ESPN (A bunch of Death-Spiraling maroons)

So... do they have a profit-motive-driven reason to non-objectively promote the SEC as superior or not?
Attempting to drive down the value of the next B1G conference TV deal. The same conference that told them to go fuck themselves and started a competing network. A conference that may be jumping to Fox.

Billions of motives the way I see it...

BTN is where it really all starts. If they lose x cents to Fox Sports on every dollar generated by publicizing the B1G (and PAC and B12 for that matter), then there starts to be a lot of reasons to publicize SEC and ACC.
Investing in SECN is basically doubling down on that bet. ACC frankly doesn't have much to offer in football and Texas is a dumpster fire making LHN an investment that's currently doing poorly but they hope will pay out in the long run.
The new tv deal just makes it clear that so long as their best profit comes from pumping the SEC ... they may as well devalue B1G even more, especially if there's a threat that they lose the contract.

The existing 10-year rights deal with ESPN alone worth a reported $1 billion expires following the 2016-17 academic year. If they haven't already begun, negotiations on that deal are expected to commence soon. League schools currently earn approximately $21 million per year.

Industry experts have predicted Fox will be a major player in bidding on the Big Ten. It is a partner with the conference in the Big Ten Network. Fox also has deals with the Big 12 and Pac-12 but has no postseason (bowl) presence now with the loss of the Cotton Bowl to the College Football Playoff. With the launch of Fox Sports 1, Fox also would be in need of content to drive viewership.
...
The Big Ten's bargaining position will be enhanced by the addition of a ninth conference game in 2016. That extra game means more inventory to sell to potential rightsholders as well as more content for that wildly successful Big Ten Network.

Herbstreit got together with Cowherd and had a totally objective conversation about ESPN's objectivity:

long story short said:
"The people are clueless when it comes to this, but it's low-hanging fruit, it's a sheep mentality. Fall in line with the local radio guy that's tooting his horn saying ESPN are a bunch of SEC guys. It's the easy thing to buy into and it could not be further from the truth."

:slappy: the more they talk the further they did themselves into a hole...

Honestly I'm surprised ESPN doesn't give these guys cue cards for when they go into do these interviews... That way they could feel at home like they do in the booth/gameday with the teleprompter rolling.
