  • My family has a treasured tradition we observe every year. Either on Christmas Day or the day after, like this year, we leave the house for a brief time. Our Labrador retriever then finds and eats the expensive Anthony Thomas Chocolate we buy for each other. 4 years in a row. Now, you may be asking "But JC, isn't chocolate really bad for dogs?". To that I would say "you would think". Doesn't seem to effect her much. Then you might ask "But JC, if it happens every year, why the fuck don't you make sure it is put out of her reach?". To that I would also say "you would think"

This year she was alone for 15 GODDAMNED MINUTES and went straight for my chocolate covered cherries. She is exhibiting no ill affects (per my wife). Well, until I get home.

At this point I believe your dog believes it (the chocolates) are her Christmas present from you to her.....

One of my favorites is the annual fight I have with my wife when my coked out brother-in-law shows up unannounced. At least unannounced to me. In the last 10 years I've lived in Oklahoma, new jersey, and now Georgia. He always shows up and I always kick him out. This year was particularly good. I live on Fort Benning, he has a criminal record. This means when he shows up to the front gate he isn't allowed on post without an escort. I get a call from the front gate asking me if I would come down to the gate and escort him to my house. I told the guards over the phone that I had no idea who he was. Turns out they take that sort of thing seriously. They cuff him and stick him in a cell while they go through all of his stuff. Sure enough there's pot in the car. Sooooo when my wife told me he'd been arrested she didn't think it was nearly as funny as I did. Good times.

We were talking about this topic this past weekend since my daughter is home from college - she's feeling nostalgic I guess and wants to make sure we don't skip any traditions... here are my top favorites...

1 - on Christmas eve, my daughter bakes a birthday cake, then on Christmas morning, we sing Happy Birthday to Jesus and have cake - its goofy but we've done it since the kids were little

2 - Christmas eve at my parents, their neighborhood all sets out luminaries (candles in milk jugs) - lining all of their yards along the road, its really neat to see it all lit up

3 - After we leave my folks place on Christmas Eve, there is a house in town that has something like 40 gazillion lights, (HUGE estate that goes for probably 1/2 mile of road frontage) - we drive by that every year before we head home.

As my kids get older (19 and 14) some of these traditions feel corny, but we just can't skip them - guess that's part of what this season is about
