Elderly Woman Causes Wrong-Way Crash

Elderly drivers are terrable down here... since I've been here there was a woman who drove through a fence and into a pool, a guy who backed into the arrivals terminal at the airport and numerous other things. One that I have seen in person a few times is this: A car stops in the middle of an intersection and backs up when the light turns red and they don't go through... they leave the car in reverse and when the light turns green... they back into the car behind them because they never put in back into drive.
you mean Terry the toad in American Graffitti was senile? :)

you should drive in florida.. HOLY SHIT.. i've never seen so many accidents in my entire life!

I was almost hit by two cars tonight while we we on our way to dinner... they were about 2 minutes apart. Both times we came within a foot of being hit. One was a young who was in a hurry to cut in front of me and the other was an old guy (who could barely see over the wheel) who just started to get over in my lane without even seeing me. BTW... I drive a Extended Trailblazer so it's hard to beleive I was in either of their blind spots.

Like George Carlin said,"after you hit 60 years old, you should be able to drive your age not the speed limit! If you're 75 years old, fuck it, that's your speed limit." That would certainly liven shit up out on the highway.
Personally, this is my favorite humorous post into this thread -- if only for bringing the now AARP qualified Carlin into the thread.

Now let's see if we all can folllow the bouncing ball of thought on these next two --

I totally agree with you here. I'm a big advocate of a light rail system in bigger cities like Columbus.

Just go to Europe to see the advantages of a good rail system, especially the Tube in London.

I do understand though that the reason places like London have such a good rail system is b/c the streets are too small and crowded so it's out of necessity and not so much convenience.
Having lived near London oh these many years gone by I can tell you that it is a great system. It cost a boatload of cash to build, (though due to terrain simplicity less than than the more challenging New York Subway). The one thing that works in its favor is the HUUGE population that surrounds and daily uses the Tube. Plus, the Tube got up and running well ahead of the automotification of London itself, hence there is a cultural bias toward using the Tube in preference to other alternatives (like your car).

This all means ticket prices can be attractive, ensuring consistent use. It also helped in limiting pass through of construction costs, and there is no need for a government subsidy a la Amtrak. You would have to be functioning as a vegetable to lose money on the Tube.

It would be great but when most system like that lose millions apon millions a year some one has to pay for it. Look at COTA they keep losing money and want more and think some how more people will ride it if they have more money. If a system could even come close to breaking even it would be a great idea.
Thing is the COTA system is not a true Mass Transit system. Its a suburban relay system with a pretty poor captive audience. Who really wants to ride COTA when they can get in their car? And, conversely, if the only audience on which you depend are the senile or aged - well, that's a pretty thin slice of the pie when compared to the HUUGE captive audience that uses the London Tube or NYC Subway daily.

Put a light rail system into the correct situation and it makes money (or pays for itself). Put it into a sprawling metropolis -- especially in a culture of the car like the US of A and it will fall flat on its face.

All that said, with the growing aged population the need to control renewed entry onto the freeways and roads by ageing folk with diminished abilities will become a concern. If you take these old folk ourt from behind the wheel then a suitable repalcement will have to developed. Not COTA, but more like the Motor Pool small vans that you could take into work in Columbus and larger cities. Perhaps a similar system will develop to fill the gap for the aged without driving priviliges. If family members and offspring are close, they should be given incentives to pick up the slack.

The only places in the US where mass transit works in where traveling by car is a major pain in the ass (NYC, etc). They're trying to ram a monorail system down the public's throat here in Honolulu...while the traffic is fairly bad during rush hours, there's no need for it yet and even when they do build one the only fuckers that will ride it are those who don't have cars (elderly, pre-16 kids, the mentally-ill), just like what's happening here in TheBus system. And as pointed out above, traveling by car is just ingrained into our mindset.

This thread has been focusing on seniors, but has anyone else noticed the number of young females (ala this morning's crash) who drive aggressively? Half the people who cut me off anymore look like teenage girls (maybe they are just trying to get my attention).

I have a niece in Arkansas (no - we were never married) who does physical rehabiliation for young folks - mostly accident victims. She says that the past couple of years almost all of here patients have been teenage girls.

at least the person who was stupid enough to drive the wrong way was the one who died.
And earlier in this thread on page 1 ...

At least in this mishap one of the dead was the driver who fucked up. Doesn't it just annoy the hell out of you when the one who survives was the drunk one or the one who's fault it was?
Frankly I'm disappointed. Recycling material this frequently suggests a dearth of new ideas. When did tibor become a johnny one-note?

These are actually steel workers and coal miners that are flipping you off. You see the finger and your mind pictures fantasies with teenage girls.

Perhaps you should start a thread about a good eye-doctor for yourself.
