flashback to '57...some similarities

Some things I noticed that are similar between the 2007 squad and the 1957 team.

- Both teams play an early season road game at Washington. In 1957 the game was tied 7-7 at the half untill Don Sutherlin returned a punt 81 yards to break it open. The Bucks end up winning 35-7. Lets see if the young 2007 Bucks don't struggle early before pulling away as well.

-The '57 team lost its best player(two time AA Jim Parker) and QB Frank Ellwood) from the previous year. It can be argued the 2007 team lost both in the same player.

-The '57 team was picked to finish 5th in the B10 and was 17th in the preseason AP poll. The 2007 team will not be ranked that low but just like '57 they will be well below the radar due to heavy personnel turnover.

-The '57 teams feature HB was a speedster from Akron (Don Clark) and they were a run first team(not real shocking given the era and the coach). The 2007 teams offensive hopes ride squarely on the burly and speedy shoulders of another kid from Akron.

-In 1957 a legendary coach was entering his 7th season in charge of the Buckeyes, had produced a Heisman trophy winner, back to back B10 titles, a National Championship and was in search of another. The 2007 version has a better win % in those first 6 years, a better record vs scUM, more B10 titles and is every bit the legend in the making WWH was in 1957.

Just some random musings.

Move along...nothing to see here...no possible weird metaphysical connection to a NC exactly 50 years ago...not a lot of subtle similarities....move along.

Yeah, whatever you say.

Freakin' eerie.

The equipment that was used during the 57' season of the Buckeyes has changed so much. And I think our social structure and behavior of college people have changed also. It was such a different time back then compared to what we have and what we do that the comparison is such a drastic change. Woody Hayes set the mode for Ohio State Football then and it carries on today some 50 years later. Another thing to think about is that
there was not alot of exposure in college football. All you knew was reading the paper and seeing the stats and some bits of quotes from the coaching staff.

Today we have ESPN and the NFL channel to feed us to the gills of every kind of team - news - press conferences that we don't miss a thing about our favorite team. No stone is left unturned.

But the one thing that has not changed is the fact that Ohio State and the BIG 10 have carried on in thier scheduling of PAC 10 teams for such a long time. I was told along time ago that the SEC had always tried to schedule games with the BIG 10 and the PAC 8/10 that those two institutions were booked solid 8 to 10 years in advance. so the SEC gave up its effort and went elsewhere. Reading JAXBuck posts here made me think about those times and how fare we have come in college football. Nice post jax-buck.

I am not sure that your source is correct. As I understand it, SEC schools didn't schedule Big10 or Pac10 primarily because they didn't like to play against teams with "colored" players. In fact, some states made laws outlawing competition between members of a different race.

But back to the topic, we lost one in 1957. I think it is safe to say that if we lose one, we will not be able to get to the NC game. In fact, even if we win out, there is a chance we will be Auburn of 2004.

That is correct but you can still see a parallel.

In '57 we lost the home opener to TCU who was a huge underdog. In '07 we open with 2 teams that are huge dogs and struggle enough to raise a lot of national doubt about us.

In '57 the team rode the wave second half of the UW game and week by week gained enough national respect to be voted NC's even with the embarrassing TCU loss. Lets just see what happens in '07 with the week by week respect building after UW.

IMO '57 loss = 2007 too small MOV win. (I know I'm reaching but what the hell :wink2: worked for Nostradamus)
