F DeShaun "The Diesel" Thomas (Panathinaikos - Greece)

Watching Diesel play, it looks to me that he is a shoot first, unless absolutely a shot is not there. I think as a freshman, and with other great players around, he should look to pass instead of going for jumpers. Other than that, his future potential will be amazing.

I know what you mean he certainly does not have a pass first attitude but if he keeps on making a good percentage of his jump shots where he currently is doing he can just keep on shooting first. I think Matta will tell him when he is shooting too much:) Thomas issued a little bit over 50% from the field but his three-point percentage is only around 30% so maybe he should start cutting down on the number of threes he is putting up.

He's a scorer. He has a scorer's mentality. It's something you can't teach. Either a kid has it or he doesn't. Honestly I wouldn't change a thing right now about his offensive game as a freshman. He's going to score a lot of points at Ohio State if he sticks around a couple years more.

Kid's going to be a beast in the NBA IMO. Come tourney time, his ability to generate his own offense and crash the offensive glass is going to be huge.
I hate to start talking about him already ready for the NBA. He has much to learn to be ready for that league. He needs to improve his three-point shooting for his size because he is only shooting around 30% so far this season. He gets a lot of garbage points around the basket which he will not get when he does get to the NBA. Right now, he is a good college player with lots to learn.

I thought I was in the Sullinger thread and was thinking that LitBuck had lost his mind.

Thomas, Ohio State shoot down Indiana
Luers grad returns to Hoosier State as No. 2 Buckeyes roll
LaMond Pope | The Journal Gazette

BLOOMINGTON ? Deshaun Thomas asked his teammates if they had any extra tickets he could get to give to friends and family for his first game at Assembly Hall.

The Ohio State freshman, a Bishop Luers graduate, said he rounded up 18 tickets.

Those in attendance got to see quite the shooting display by Thomas? teammates. Ohio State shot 60 percent, knocking off Indiana 85-67 in front of 14,883 fans.

?This game was something special for me, coming back home,? said Thomas, who had eight points.

Thomas has been a key factor off Ohio State?s bench. He watched early as the No. 2 Buckeyes (14-0, 1-0 Big Ten) nearly couldn?t miss.

Ohio State shot 71 percent in the first half (15 of 21), including 64 percent from three-point territory (7 for 11). The Buckeyes finished with 13 three-pointers, matching the record for most by an opponent at Assembly Hall (Northwestern set the mark last season).

?That?s what you have to do,? Thomas said, ?you have to hit big shots.?

As for Thomas, he played 13 minutes, making 6 of 7 free throws.

?Me getting a lot of playing time, it?s good, that let?s you know that coach has good trust in me,? Thomas said.

Thomas came into the game averaging 11.7 points.

?He came to Ohio State with maybe the greatest attitude I?ve ever seen. He?s a guy who can come in and really score the basketball for us,? Ohio State coach Thad Matta said. ?The thing I?m most proud about Deshaun right now is how he is picking up what we are trying to do defensively and just how hard he?s playing.?

Didn't say he was ready now, but it's seems all but inevitable to me that he'll get there.

Down one of the Big Ten network's shows last night, they were talking about the top freshman in the Big 10 and the writer from the Sporting News said that if Thomas would do more things around the basket especially rebound and play tough defense instead of shooting so much per minutes played, he probably would get more playing time and I tend to agree with his statement. He has to get into the flow of the game first before cranking up a couple shots right in a row which I would think his coach does not appreciate.

Guy must be watchin g a different game than I am. The kid gets an offensive rebound and put back in every game I have seen. I guess those 10-13 minutes a game gives you alot of time to get better. If we don't start playing Thomas more it will cost us in the end. He could be the difference on a NC run.

He leads the team in free throw % at 83.7%

Hes 2nd on team with 38 offensive rebounds...Sullinger has 57
Hes 2nd on team in rebounding with 80

He shoots 49.6 % from the floor 4th on team

Hes averaging 9.6 ppg

ALL IN 16 MPG!!! The guy is an idiot!!! Thomas would be leading the team in Trebounds and ORB if he were playing 30+ minutes!!! Hes also our best FT shooter. I'm watching a different game than some people...hes doing a hell of alot more than people think and the rebounding numbers show it. Lazy players don't rebound like that...sorry.

I'm very impressed by the offensive rebound numbers. Thomas is a much better rebounder than I thought he'd be. Color me impressed.

Once he stops jacking up out of rhythm threes and really commits to playing defense his minutes could go up quite a bit. Those are the only things holding him back in my IMO at this point.

I really enjoy watching him play basketball.

i agree completely with the statements in litl's post. thomas has shot 60% from 2-point range and 24% from 3-point range. his offensive rebounding percentage is off-the-charts. deshaun needs to commit himself to getting "ugly." he possesses a natural gift for locating rebounds and he has a tremendous feel around the bucket. if he instead worked from the inside-out and consistently passed out of double- and triple-teams, his minutes would dramatically increase. deshaun's defense must improve, but that is the case for almost all freshmen. i truly think that what limits playing time is that he forces his offense. under matta, usually it is a player's defense that limits minutes.
