Warchant.com - FSU Releases Statement On Bowl Participation

25 players suspended (won't make the trip) for cheating and or academic failure

Still cannot release names at this point. My guess is, they are still determining who will appeal vs. take the punishment

Bill, one concern of y'alls should be the fact that FSU's academic regulations call for anyone cheating to have (at minimum) the course count as an "F" or "0". The mere fact of the football team punishing for breaking rules may pale before the ramifications of players who were marginally academically qualified to play, but who now have the "F" to deal with.

I see summer school in bunches of players' futures.

Wouldn't be the first time. FSU has had the summer school plan going on for a very long time. Honestly, as a grad, I follow FSU and do root for them, but just laugh at stuff like this. The fact that FSU takes ridiculous amounts of players every year b/c they know some will never qualify bothers me. The fact that they do everything in their nature to get these kids through admissions bothers me as well.

Several years ago, every major player for Marcus Ball backed off b/c their was no way in hell he could be eligible, right? Every FSU fan thought it was a token offer so he'd consider us once he went the prep route. Great plan, except for the fact that admissions let him through like so many other football players.

In reading some posts over at warchant and being cynical about the whole ordeal, I really think this online course/tutor system was put in place b/c lot's of those athletes don't have the ability to do that work.

Of course, several of the guys named will probably be surprising (Weatherford possibly- which would be straight laziness on his part), but by in large I think a lot of these guys are getting pushed through to stay eligible strictly for football. Which is very sad to me.

As a Buckeye fan, I am very proud of the way JT handles the academic part of college as well as recruiting. He may take one or two borderline qualifiers a year, but JT also seems to have an eye for character and work ethic. I never second guess the players coming into the program at OSU, I can't say that about FSU.

Plus, go to warchant.com and say any of this and get ripped for being an OSU homer, and you can get the hell off their boards. It's night and day between the programs.

NoleSports has it as 23 not participating, perhaps up to 25, of which 11 have starting experience.

Florida State will be without at least 11 available players with starting experience when it plays Kentucky in the Music City Bowden. Twenty-three players, as of Tuesday afternoon, are expected to be penalized as a result of an academic misconduct case involving student-athletes and a former tutor who provided improper help with an online test, according to sources close to the process. An FSU official said the number could still grow or decrease. FSU confirmed, in a statement released Tuesday afternoon, up to 25 players will not participate in the bowl. Bobby Bowden did not specifically address the academic misconduct case.

Not all players who will the miss the game are tied to to this case - which may explain the discrepancy in numbers.

Bill - I want you to know that your mature and classy responses to this troubling issue is interfering with my Gator homer ability to revel in your problems.

Damn you!!

They would be prohibited from releasing the names, I do believe, owing to student privacy laws.

FWIW I have never been overly fond of FSU but having just read through the thread on the topic from Warchant I am pretty happy to see that the FSU fans are directing their anger in the right direction.

They are angry at the players, at the FSU employees involved and at the administration rather than trying to blame anyone except for those responsible.

Good for them....and good luck to their University.

This looks like an attempt at damage control by their president.

Blame the outgoing AD, the players, a faculty member and "one rogue tutor", but none of the current coaches, dadgum it.

FSU president cites lack of oversight

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) -- A lack of oversight by Florida State athletic department officials, an inattentive faculty member and rogue tutor were the causes of an academic cheating scandal involving about two dozen football players, the university's president said Friday.

President T.K. Wetherell described the course in question, a three-hour music history class, as "contaminated" and said changes have already been made.

Umm, couldn't the NCAA simply take that statement as de facto admission of lack of insitutional control? Not too smart to try and stake out a self-preserving position by cutting off the branch on which you are walking.
