Elderly Woman Causes Wrong-Way Crash

I do agree that something has to be done about bad drivers, old and young, but I have some empathy for the elderly. The US has horible mass transit and driving is usually their only means of transportation. As people loose their independence and ability to try new things they tend to give up on life too. Some would say this would solve the SS and medicare problem as well, but I don't think revoking the licences is a black and white issue. Hopefully I will be old someday.

While we are categorizing bad drivers, what about asian women? I've dated two and both were horrible drivers. Fortunately nobody ever got seriously hurt, but one was in at least one accident a year! They didn't appreciate the slanted eyes/reduced vision jokes either.

Like George Carlin said,"after you hit 60 years old, you should be able to drive your age not the speed limit! If you're 75 years old, fuck it, that's your speed limit." That would certainly liven shit up out on the highway.

I totally agree with you here. I'm a big advocate of a light rail system in bigger cities like Columbus.

Just go to Europe to see the advantages of a good rail system, especially the Tube in London.

I do understand though that the reason places like London have such a good rail system is b/c the streets are too small and crowded so it's out of necessity and not so much convenience.

The one that almost hit me WAS in an SUV, it's all coming together now! :yow2:

I'm going to call it the evil trinity still, just because that's a catchy name. From this point forward, however, whenever I speak of the theory I will give homage to the SUV rule that can bind the trinity together to create a true wrecking ball of destruction.
If you could come up with another one you would have an Evil Pentagram. How about makeup?<o =""></o>

It would be great but when most system like that lose millions apon millions a year some one has to pay for it. Look at COTA they keep losing money and want more and think some how more people will ride it if they have more money. If a system could even come close to breaking even it would be a great idea.

Keep in mind that I'm not talking about taking all of the elderly out from behind the wheel, but in more strict standards by which you can renew your license.

In my opinion, someone with skills diminished to the extent that they cannot drive, should be looked after because they probably cannot adequately take care of themselves on an everyday basis.

I don't mean to be harsh, because many of you (as I do myself) have people that we love that are elderly, sick and unable to function the way they used to. That being said, many are unaware of the danger they present to others and some are still convinced they haven't "lost" as much as they really have. It's painful to watch someone lose their independence, but they have had a chance to live a long and fruitful life and other people have that right as well.

Loss of independence at an old age is a small price to pay for the protection of the general population. We don't let kids under 16 drive do we?

Once you reach a certain age, or once you have so many moving violations, you should have to pass a driver's test every time you renew your license. Would be expensive, but how much do all the accidents cost? Use the damn e-check money for it.
Maybe our insurance premiums would go down some.
I agree that in-car distractions are the biggest problem. You can ban cell-phones and eating while moving, but you can't ban kids in the car. If you have kids in the car, do what I do, keep a big roll up duct tape handy!
And while ripping on women drivers - does anyone know a woman who can parallel park? I sure don't. the one time I was in the car when my wife tried to parallel park, I ended up having to get out and do it. we would probably still be there going up and back, up and back.

Yea Tibor, you fuckstick, I really found alot of solace in the fact that the "wrong way" driver died. It was the only thing that made this tragic story tolerable.

What a dickhead you are.

rather a wrong way retard get killed than an innocent driver. Got to love the retarded comments that Tibor is able to elicit.

This may rub a few people the wrong way, but i just saw it on the news and it made me REALLY angry. Something needs to be done to make renewing your license harder after you hit a certain age.
I know what you mean, but any legislation that negatively effects the elderly usually has a snowballs chance in hell of passing. They vote, and politicians know it. Its that simple. Trust me, the only reason GWB can even mention the "SS" words is because he is in his second term. This phenomenon will only get worse as boomers age and become a larger portion of our society.

What I don't understand is... This is a new occurance. I never heard of people getting on the wrong ramps here in Columbus before a couple of months ago. Why is this all of the sudden happening? The ramp that it happened on today has been configured the same way ever since I can remember so it's not like it was recently changed and the driver wasn't aware.

IMHO the problem is not older drivers, but stupid drivers. The driving test I took at 16 was a joke, about the only way I could see someone failing it was if they were speeding (which 2 of my dumbass friends did). Traffic laws should be amended so that the person who takes 2 minutes and does a 7 point turn to parallel park should be given a 1 year license suspension. Also, I (and others like me) should be able to give tickets to police. About 2 years ago I was driving south through the split onto 70E and passed a CPD freeway patrol officer (who was going about 50 in the left lane). As I looked over at him to figure out why he was f*$%ing up traffic like that I noticed he was busy. He had some type of brochure unfolded across the steering wheel and was reading it. I should have been able to run him off the road and revoke his license permanently- let him be a bike or horse cop.
Other changes in traffic laws should be:
Lane change on freeway in heavy traffic w/ no signal- $500 fine.
Stopping to make a turn (left or right) on 2 lane road w/traffic behind and no signal- $1000 fine.
Pulling out in front of someone on 2 lane, rural highway only to drive 150 feet and turn off- $1500 fine.
Entering freeway at 45 mph- GSW to head.
Stopping at end of freeway entrance ramp in light traffic- death to family members and life in prison.
Stopping at end of freeway entrance ramp THAT HAS ITS OWN LANE ON FREEWAY- rolled up like a ball and bowled across largest available freeway section until hit by Semi. Then all family put in prison for 1 year and upon release they are deported to France.
