deal was
still being completed and a salary was not immediately announced. Spetman then headed back to Logan, Utah, to formally resign later Monday. He said he hoped to be on the job at Florida State by the middle of next week.

Some significant issues are awaiting him at Florida State, which has been bogged down for months with an academic cheating scandal.

The school's major athletic programs -- football, basketball and baseball -- also have slumped in recent years while only its track and women's soccer programs have flourished. The cheating scandal affects several sports and will keep up to a dozen key players out of Florida State's first three football games in September.

"To be asked to serve as its athletics director is a great compliment, and I was thrilled to accept. I proudly served my country for many years with honor, commitment and pride. And I now look forward to bringing my skills as an athletics director to this university and serving Florida State University with the same honor, commitment and pride."

FSU president knocks Seminoles athletic department

Didn't trust athletic department to conduct cheating probe

Andrew Carter | Sentinel Staff Writer February 4, 2008
  • TALLAHASSEE - Florida State University President T.K. Wetherell told the
Orlando Sentinel in an exclusive interview that he did not trust the school's
athletic department to conduct an investigation into allegations of academic
    fraud involving approximately 50 athletes.

Wetherell, who will try to focus attention on a new era when he introduces
a new athletic director this morning, has told the Sentinel that officials in
the athletic department tried to "circle the wagons" when confronted with
    the allegations months ago.

FSU adjusts its football schedule in light of probe -- OrlandoSentinel.com

"Real slick" move by Bowden. At least you gotta give him credit for honesty.

TALLAHASSEE - Florida State has begun recent football seasons against the likes of Miami and Clemson, but because of an academic fraud scandal that will leave Coach Bobby Bowden's team short-handed, the Seminoles will open their 2008 season against two of the weaker teams they've played in recent memory.

FSU on Friday released its 2008 schedule, which features season-opening games at home against Division I-AA teams Western Carolina, on Sept. 6, and Chattanooga on Sept. 13. The Seminoles had begun their three previous seasons on Labor Day night in nationally televised games against marquee competition.

But Bowden acknowledged that wasn't an option this season because of FSU's investigation into academic fraud, which will leave his team without several starters for the first three games of 2008.

Keep in mind, these aren't only I-AA teams. These teams had a combined 3-21 record in I-AA last year. As in, the worst I-AA teams you can possibly scrounge up.
