Field conditions at Ohio Stadium

And there we go again. WTF does the school have against gray? Why not just go Wisconsin and get it over with?

I have always thought the gray made the colors distinctive, it wasn't like red and white or blue and yellow, colors that get way overplayed. I really think a medium gray with the scarlet jerseys made OSU distinctive.

We have some design folks on board, why is gray getting less use?

well personally i was pleased with the jerseys when they came out because in the worst case scenario you still have gray helmets and pants so thats no big deal but i would really prefer to have gray letters instead of white ones. that kinda nags me a bit plus white really sticks out on a field.

Exactly...and people want to act like black in not part of the uniform at all....it amazes me that people still cant see the the stripes on the jersey matches the ones on the helmet.

Because it doesn't show up well on TV.

I thought the gray "O" at midfield was boring.

I thought the medium gray used in the pants few seasons back showed up better than the washed out gray they've used the last couple of seasons. It could well be that gray is harder to use on grass.

Exactly. The endzones in the Fiesta Bowls were great. I think that the projected end zone scheme is just that...projected. If enough folks raise hell they'll change the lettering to gray.

Well, the scarlet letters in the end zones (with the plain grass as background) used up until now didn't show up well either...and with the scarlet background the gray letters would stand out even more.

I also like the scarlet Block O instead of the gray one...

Agree, the pants used to actually be pretty much a metallic silver in color.

The pants now look lame.

It looks to me like the letters in the endzone might be outlined with gray. I can tell you from experience that letters outlined with a different color stand out significantly better on a field than ones that aren't.

I agree with you, gives it more contrast against the green turf if no background color is used.

One reason I'm assuming OSU never went with the red end zone is the extra amount of painting that would be required to prepare for every home game.

With the fake stuff you can paint it once and it's there to stay for a few years.

Seems like the fake stuff allows for more leeway in field deisgn.

Why the pants don't match is a different mystery... both in stripes, and color (w/ the helmet).

I don't consider 'off-white' to be grey. If shiny grey pants aren't truly grey, then they better ditch the helmet too (which would be sad). The silver flecks make a great helmet (vs a dull gray), why can't the pants be somewhat similar like they were? The spring game unis look so much better with the old pants.

Agreed, it was very bland.

The new numbers will be lined in grey. I'm typically a big 'gray' defender (seen above), but scarlet certainly needed to return to the field (besides tiny outlines).

Honestly, I don't love scarlet (overpowering) or grey (bland) endzones, but I like the former better.

If I designed the field, I'd do the same clear endzones (grey text with scarlet & white outlines), with a scarlet O at midfield (outlined in white).

I was waiting for your fashion commentary Josh!

I copied the image and zoomed in on it and yes, the white letters are indeed outlined in gray. Still, I think gray letters on a scarlet background--ala the Fiesta Bowls--is killer. I also think the scarlet Block O should be outlined in gray...

I'm pretty sure that is a true statement.

My guess would be that it will never be painted. The field will be made with the appropriate color fibers already in place. On site it is simply glued, or stitched together. The color is in the fiber, and will always be that color. It is possible to order the field any way you want it. No color, just lines and numbers, or the whole thing. I don't know what they want, if I hear I'll post it. Also, for special events, it is possible to paint additional logos then remove them after the event.

I suspected it was a pre assembled thing... there goes the notion that fans raising hell would cuase them to change.

So how fade resistant is the material? Any chance they could paint over it?

Guaranteed not to fade for at least 8 years, some brands more. Honestly, I don't think it ever fades, the whole 2 to 3 inch fiber is the same color. You can paint the stuff though, erase it, then paint again. I've never seen anyone paint over a logo to change it however.

Cool. I was unaware of that.

Should ultimately cut down on a lot of field maintenance costs even though I know that is a sore spot with you.
