Fallout: New Vegas

I have some time today, so I fired it up and I had my first crash. Everything is smooth until I get to Primm and talk to the NCR guy by the entrance. As soon I as I approached him it crashed to desktop.

Hope this isn't a pattern.

I'm going to update all drivers now to see if that helps a little...

So far it feels exactly like Fallout 3, which isn't a bad thing.

What kind of video card are you using (nvidia or ati)? There should be a fix for those on that website I posted above. After applying the fix I reset my video settings and they got turned down by quite a bit. New Vegas set my defaults as high.

One mod I am running now mods my map so it's in color and the icons are different. I'm using this one(because it was the only one out when I installed it) and here's another.

Is New Vegas a game worth buying for either of the consoles? I have both a PS3 and a 360. If it is worth buying for a console is one better than the other?

If the game isn't really as good on the consoles, what specs are the minimum I should have to run the game on a PC. I have 2 laptops and an old desktop that I could rebuild or replace parts if that wasn't going to be too expensive.

Probably not playable on your laptop or an old desktop (how old? What specs?).

When in doubt on a console game, rent. Of course unless you play 8 hours a day you will not finish the game in the rental time unless you have a plan where you can keep a game as long as you want.

FYI...a major patch for PC is coming out next week, and it is supposed to fix issues with NVidia cards (along with lots of bug fixes).

If you have nVidia, try this .dll out, put it in your Fallout directory: http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=34778 I wasn't experiencing a lot of crashes, but I was having massive FPS issues during conversations, no idea why. Fallout 3 ran fine on my gaming laptop, and this game isn't a step up or anything. Anyway, that .dll took care of the issue. Theres also an ATI card .dll on that site.

It's an Ati Radeon HD 4670.

I've only had that one crash so far after 3 hours of gameplay. So, hopefully that was an isolated incident.

I'm pretty happy with how this runs on my 2 year old comp, I can run everything in high detail with no noticeable lag or artifacting. I'm thankful they didn't up it to a new engine that would make my system obsolete.

Anyone have suggestions for mods that don't alter the story or negatively impact the gameplay?

I'm eying the one that optimizes the text for higher resolutions. Aside from that I haven't had time to look at too many.

If you can run the game on PC, I highly suggest it. The modding community is extensive for the game, so many cool things they can do. People like to rip on the modders and joke that they're all nude textures, but thats not true. Theres lots of cool mods out there, and some that are just helpful. I've downloaded everything from music mods (Changed the roaming music, not stations, to the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly soundtrack), weapon textures like one that changed all Microfusion Cells to Duracells. I had a mod for Fallout 3 where someone put a working movie theatre in D.C. that played old timey movies. Theres about a hundred different custom houses you can download, each with varrying detail and features. The modding community also creates fixes and temporary workarounds for bugs until Bethesda gets around to fixing them.

I'm not currently running a lot of mods myself, just a couple fixes for now until I finish the game. Once I'm done I'll play again and mod the crap out of it, had over 100 mods downloaded for Fallout 3.

I'm currently working on making my own custom radio station. I'm going to call it King's Radio/Elvis Radio or something along those lines. I'm going to play a bunch of Elvis tunes and might do some commentary as the King myself. I can't believe Bethesda didn't secure the rights to put some Elvis music in the game, I mean come on! Lets hear some Viva Las Vegas! Thats the idea behind the mod. I'm sure I'll have to find a way around the copyright stuff since a lot of Elvis music isn't public domain in the states.

FYI...new patch was released, and it fixes my performance issues. I can finally run on Ultra settings with no issues. I removed the .dll file, and it runs great.

I really wanted to get your opinions on the console versus the PC to see how much better the PC experience is over the console.

If I have the choice, I always go with a computer over a console. For one, I prefer a keyboard and mouse for this type of game. Second, my PC is much more powerful. I have an XBox 360 also, and the graphics capability is no where near what my PC can do. Plus with PC and Fallout games, there are tons of mods you can add.

Now, if you don't have a PC that can play it, a console is not a bad option. It won't look as good (it will still look pretty good though), won't have mods, etc. Yet it's still the same game, but played with a controller. I would never play first person shooters on a console, but recent Fallout games are 1st/3rd person shooters in a very weak sense. I could see playing it on a console, and enjoying it. Plus, with a console you can rent it.

Do you have specs on your PC? If you updated the CPU in 2008 with a dual core that should be fine. The big question is the GPU. That is always tough to determine minimum. The specs call for a minimum GeForce 6800 / ATI Radeon X1600. The problem you will run into is different generations have way different nomenclature (both NVidia and ATI are now at totally different nomenclature than the min you see). As long as you have it set to automatically update (which is the default, so unless you turned it off, yes, it will automatically update).

You can also right click on the game in your Steam list. In the drop down, go to properties. There is a tab for updates (where you can turn off auto updates), and you can click on update history.

What's the easiest way to get to New Vegas? Those deathclaws wipe me out every time.

You have to go the long way, take the other road on the map and go in the side.

That's the quick explanation.

I personally would go via Primm, then to Nipton, up to Novac and then head north to the city. I'd take the main questline to do it though, you'll have to go back anyways.

Take your time getting to Vegas. Theres a lot to do along the way, and you can miss some cool characters and party members otherwise. Cass and Boone are both pretty cool and good to have in a fight, both require short quests to pick them up though. Theres hundreds of locations even outside and around the Vegas Strip, theres no rush in completing the main quest line. From what I've seen, you could probably just do the main quest and complete it in a day or two, but it would be unsatisfying. Lately I've been reloading from multiple saves and checking out the different paths you can take leading up to the final battle, theres a lot of interesting characters like Caesar that you would miss if you didn't see all the options.
