F DeShaun "The Diesel" Thomas (Panathinaikos - Greece)

Thomas has a similar build and height as Ron Artest. The way DT scraps underneath has always reminded me of Artest. DT has shown a pure stroke the last month that Artest could only dream of. What we are seeing is that Thomas is a true scorer at the college level, not just in high school. His NBA success will likely be determined by his ability to guard the 2 and the 3. If he can guard there will be a place for his tweener game.

Ron Artest is significantly bigger/longer than Deshaun. And he's also significantly crazier.

Artest left St Johns at about 20 years old at 6'7'', 235 lbs. Both are broad shouldered strong based guys that generally don't play above the rim. Artest is one that has succeeded in the league with that body type. His longevity has been based on his defensive ability and intangible play. I will leave it to others as to DT's true height, but it looked like he had at least 1 inch plus on jim jackson in the after-game interview the other night. My point being that DT will be guarding perimeter players in the NBA. He isn't a power forward. He has the perimeter shot to play on the offensive end to complement the rest of his game. If he can continue to develop as a defender Iwould not sell him short.

Been hearing that he's considering leaving early. I hope he gets some good advice from Buford and hangs around a couple of years. If he wants to get drafted, he's going to have to show that he can handle the ball and defend the 2/3 out on the perimeter. He has not done that yet. Right now, he's really a tweener. He can guard an unathletic wing, or an undersized post player, but he won't have that option at the next level. If he stays all four years, however, he will be an unbelievable college player.

He's a good garbage player in that he gets a lot of offensive rebound put backs and garbage buckets. He does not have the athleticism to play the 3 at the next level. He would do himself a favor by working on becoming more consistent from the outside ala Lighty and Diebler. The dude can score...he just needs to be more consistent on both ends of the court. He would be better served at OSU vs. the Developmental League.

I think this Illinois game is a blow up game for Deshaun. If he decides to work inside-out, he could get more than 20 points. He will be too big for Illinois to handle and too athletic for them to put a bigger guy on him. If his head is right he could eat Illinois alive.

I agree. Illinois plays 4 guards and Leonard. Thomas will probably match up with Bertrand, who is coming off his biggest game of the year. Thomas should have his way with him physically (major mauling is more like it). If they bring in Griffey or Egwu (Leonard's backup) to guard him, he'll be way too athletic for either. I'm actually most interested to see how Sullinger handles Leonard, or vice versa for that matter.

Thomas seeks to stay humble, play hard
Former Luers standout thrives at Ohio State
By Pete DiPrimio
of The News-Sentinel

COLUMBUS, Ohio ? Deshaun Thomas didn't hesitate. Why should he? He's a high-scoring sophomore forward on a championship-caliber Ohio State team and all things remain possible.

Yes, that means not losing another basketball game.

?Oh, yeah,? he said when asked whether the No. 6 Buckeyes could win out. ?If we come out and play hard and do what we're supposed to do, we can win another Big Ten championship.?

Such titles have become the norm in Columbus. They've won three championships in the last five years, including the last two.

Thomas, a former Bishop Luers standout, was a freshman role player on last year's title team. Now he's a starter and emerging star. He averages 15.1 points and 4.1 rebounds, and shoots 55.3 percent from the field, including 63.0 percent inside the three-point line. He's learned to play defense to coach Thad Matta's liking.

He understands his strong start, and that of Ohio State (16-3 overall, 4-2 in the Big Ten), is not guaranteed to last all season. It's about perspective as much as effort, focus as much as skill.

?For me, the keys are keep my head in, stay humble and play hard,? he said. ?For the team, it's coming together and staying as a family. Once we're together, good things happen.?

Good things happened Sunday against Indiana. The Buckeyes jumped on the Hoosiers early en route to an 80-63 win. That was payback for Ohio State's 74-70 loss in Assembly Hall on Dec. 31.

?It was great revenge,? Thomas said. ?We came out with fire and intensity. We had that intensity because we've been practicing real hard. We had three good practices before the game. You practice as you play and it showed (Sunday).?
