FB/LB Zach Boren (Official Thread)

Another shout-out to Zach. This "throw-in offer" just paves the way for our backs to hit a big hole instead of a big lineman. I had to hit rewind several times last night just to watch him mow someone down again. It's awesome to have players like Zach on this team...lunch-pail guys who bring the wood. Great game Zach!

Totally agree. He is an amazing blocker and he plays with an easily identifiable mean streak. My favorite block of his was the sweep when Saine scored the 2nd TD. Zach sealed the corner and then proceeded to make a pile of Marshall players while Saine scooted in untouched. He's a definite asset to the offense.

Justin gets a lot of credit but I think Zach has been just as key to the improved running game going back to the middle of last year. He is a devastating blocker. I hope the staff continues to make fullback a priority. Zach's shown how beneficial that position is to this offense.

Boren is listed 6-0, 252 but said while dressed for the team picture that he is right around 258 pounds ? and feels better than ever.

?I?m actually a little heavier but I feel stronger,? he said. ?I worked out really hard in the offseason. Last year the knee injury was definitely in the back of my head. I?m over that now.?

Boren, the younger brother of senior left guard Justin Boren, also no longer is a rookie.

?This year I know what to expect,? he said. ?It?s a great feeling. Last year I had to learn the system and learn the basic stuff. It was definitely hard learning it through three weeks of camp, but this year I?ve been able to concentrate more on technical stuff like my footwork and things like that. I plan to open up and show what I can do this year.?

What Boren can do is devastate defenders as well as run and catch the ball effectively on occasion.

?Zach is a great athlete and a great fullback,? Herron said. ?He really does his job well and he really works hard. For him to come out as a freshman and do what he did last year was great. It?s really easy to find a hole when he?s back there because he does his job so great. I give all honors to him.?

Boren estimated that the offense utilized the fullback spot about 60 percent of the snaps last season. That number might actually increase of the Buckeyes continue to be effective with their base offense, especially against a team like Miami.

While the goal is to spread the wealth and find a reliable third receiver after Posey and Sanzenbacher, the Buckeyes are confident they can play smashmouth when necessary.

?We can definitely do that, especially with Boom and B.Saine behind us,? Boren said. ?It?s one of our strongsuits this year. We can pass it with DeVier and Dane on the outside but the running game is always in our back pocket. We have two great running backs and we also have TP, who?s another threat.?

In the process, Boren could find himself leading the charge for any number of teammates, which sometimes changes his approach.

?Before the snap is the only part that?s different,? he said. ?You have to point out your different checks and things like that. With B.Saine and Boom it?s a little bit more laid back in the backfield because we know what we?re doing, but with some of the younger guys you have to take control of them and yourself and you have to know what both are doing.?

Boren is comfortable with his secret-weapon status and says he and his new roommate, starting tight end Jake Stoneburner, often joke about it. Like Boren, Stoneburner could become a viable part of the offense ? and at a very opportune time with the Hurricanes sure to key on OSU?s most well-known offensive players.

?I expect a lot from Jake this year,? Boren said. ?We just moved in together this past year and I see how hard he?s been working. He?s a real big mismatch at the tight end position going up against linebackers. I expect a lot from him this year. He?s a person to keep your eye on.?

Borens glad to be teammates, not foes

COLUMBUS ? At least they are on the same team.

Both Justin and Zach Boren shook their head and smiled this week when they were told that fellow Ohio State teammate DeVier Posey would be facing his older brother, Julian, who is a starting cornerback for Ohio University, this weekend when the Buckeyes host the Bobcats in Ohio Stadium.

They know such an encounter might not have worked as well for them.

"We might get in a fight," starting left guard Justin said, hypothesizing what it would be like if he squared off against the brother two years his junior. "We might both get thrown out of the game if we played against each other."

Words echoed by Zach ? a mite smaller (6-foot, 252 pounds) than his big brother, who is 6-3, 320.

"We?d probably both get thrown out," the starting sophomore fullback confirmed. "The one that won (the head-to-head battle) ... the loser wouldn?t be happy about it and do something dumb. The other would retaliate every single time."

That?s just how they are ? competitive from head to toe, a personality trait they both have as the two oldest sons of Hope and Mike Boren ? a former swimmer and football player at Michigan, respectively.

"We?re competitive. The whole family is competitive," said Zach, including high school senior and youngest sibling Jacoby into the mix.

Yes, it's becoming more an more apparent that Zach is the key to our running game.

We are having little to no success in the stretch plays and other plays out of single back formations.
Boren in there makes a huge difference - see the third and one yesterday that Saine gained about 20 yards on.
We didn't even pull the guard over on that one.

I think you'll see alot more I formation in our big games.

Zach Boren among the Buckeyes' players of the week

By TIM MAY
As No.2 Ohio State turned its attention to Saturday's noon home game with Indiana, it announced its players of the game from the Big Ten opening victory at Illinois. They contained one mild surprise -- it wasn't that the Jim Parker offensive lineman award went to a Boren, but that it went to fullback Zach Boren, not his older brother Justin, the left guard.

Zach Boren was credited with helping the Buckeyes finally open some cracks in the the defense of the Illini, who were loading up to stop the run on the windy afternoon in Memorial Stadium.
