F DeShaun "The Diesel" Thomas (Panathinaikos - Greece)

El Vaquero. Used to be the best. Haven't been there in around a year, but it was a deterioration in quality that caused me to stop going regularly. Rancho Alegre on 33 is better.

Thomas layed out some poor A&T kid on a screen late in the game. It was almost vicious. Not that Thomas was looking to be dirty, just that he's put together and he didn't have much "give" in him when contact was made. (Sully is a beast too, I should add)

Like I said on the game thread, when he is "into" it, he can dominate. Of course, we'll have to see if he can do it against better competition, but he sure looked good tonight.

Was very impressed with Thomas.

If you want really good Mexican in Columbus, there is a place on Riverside Dr. just south of 161. It is called Cabo something or other. A little better than Rancho Allegre and WAYYY better than El Vaq.

And yes, I was way more interested in the Mexican food discussion than Thomas. :sad2:

All of the freshmen have been phenomenal so far but Thomas is the one that has my attention...the dude just has it all. Scores down low, rebounds, plays good D and always contests the shot, great shot range...I'm having trouble identifying a serious weakness in Thomas' game. He has just been a pleasure to watch so far.

Agree. Even though he had a tremendous reputation as a scorer coming out of high school his all-around game has been a pleasant surprise in addition to his 3 point shooting. Sometimes I think he pulls the trigger a little too fast but then all of a sudden is going through the bottom of the net. He will help give the other 3 wing players some rest during the season and their legs will be much better off because of that.

Thomas' fall, fortunately, resulted only in a bruise, and he is expected to play when the Buckeyes resume their schedule Thursday night against IUPUI in Value City Arena.

"He could have gone back in that night," Matta said. But at halftime, he said, athletic trainer Vince O'Brien advised Matta not to play him if he didn't have to.

Thomas concurred that he felt well enough to go back in the game.

"You know, when you?re out there and playing and stuff, you don?t feel the pain," he said. "But afterward, I felt the pain. After the game, I went home, woke up the next morning, it was really sore."

Thomas said the area was treated with ice but not scanned or x-rayed for a fracture.

"They checked my alignment and everything, and everything was straight," he said. "It was just really bruised, really sore."

Deshaun Thomas gets little playing time in win
By Tom Davis
of The News-Sentinel

COLUMBUS, Ohio ? Venturing through the first year of college basketball at the highest level can be humbling for any player. It is no different even if you were the Indiana Mr. Basketball.

Deshaun Thomas is learning in many ways as he goes through his freshman season at Ohio State. In Thursday's 75-64 Buckeyes victory over IUPUI at the Schottenstein Center in front of 11,410 fans, he learned to be a supportive teammate while not playing much.

?He's making tremendous progress,? Ohio State coach Thad Matta said.

Despite that progress, Thomas saw only nine minutes of action against the Jaguars (4-6). Matta said that wasn't his plan for Thomas.

?We needed to give him more minutes tonight,? Matta said. ?I went into the game tonight saying that we need to play him 20 minutes because of how he has practiced.?

Thomas entered the game at the 13:51 mark of the first half in place of senior starter David Lighty.

His first shot was a missed three-pointer against the IUPUI 2-3 zone.

Thomas has struggled from long range this season, but his shooting overall has been solid.

He has played in all six games and shot 56 percent from the floor, but just 28 percent from three-point range.

He's played well enough to get more minutes. He's been very active under the boards imo, especially the offensive boards. Hope he stays patient and picks up his defense. We need him to get to the promise land.

Meet a Buckeye: Deshaun Thomas
Friday, December 10, 2010
By BOB BAPTIST
The Columbus Dispatch

thomas600.jpg

Freshman Deshaun Thomas is one of three McDonald's All-Americans on the Ohio State men's basketball roster (William Buford and Jared Sullinger are the others) and the only one coming off the bench for the No.2-ranked Buckeyes. He is making the most of his time. Entering Sunday's game against Western Carolina, Thomas, a 6-foot-6 forward from Fort Wayne, Ind., was the team's third-leading scorer (13 points per game) and rebounder (5.3) while averaging just 17.2 minutes. He has shown a nose for the ball that is a rare trait among players, and that served as a starting point for our conversation:

Q: Can you explain your knack for always seeming to be around the ball?

A: It was always like that. You really can't teach that. It's a God-given talent. I've been doing that since middle school. I was averaging like 45 (points) and 33 rebounds and stuff like that. It's like I'm attached by a string to the ball because I'm always in very good position.

Q: You took a nasty fall on your back just before halftime at Florida State and didn't play in the second half. On replay, it resembled the fall that knocked Evan Turner out of the lineup for a month last season. Were you injured?

A: It was a bruise. Nothing major. I was well enough to go back (in). When you're out there and playing, you don't feel the pain. But afterward, I felt the pain. I went home, woke up the next morning and it was really sore.

Q: You finished your high school career as the third-leading scorer in state history, 116 points from the record. Any regrets about not being No.1?

A: Yeah, I was thinking about it. But you know, if you really look back at it, I had a heck of a high school career. Third is not that bad. I wish I was No.1, but you've just got to move on. You can't win all the time.

Q: Your nickname in high school was "The Diesel." Why? Were you like Shaq?

A: In YMCA ball, my coach gave it to me because I was always bigger than everybody and I was playing center because I was so tall. I was like 6 feet as a fifth-grader. He nicknamed me "The Diesel" because I was just nonstop in the post.

I hope Deshaun keeps working harder and harder on defense, and cleans up his shot selection a bit, because he really can be that added spark off the bench. It is obvious however to we fans, who have watched Buckeye basketball for years that, if you play hard on the defensive end, you will play more. I would think that after the IUPIU second half player rotation :tongue2:, that message was sent to more than just we fans :wink2:

Thomas shares freshman impact for No. 2 Ohio State
By Pete DiPrimio
of The News-Sentinel

BLOOMINGTON ? Deshaun Thomas isn?t greedy. Okay, maybe the Ohio State freshman is, not for himself as much as his unbeaten, second-ranked team.

Is that so bad?

?With how many teammates shoot the ball well,? he said, ?we?re aiming for 100 every game.?

The Buckeyes have done it twice this season, including a 100-44 torching of Tennessee-Martin Monday night, and topped 90 points three other times. Thomas, a former Bishop Luers standout and Indiana Mr. Basketball, has contributed his share.

The 6-6, 230-pound swingman averages 11.7 points, with a high of 24 against North Carolina A&T, and shoots 50.9 percent from the field. He?s second on the team with a 5.4 rebound average. He does all that while averaging 18.2 off-the-bench minutes. He?s won one Big Ten freshman of the week award.

?That?s the impact we thought he would have,? coach Thad Matta said.

On any other team in the country, Thomas would be the freshman sensation. For the Buckeyes, sensationalism starts with freshman Jared Sullinger. The 6-9, 280-pounder averages 17.5 points and 10.1 rebounds. He?s won six conference freshman of the week awards. He?s coming off his sixth double-double of the season, an 18-point, 11-rebound effort against Tennessee-Martin.

His shot selection is just fine IMO. His effective FG% is 54%, which is pretty doggone good; just about the same as Lighty's.

DeShaun has a pure scorer's mentality, which we haven't really seen here for a while. He takes a lot of quick shots, I agree, but they're usually solid choices. Once he gets his 3-point percentage above 35%, he'll be especially lethal.

If he keeps up the 54% shooting, he can shoot whenever he wants.
