F DeShaun "The Diesel" Thomas (Panathinaikos - Greece)

Agree completely. His touch in that range is unreal and he never uses the glass and his shots almost never touch the rim. We'll have some trouble with zones since we don't shoot it great from outside, but if we can find Thomas in space in the middle of the zone, he is deadly there.

Big Ten player of the week

Ohio State sophomore Deshaun Thomas earned his first career Big Ten Player of the Week award Monday after leading the No. 2 Buckeyes to a pair of wins over South Carolina (76-66, Dec. 17) and USC Upstate (82-58, Dec. 14) . He has made 17-consecutive shots from inside the 3-point line, hitting his last six attempts against South Carolina Upstate Dec. 14 and then all 11 2-pointers in the road win at South Carolina Dec. 17.

Raising his game
Since making a mental adjustment, sophomore Deshaun Thomas has become a big-time scorer in the absence of an injured Jared Sullinger

Neither Ohio State coach Thad Matta nor sophomore Deshaun Thomas remembers exactly which game it was the past six weeks.

This time of year, the games come and go swiftly, like ? well, like the shots that used to come off Thomas? fingertips.

Both, however, do remember the message Matta imparted to his forward during a one-sided halftime chat.

?I knew he wasn?t ready to play before the game,? Matta said, ?and he went out and he wasn?t ready to play.? So they talked. ?And the second half, he comes out and has a big second half,? Matta said. ?Obviously, he?s very gifted. But he?s learning the other side of it, and at times maybe the most important side of it. As I?ve told him, as long as he stays hungry and stays focused, I think he?s going to continue to play at the level he?s capable of playing at.?

Thomas? level has been very high lately, a rise coinciding with the second-ranked Buckeyes needing someone to step up and help fill the void created by injuries to All-America center Jared Sullinger.

More than anyone else, Thomas has.

In the past four games, including games at Kansas and South Carolina that Sullinger missed all or the majority of, Thomas has averaged 22 points, shot 76.6 percent from the field, and even chipped in eight assists ? three more than he had in the first eight games combined.

He also has become more of a three-point threat, making 10 of 21 attempts in that time after hitting less than one-third of his attempts before that.

Ohio State ends the nonconference portion of its schedule tonight against Miami University at Nationwide Arena.

?(Matta) knows what I can do when I have my mind right. My game is right,? Thomas said. ?Ever since he told me that and gave me that talk, things have been successful. So I always prepare my mind before a game, listen to the music I like and just prepare for any challenge.?

Thomas fills his head with Lil Wayne music before games.

?A lot of stuff to get me pumped up and hyped,? he said. ?It?s just all a mind-set. As a player, you?ve got to have a mind-set each and every game, have your mind ready to play. I think I?m growing (like) that.?

Tony Parker thinks Thomas is gone. Is he really a good NBA prospect right now? I haven't seen him on any mock drafts

Personally, I don't see how his game translates to the NBA just yet. There are SG's that are bigger than him in the NBA. His game is that of a PF, but his size is more like a SG or SF. My big concern would be that he always moves a little stiff for someone who would likely be playing SF in the NBA. However, the way he scores and rebounds and plays defense, it is easy to see he is hungry to get better. That is the attitude I like to see. Gives me reason to believe he can succeed in the NBA even if he leaves this year.

Sully has been the star but Thomas has arguably been carrying this team all year.

Agree, but watch the D when Sully is in the game. Everything that happens offensively starts with where Sullinger is on the court.

That said, Thomas is becoming the beast he was recruited to be.

Maybe it's just me being selfish but I think Thomas needs at least another year to be ready to play in the NBA. I possibly could change my mind after the Big Ten season but right now I just don't see a position where he fits comfortably in the NBA. Lack of size for the #4 and ballhandling for the #3. I think when he is done at Ohio State that he probably will play over in Europe where the game is much more suited to his style.

Thomas's game reminds me of Lamar Odom's game. The only problem is Lamar is about 5-6 inches taller than Thomas.

I ultimately think that Deshaun will be a solid NBA player. With that said, I think he should be a 4-year player at OSU.

Deshaun has developed his game on both ends of the floor.

If he does stay all 4 years, he'll potentially approach Buford's all-time scoring record (if WB gets it). Buford was averaging just over 12.9 PPG through his first 2 seasons, with a total of 904 points. After this season, Deshaun's career average should be close to 11.5 PPG with more total games played than WB through his first 2 seasons. Deshaun is on pace to be at about 850 total points through his sophomore season, depending on how many games OSU plays.

If Buford becomes OSU's all-time leading scorer, he could possibly only hold the record for two years if Thomas stays all four years.

From that point, I believe Deshaun would most likely average a higher clip as a Jr. and Sr. than Buford. DT could potentially score 2,200+ points if he stayed all 4 years and averaged about 18 PPG as a Jr. & Sr, which isn't a stretch IMO.

It's nice to have both William Buford and Deshaun Thomas as Buckeyes. Hopefully Deshaun's career in Scarlet & Gray is not even half way over at this point.
