Fairfield? Naaaah! It must only be because there's a Pepe's Pizza near there!
Now, Cary is supposed to be very nice! And Boise is nice. Scottsdale is nice. But, Overland Park?

I've never thought CBus was anything to write home about.

It's because of Columbus that I have this innate suspicion: any city that rises out of a flat cornfield is prolly no better than the cornfield. This suspicion persists in the absence of substantive exceptions.

Any city that was burnt to the ground by Sherman should've stayed burnt.

When I was teaching and traveling, the company I worked for was based in Mission, KS, which is part of the sprawling "Overland Park."

The Kansas City metro area covers over a dozen counties in KS and MO. One of those fringe areas lies in Johnson County, KS. Virtually all of Johnson County not considered part of Kansas City is named Overland Park.

You're 10 minutes from the city without being in the city. There is concrete everywhere, so you can get where you want to go and drive 70 mph en route, and there are A TON of tech jobs suddenly popping up in what was a run-down 'burb not even 10 years ago, which means if you've got an IQ of about 80 and your GED you're qualified.

College education? Pick your job and name your salary.

Big city income + small town cost of living = one of the best cities in America.

World Cities
Large: London
Small: Avignon
Vacation: Cape Town

US Cities
Large: Chicago (NYC a close second)
Small: Any small town along the Sonoma/Mendocino coastline
Vacation:Vegas (Yea, I know that it's a cliched choice, but with its recent focus on good restaurants, great bars and high end shopping, it can be very enjoyable for somewhere between 36 and 72 hours. Then, I just want to get the hell out of there.)

My Favorite City is My hometown; Marion Ohio.
Call me Sentimental but I have always loved being there .
Marion is located in NW central Ohio where rtes 4,23, and 309 intersect.
It was the home of Warren G. Harding, A president.
John Dean of Watergate fame
Mary Ellen Withrow , Secr. of the US treasury
Jim Thorpe Lived there and played Ball on local teams
And maybe the most famous of all ;
Best Buckeye of BP fame

And from Wiki
Marion is also the birthplace and childhood home of Norman Mattoon Thomas, four-time candidate for President of the United States under the Socialist Party of America ticket and co-founder of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU).

Marion Cemetery also has the dubious honor being home to the Merchant family grave marker, known in paranormal circles for its unintended movements. The marker consists of a large grey granite pedestal capped by a two-ton granite sphere (four feet in diameter). The sphere moves on its base several inches every year as measured by the distance traveled by the unpolished spot on what was originally where the sphere's bottom was mated to the pedestal.

What I find amusing is that like the several "pick your favorite car" threads that have graced this site, the choice of cities is done without regard to being able to actually own a place and still have money left over to do something. I love to visit San Francisco and New York, but housing costs and taxes make them all but impossible to consider... even with both of us teaching my wife and I could not afford to own a small 2 bedroom house in Berkeley (Ca) and that was in the 70s(!) I'd have to live in section 8 housing to afford Chicago, Boston, DC, Philly, Portland, Seattle, etc, etc.

Small college towns like Oxford, Ann Arbor, Madison, Lawrence, have been priced out of the range of most education professionals. The University of California system began buying and building condos and apartments in order to attract and retain faculty.

For that simple reason Cincinnati, Indianapolis and I presume Columbus remain towns with some semblence of urban life where you can afford to live close enough to the heart of the city to enjoy the urban experience.

Should it happen that my novel-in-waiting sells, or should I hit the lottery, look for me in San Francisco or Munich with spring in Cinque Terre. Till then, I remain Cincibuck
