Just watched the hypothetical match up with USC '05 and Scum '97. Both Herbie and May predicted that USC would win the game. Fowler asked them to predict a score and Herbie thought 34-17 USC. Then May states (with a straight face) he thought it would be 49-14 USC. Herbie almost fell out of his chair and exclaimed "This is Michigan you know not Michigan State we are talking about.....

I don't like Scum but there is no way they would put up 49 on Michigan!! May is definitely smoking something!!!

May is absolutely obsessed with this year's USC team.

As has been said before, the '05 USC team is getting a ridiculous amount of respect for a team that has not yet even won the national title and was pushed to the brink of defeat by ND (9-2) and Fresno St. (an 8-4 WAC team with losses to Nevada and Louisiana Tech).

I frickin' hate this History In The Making shit! Does ESPN really expect people to take them seriously when they predict a team that hasn't won the national championship to blow out some of the best teams in college football history? Does anyone besides me have this burning feeling inside their stomachs wishing we had gone undefeated so we could have faced USC and been huge underdogs just like the 2003 Fiesta Bowl and beat them? I AM SICK OF ESPN AND THEIR LACK OF QUALITY JOURNALISM! I know some people will tell me to relax and their opinion doesn't matter but it's just ridiculous that they expect to be taken seriously. Anyone else get stressed out by sports?

It only takes about 10 minutes of watching ESPN programming to realize that they aren't to be taken seriously...simulated press conferences, "poetry slams", semi-conscious broadcasters, Lou Holtz, Mark May and all.

Unfortunately, about 85% of their viewership eats that shit up and genuinely believes that ESPN is a bona-fide news network.

Me and HAYN were just at The Shack (burger/beer join in my town) and we were watching from a distance the ESPN segment were Herbie and May picked the winner of the '99 FSU matchup. Guess what, both picked USC (couldn't hear the audio because the TV was too far away and the volume was all but off). We knew it was coming, but we both were still pissed off about it.

I'm really getting tired of ESPN's fellatio-fest of USC...

Mark May picked USC to win something like 42-14. He also said Chris Weinke is too pedestrian which makes me wonder when Matt Leinart suddenly became Mike Vick.

Some pretty hilarious stuff on the 'Horns web site. USC taking out the Blitzkrieg by 21 was my personal favorite. I wish them well as USC is the one team in the nation that can make me sometimes root for Notre Dame. One question remains unanswered, would Reggie Bush have won the Heisman/Nobel if Lee Majors had played this year?

Argh... just argh.

I have NO idea what this USC team has done to earn these accolades. Can ANYONE else tell me why years pass get factored into this equation?

If this were the first year USC entered the national title game, would they be getting this comparison? Of course not.

I have no idea what makes this USC team so complete. WHERE'S THE DEFENSE?

Look at all the rest of the teams on this list. Not one has a defense as bad as this USC one. I sure would like to see a good front 7 take a shot at that USC team.

I mean really... it's getting close to the old SNL Superfans.

Fowler: "Ok, now we have the '05 Trojans v. the Bears."

May: "Now, it's clear to me this is a one-sided match-up. There's one unit in this game that's dominant, and they'll take over the game. The Bears offense cannot keep up with the points that USC puts on the board. It's clear to me that no one can stop Reggie Bush. He goes for 412 yards on 22 carries and seven TDs. USC 105, Bears 0."

*20 minutes later*

Fowler: "...does THAT scenario get the game any closer?"

May: "So, we have the Bears defense, the Bengals offense, who does have Carson Palmer, the winner of one of the 3 rings in a row USC has already, and they are playing USC, whose offense will be playing with only 9 players, the entire team is wearing 10 lb weights on their backs in addition to their pads, and Reggie Bush has had a baker's dozen Vodka&Tonics and 4 pounds of horse tranquilizers before the game?"

Fowler: "Yes."

May: "Well, does Pete have to wear the weight too? Because this makes a big difference."

Fowler: "We'll say he does."

May: "Well, I'll have to give the nod to the '05 USC team. The tranquilizers will likely slow Reggie a bit for a half, but you cannot stop him. Reggie Bush 31 carries and 216 yards, 2 scores. The Trojans win on a late 50 yard scamper by Bush, 31-24. Reggie, will you allow me to bear your illegitimate son?"

ESPN's Bruce Feldman defends his '02 Buckeye over '05 USC pick:

From Pam in Torrance, Calif.: Bruce, I think you're showing your colors as a UCLA lover, aren't you? OSU over SC? How many players from that "great" OSU defense are in the NFL? USC's young defense I bet will have a lot more.

Yes, Pam, I'm always slighting the Trojans (I also take pride in ripping Rutgers, roller-blading Big 12 head coaches with a penchant for babbling on and Brooke Burke.) I do agree that there is quite a bit of young talent on the field for USC, but right now the only starters who I think are playing at an elite level are the safeties Darnell Bing and Scott Ware and the two DEs Lawrence Jackson and Frostee Rucker. The rest of that defense I think is still a year away from playing at an all-conference type level.

As for the "whatever became of those Buckeyes":

DT Tim Anderson: Third-rounder to the Bills. Starts. Has 34 tackles this season.
DT Kenny Peterson: Third-rounder to the Packers. Second-teamer. Has 16 tackles. 2 sacks.
DE: Darrion Scott: Third-rounder to the Vikings. Starts. 51 tackles. 4 sacks.
DE: Will Smith: First-rounder to the Saints. Starts. 57 tackles. 7.5 sacks.
LB: Matt Wilhelm: Fourth-rounder to the Chargers. Injured. 27 tackles. 1 INT.
LB: Cie Grant: Third-rounder to the Saints.
LB: Robert Reynolds: Fifth-rounder to the Titans. Injured. 11 tackles.
CB: Chris Gamble: First-rounder to the Panthers. Starter. 60 tackles. 6 INTs.
CB: Dustin Fox: Third-rounder to the Vikings. Practice squad.
S: Mike Doss: Second-rounder to the Colts: Starter. 68 tackles. 2 INTs.
S: Donnie Nickey: Fifth-rounder to the Titans. Second-teamer. 2 tackles.

Not bad.

I honestly think that Espin is playing this out. I don't think this is real. I think it is just for hype for the game.

If it is not, well then these people have major problems b/c they arent even the best USC team in the past 2 years and let alone they don't have a frickin' D, and a good D could stop Reggie Bush and then see what they do.

To add to Feldman's list above, Simon Fraser and Will Allen both played extensively in '02 and are in the pros. That's 13 off of one defense. Also, a freshman named Hawk played a fair amount. Of course, he's not in the NFL......yet.

That really is amazing. Are there any other defenses that anyone can think of in history that can rival that?
