funny how it was actually debuted at Michigan State first.

The helmet was a result of manufacturing design. There were quite a few manufacturers in the 20's - 50's and most had a different, distinctive design that they used in stitching pieces of leather together. One manufacturer came up with a helmet in which the forehead area and the crown were cut and stitched in the same pattern that you see on today's Michigan helmet. If, like me, you grew up in the 50s you saw this helmet all the time, usually in red and light brown. It was a kids toy helmet, but it resembled the most popular pattern for leather helmets in the 40's. The same "wings" across the front, the same three stripes across the top.

At one point in time Ohio State used a helmet with a one piece "dome" of stiffened leather for the crown and the same kind of stitched pattern to form the the forehead, ears and back of the head. It looked to me as if the crown of the helmet was painted gray and the rest painted red. Looked like buckeye.

I know the "helmet with wings" gets slammed on here, but I admire it's iconic value. Like it or not, Michigan discovered a lasting image, one that is recognizable by anyone who follows football. It may be the helmet with the greatest instant recognition factor in all of football.

A pile of shit is pretty recognizable as well. Doesn't mean i'd put it on my head.

And taken from Princeton.

Fritz Crisler introduced it to Princeton when he was the coach there. After Princeton he went to Michigan to coach and introduced the design to Michigan along with the colors. Of course Michigan retained the design while Princeton did not.

I know Michigan State debuted it but not sure how many games that lasted.

It has more to do with the helmet manufacturer. There were quite a few in the 20s - 60s then Riddle all but owned the product. Anyway, each manufacturer had his own way of sewing all the pieces together, one of which was in the wings and three stripes -- as a kid I remember that most toy helmets came in one style and two color patterns, red and light brown and green and light brown and both had the same "wings and stripes" pattern. So, Crisler probably brought more than just the design to Michigan, he probably brought the same manufacturer's helmet. Most manufacturers ran the stripes across the crown, from side to side and front to back. (see the stock photo of Chic Harley in BPs icon file) The manufacturer of the Princeton, Michigan State, Michigan helmet did not.

NFL-Cincinnati Bengals-childhood fave, first team I remember listening to on the radio. The last time I spoke w/ my grandfather before he died was when the Bengals were playing the 49ers in the Super Bowl the 1st time.

MLB-Reds-first and only baseball team I have ever paid attention to.

College-besides tOSU, of course.
Football-Nebraska-I had lots of relatives in the Omaha area, and I always remember watcing the Huskers play Oklahoma the day after Thanksgiving in Omaha. I also liked the option game of the Huskers under Osborne.
Hoops-Xavier-I'm from the Cincinnati area, I remember listening to Xavier hoops on WLW before I knew a thing about tOSU basketball. Georgetown-The uniforms were cool, and I liked how I could instantly rile up peoplein the 80s by telling them I was a Georgetown fan. One of my best friends was a Syracuse fan, so we would always watch the games together and argue/fight/talk trash about our teams.

buddy of mine isnt a huge football fan.. but i just had a football conversation with him and i am confused.
he is an tOSU student currently and roots for the bucks, until they play MSU... why MSU? because he was a defensive lineman in highschool, and he says "Their defensive line is the same even stack that we ran in Highschool." I am not proficient in X's and O's do the spartans run some uncommon dline formation or am I right to think this is odd.

LSU first and foremost.
Football and Baseball. not a huge fan of any other sports, but i keep an eye on how LSU is doing in those.

Pro teams:
NFL - I watch the Saints and hope they do well since they're the home team. But i have almost zero emotional investment in them.
if they win, great. if they lose, oh well.

MLB - as a kid i was a Braves fan because they were the only team televised down here.
then a few years back i got the extra innings package from DirecTv. became more of a fan of the game in general rather than any specific team. would watch whatever team was most interesting at any given time. and a lot of West Coast games because they're on late at night.

NBA - i sometimes watch the playoffs/finals. been to a few games in NOLA and enjoyed them. Just can't seem to get into since they broke up those awesom ass Knicks teams from the mid-90s
