F DeShaun "The Diesel" Thomas (Panathinaikos - Greece)

Very good game for Thomas.

There was actually two different times that I thought he should've taken the shot and he passed it.

Who would've thunk it?

He's so good around the rim, which we already knew, but if he can play solid hustle D and make his outside shots, LOOKOUT!

True to some extent. His teammates aren't complete scrubs. They've got some skills, but struggled to finish some easy buckets around the hoop and definitely didn't have an outside game working for them (2-14 3pt, 31% overall). Leurs needed a big performance out of Thomas and he, along with his team, struggled against a MUCH smaller, quicker team. Howe, featuring star guard Larry Stone (5'9", IUPUI), is an IPS school that will make a run at state.

First impression of DeShaun- "this kid's a sophomore?!" He passes the look test to say the least. Very LeBron-esque in that he is larger than the competition. He's got a big body, not as muscular as LeBron, but that's not a knock on Thomas at all. Could use some definition, but heck the kid's only what 15, 16 years old?

DeShaun is very left-handed. Overall, his dribbling skills are impressive for a 6'7 sophomore, but he's not the guy to handle the ball on every possession. He showed good moves when trying to attack the hoop from the top of the key after it seemed the offense started to breakdown. He had a good spin move back to his left-hand and finished with a fingerroll in the lane. Passing skills- not applicable. He didn't really display them, so I'm not sure. I'll just say, I don't think he's going to be a PG, or have the basketball IQ/vision of LeBron. He's a 6'7"/6'8" forward with a good frame and the ability to go outside a little.

He got frustrated early after a few inside looks didn't fall and Howe began to pull away with some steals and easy lay-ins/dunks. After the inside game wasn't working, he looked to take his game outside, where he continued to struggle. He missed his first 9 shots, including I think 4 threes. He was able to get his shot off well after creating some space with a quick jab step or two, impressive for a kid his size. He likes his pull back J, which he tended to fade away from too much on some attempts. Good rotation and release, imo...his shots just weren't falling yesterday. His previous stats show that he has the ability to score in many different ways, but his jumper was not one of them in this particular game. 1-5 on threes, 7-19 total.

Where he did the majority of his damage was late in the game when he finally started to assert himself on the boards more. He got quite a few putbacks in the 4th quarter. Very soft touch around the rim and even a little further out in the lane. It's easy for him at this level to get some boards and go right back up for an easy lay-in, even when getting mauled by double/triple teams. He doesn't get up and down the court as fast as I thought he would. He looked tired from the high-pressure opponent. Still, this is an athletic KID. He's a sophomore and he was playing a very very tough, quick, and athletic team.

He ended the game with 20 pts and 10 boards, an impressive statline. #1 prospect for '10? I haven't seen any other recruits, so I'm really not in a position to say. Just looking at some physical skills and his overall game though, he has to be up there. I found him to be one of the most impressive looking kids (let alone sophomores) in an event full of D-1 prospects and the state's best teams... and that's even after a game that I'm sure wasn't his best. I'm very excited to see how he develops the rest of his HS career and can't wait for him to don the scarlet and gray .

Oh yeah...He did finish the game with a NICE highlight jam, much like the one featured in his youtube/scouting video. A guard got the steal in the final seconds and DeShaun finished with a sweet one-handed jam off the backboard as the buzzer went off. The kid's got some hops.

I might be forgetting some thoughts...it was a LONG day...I sat and watched around 11 straight hours of basketball (for only 12 bucks!). I'll take any questions and see what I can do. edit- I'll also try to get some thoughts in other prospects threads, though they won't be as extensive...I think Van Trese is the only other prospect that was close to OSU that played, since Offutt was out.

3 pts for Deshaun in the first quarter
1-4 FG, 0-1 3pt, 1-1 FT, 2 reb, 1 to

-Been fouled 4 times through the first quarter, getting hounded every touch, triple-teamed

-still plays like a young pup, gets frustrated, forces shots

15-9, Tipton leads Ft. Wayne Leurs after 1.

2nd quarter update

10 pts, 6 rebs
4-9 fg, 1-2 3pt, 1-1 FT, 1 blk

-could work on defense, has 2 lazy fouls, gets beat off dribble too often
-starting to get more involved on offense
-better player when he gets inside...got a couple inside buckets and then took his game outside for a nice 3
-picked up a 3rd foul on a bad over the back call...goes to the bench with 2 minutes left in the half

Leurs picked up their game (and the pace), looked a lot better

Tipton hits a 40 footer as time expires
31-28 at the half

3rd quarter update
16 pts, 7 rebs, 1 blk
7-12 fg, 1-2 3pt, 1-1 ft

-he's bigger and stronger than everyone on the court, I like how he's starting to enforce his game closer to the basket
-continues to draw fouls with his size, mostly off the ball as Tipton tries to deny him the ball
-picked up his fourth with 3:37 to go in the 3rd, lazy D, got beat baseline and rode the guy with his hand
-nice to see him get the fans and bench involved as he sits on the sideline with 4 fouls

43-39 Bishop Leurs after 3.

OHSportsFan9;1111244; said:
22pts, 8 rebs, 1 blk
9-15 fg, 1-2 3pt, 3-3 fts

-starts 4th even with his foul trouble
-Leurs shows off their 4 corners offense
-airballs a 15 footer
-hits 2 fts as Tipton begins fouling with 3:30 left
-easy one-hand dunk
-2 hand dunk with 1:30 left (Tipton is just chasing, looking to foul, lots of open court)

Final: 72-64, Leurs will play in the championship later tonight, it will be on [tape-delayed] television as well, not sure I'll be home to watch, but I'll probably record it.

Announcers brought up a rumor that DeShaun may transfer to a prep school next year. I'd hate to see him leave the state but he only plays at the Class 2A level (4A is highest), so a move to a bigger prep school could be better for him down the road.

DeShaun had a monster game. He was way more aggressive in the 2nd half of the first game and carried the same drive in this game. Worked inside on a much smaller team, showed a strong post-up game. Got a lot of lay-ups and easy buckets in the lane. Good shooting touch from the free throw line going 17-19 on the night.

His game is beginning to remind me of former Buckeye JJ Sullinger. Both lefties with some height and extreme athleticism. They both carry a very wide base in the post and like pull up jumpers where they can rise up over defenders. The outside game is there, but they do there best down low on turnarounds, spins, and put backs. DeShaun has better handles and will be a better outside shooter by the time he gets on campus.

48 pts (34 in 2nd half and overtime)
15/25 fg, 17-19 FTs

Leurs wins their Regional and heads to Semi-state 94-81 in OT.

Definitely not LeBron in that aspect. :p

It's not like he plays a one-man game where he's totally blocking out his teammates, but on the other hand he certainly isn't out there distributing "dimes." He's not a bad teammate by any means, but he takes some bad shots, often out of frustration.

Young player, so it's something to add to his game.

He'll be a power wing player with some versatility. It'd be nice if he could implement some more passing in his game. He does well using his height to see over double/triple teams and kicking it out when he's in the post, but when he gets going towards the rim, it's to shoot, no matter the people around him. At the college level he's going to have to learn to get the ball back out after driving and drawing the big guys.

maybe not though, he is already 6'7" probably 225 and only 16 years old so going up against the bigs may not be a problem. :)

Another State Title for DeShaun. His team ran away with another championship (back-to-back). 67-49 Ft. Wayne Bishop Leurs.

As far as his game-

Another day at the office I suppose. 34 points (averaged 30 pts and 15 rebs). Didn't shoot entirely well. He does a lot of damage inside 10 ft, on the block, on the break, and putbacks. He was hitting turnarounds from 6-10ft with 2 and 3 guys guarding him. His jumper isn't bad. Has a good release with his left-hand. Gets good elevation, good rotation. He hit a few threes, though he missed a decent amount as well (8/10 on 2pt FGS, 3/10 on 3's). His free throws looked real good (9/10). He's gotta improve his defense and intensity for the college level. Maybe improve a little on his upper-body strength, but he's got a good base. Not much to say. He's just really good.

One minor knock (and I might have mentioned it the other times I've seen him)...He gets a little uninterested it seems. Could be because of the competition, always being box-and-one'd, doubled/tripled teamed, etc. I don't know, it's kind of hard to explain. It's not awful, I mean he puts up 30 and 10+ every game and his team wins by 20+ points. I'd like to see him more challenged. He's so talented. He's explosive, can handle the ball, rebound, and score from anywhere. He has all the tools. I guess it's just how HS ball is when there is a big talent gap. He's forced to sometimes just stay out of the play so his teammates can take advantage. For those that saw him play, what was LeBron like in HS? Anyone notice a kind of similar thing (maybe not going all out on D)?

DeShaun isn't LeBron level, but he's definitely something special.

881 points to go for the Indiana state record (if he stays). Would be cool to have Indiana's all-time leading scorer AND Ohio's. You think we'd hear about that in 2010? :p
*ahem*

If anyone is looking for a basketball scout. :wink2:

Thomas excels at both ends in Ohio State romp (video)
Sophomore keys first half run
By Tom Davis
of The News-Sentinel

COLUMBUS, Ohio ? Dick Vitale was aghast and basketball fans around Fort Wayne were relieved after second-ranked Ohio State's 85-63 humiliation of Duke at the Value City Arena on Tuesday.

What left the ESPN mouthpiece gaga and Summit City hoop aficionados smiling was not the play of the Buckeyes, but more specifically, that of favorite son Deshaun Thomas.

?I wanted to have a big game,? Thomas said. ?I was kind of the x-factor.?

Ohio State opened and closed the first half of Tuesday's game dominating at both ends of the floor to take a 47-28 halftime lead over the fourth-ranked Blue Devils (7-1). Thomas wasn't responsible for the 11-0 start, but he single-handedly took care of Duke to close the first 20 minutes of play.

The 6-foot-6 forward scored nine consecutive points during a 9-2 Buckeye tear to take a 38-26 lead and turn it into a 47-28 advantage.

?It kind of fell into place,? Ohio State coach Thad Matta said of Thomas' scoring streak. ?He's got a knack for finding (points).?

The scoring run left Vitale exclaiming that Tuesday was Thomas' coming out party nationally.

?That's what Deshaun does,? Ohio State guard Aaron Craft said. ?I don't know if you know what he did in high school, but Deshaun has come a long way. He understands that every shot is important now and that is just a testament to what kind of kid he is. He's definitely very coachable and he was able to knock down easy shots for us.?

It's time to start talking about Thomas becoming an elite defender. He took Ryan Kelly completely out of the game and parked his ass on the bench. That's been an underestimated factor in last night's win.

Ironic as it is, part of his defense is his offense -- you can't leave a guy out on the floor who can't score on DeShaun and who at the same time can't stop DeShaun, and you can't score when you're sitting with the grad assistants. :tongue2:

If he keeps things up on the defensive end, Thomas is going to present the most difficult matchup problem all year for opposing coaches, IMO.

I was reading your first part and thinking that the biggest factor in Kelly going to the bench was DT's offense and not his defense... Then I got to the second paragraph and realised you were thinking the same thing. :)

At this point he is our third option to score behind Sully and Buford, but if you put a bad defender on him he can quickly become option 1. I love what he brings to the table!

So nice that he is focusing on defense, and grasps that defense creates offense.

Especially since he will probably still have games where he starts out 0 for 6 or something... when that happens, you buckle down, play defense, rebound and go to the rim and the shot eventually comes back.

Very nice.

You know, it looked like all 7 or 8 Buckeyes were super-focused on D.

Good coaching.
