Game Thread FIESTA BOWL: tOSU 21, Texas 24 (01-05-09)

If the Texas Dline is as talented as they have been hyped up to be and our Oline struggles.....we will need to some how open up the field at the same time Pryor will need to get rid of the ball quickly. Obviously Pryor's scrambling ability helps against a good pass rush but can the screen plays, quick passes, etc be effective tonight??

Also just wondering but is there any designed shuffle pass in our playbook?? I've seen teams run this successfully once or twice a game against quick pass rushes.

Ya, some screen plays would be nice. Many successul teams screen to their "speedy" guys and give them space to run. A screen to Ted Ginn (whoops, haha, sorry, wishful thinking), a screen to Lamaar Thomas and just let him run, or Brandon Saine. It will keep the defense honest and maybe will open up the middle for Beanie and TP.

Funny story from outside the stadium yesterday...a dialogue between a father and his approx. 3 year old daughter:

Daughter: Daddy, it's better than Ohio Stadium.
Father: No its not honey.
Daughter: Yes Daddy, I like it better than Ohio Stadium.
Father: It's not better and it's called the Horseshoe.
Daughter: They call this the Horseshoe too? This one is nicer.
Father: It just looks nicer because it's newer, but the Horseshoe it better.
Daughter: I don't know Daddy.

The only way that's funny is if he dots her eye.

Also, Harrell to Crabtree is why you're not in the big one, Colt McCoy saved some guys life a few years back, Ohio State has never lost a home night game, AJ Hawk is dating Brady Quinn's sister, 2005 USC is the greatest team of all time (Texas doesn't stand a chance), and Craig Krenzel is majoring in molecular genetics.

I'm pretty sure you missed the QB controversy, the MoC fiasco and a QB taking money from a booster. Just trying to help out.

But did you know that Colt McCoy and Jordan Shipley are roomates and their dads played football together?

just so we're all clear, now is probably a good time to explain the college overtime rules. They're different than the NFL overtime rules.

Each team has a chance to start with the ball at the 25 and score. If they are tied after the first OT session, the ball is placed back at the 25 and each team has another chance.

Generally, you want your defense on the field first.

What about this new facemask rule; did it change?

Screens and shovel passes only really work when the D brings a linebacker or two, leaving a big gap at the second level and allowing the back to work in space. If the D is getting pressure with only the front 4, a screen pass catcher is going to be immideatley met with a linebacker for little or no gain. This is why getting pressure with the front 4 is so important and you hear people talking about that all the time. In the NCG last year, LSU got plenty of pressure with the D-line and our short passes and screens whent no where. Similarly, at Northwestern this year, our front 4 did a great job of getting pressure so they were pretty much shut down. Also, at USC, our front 4 couldn't do anything, so Sanchez either had tons of time to pick apart the secondary (you can't cover forever, someone will get open), or we would blitz a linebacker and that would leave the short dump off pass open for 10 or 15, which killed us.

I don't know what the key to the game is , but line play is critically important.

shoot the receivers downfield, let the TE hit the DE and slide off (which he will be trying to do anyway), and flare out the TE toward the side line, where the QB hits him with a pass. Should be good for ten yards a crack.

Countdown 4 1/2 hours to do. Go Bucks
