ESPN's Training Days- The Ohio State University

Also, how beneficial has John Simon been for the young guys on the defensive side of the ball? The dude is a proven leader, and will not hesitate to call you out on missed assignments, missed tackles, etc.

I've had goose bumps watching all 4 of these episodes so far. Can't wait for football season!

I'd like to thank MD. That's some fine camera skills you got there.

I'd also like to thank coach UFM for clearly stating that this.....

will not be tolerated at tOSU.

Finally...I love me some Vrabel. He really is ONE BAD DUDE! He seems strong willed enough to make you better even if you don't want to be. Heaven help the first opposing player that tries to take a cheap shot at one of his guys, it has to be like signing your own death warrant.

No disrespect for Mr. Simon intended; but before the just-ended off-season, he struck me as a proven loner. I told my younger brother before the off-season that the question around which the whole season hinged would be the creation of leaders. Chief among the leaders had to be John Simon; and Urban Meyer's ability to turn him into a leader would be instrumental in a successful season.

The Number One take-away that I got from this series was that Coach Urban and Coach Mick had a plan for turning some soft-spoken guys into leaders and they executed that plan to perfection. Among the components of the plan was not allowing Simon to enter the weight room alone; but there were other aspects that were more subtle. For example, Urban sat next to Simon at the champions dinner. He proceeded to ask John who "his guys" are, specifically if C.J. is one. In doing so, Urban not only transferred some of his authority to Simon, but he also helped to groom a subordinate leader, CJ Barnett.

There were other signs of Urban building Simon's leadership and of the effects of same, but rather than leave a wall of text; I'll leave you with this. Creating leaders after you lose your senior leaders is one of the hardest jobs in coaching. Creating leaders from a team that was leaderless the year before is probably THE hardest job in coaching; especially when the top candidates are soft-spoken loners. Urb and Mick appear to have done a spectacular job.

September 1st CANNOT get here fast enough.

I think it was the second episode where Simon yanked aside a young DL and proceeded to coach him up big time. He seems to be very vocal so far thoughtout the series. Now, whether or not that is just because the cameras are there is a different matter...

This is exactly what I was talking about when I mentioned the signs of how effective his development as a leader has been. Simon did not used to be that guy. Now he is.

Also note that I mentioned coach Mick. I expect that Marotti's unseen efforts during the summer have a great deal to do with John Simon's development as a leader.

My favorite part of the series is when Vrabel is yelling at Simon saying something to the tune of: "Get off the field, you aren't good" Obviously Vrabel likes to have fun with him.

I watched that scene a second time. Here is how I took it....

Vrabel told Simon to get out of the drill to put in a second teamer. Simon didn't want to come out of the drill and said "i'm good coach". Coach then said "you aren't good". I took it as Vrabel wanting to see some other players and Simon wanting to take every rep possible.

Still thought it was a bit funny for Vrabel to say that.

Question: Have they showed any real footage of our other DC...Mr Withers????
I have been wondering the same thing for a few days now. Withers is unseen in the footage as far as I can see. I'd love to see what he's doing to our safeties this season.
