Elder Scrolls V - Skyrim

Ok, archery is the shit on this game.

I was doing one of the bounties, clearing out an encampment of bandits. They were in these abandoned towers, with a bridge about three stories high spanning a river betweeen them. I went into sneak mode and and crawled thru some brush on the riverbed. When I was within about 150 yards, I saw one of them patrolling on the bridge - he was only as big as a few pixels on my 50" TV. I drew. my bow, took aim, led him with the shot by a few paces, and BOOM! The shot staggered him off the bridge and he plummeted to his death in the river below.

I love this game.

Can't believe I climbed 7,000 [censored]ing steps to get mauled by an ice troll. :sad2:

lol I tried to beat that thing 3 times. I eventually went around.

On another note, what type of charaters does everyone have?

I am a Dark Elf trying to be a battle mage. Destruction, Light Armor and one handed are my main skills. I am only level 9 so only a few skills are over 30. After reading some thoughts online I am thinking of being a pure mage. Going to start going after conjuration as I have read it is one of the best skills in the game.

Also, anyone fight that crazy bitch for her books in the winterhold quests yet? That one was hard.

Hint: there's more than 1.
On the same quest? I only encountered the 1. He took me out several times. I then found a spot where I was able to snipe him with my bow and maintain sneak (2x damage) for most of the time. He eventually jumped down when he was almost dead and Sven greeted him while I continued to shoot him full of arrows.

I was only level 8. I don't think I could have beat him going toe-to-toe.

btw, it was a bad idea for me to try and pick a fight with a few giants guarding mammoths. Lurch kicked me halfway across the map.
Yeah, I wasn't sure if they would talk to me or not. It seemed like they were just trying to scare me off at first. I walked up to one and tried to start a conversation and he teed off on me like Tiger Woods.

I decided to play my character as a wood-elf archer, with mostly light armor, since I never gave it much of a try in Oblivion. I still think it's pretty tough to do, but now that I'm around level 35 in archery and have some of the perks, I can see how this can continue to improve and really pay off going forward.

I also have Sven as a partner, so I like that he can charge them with his two-handed swords while I continue to shoot my bow.

And since it seems that all of the enchanted weapons I've received thus far are two-handed, that is becoming my second main skill.

Would you guys pick this up for console or PC? I probably will wait until early spring when it goes on sale, but wondered if it is more fun with a gamepad on the couch, or whether the graphics and add-ons for Elder Scrolls games would be more compelling on a PC.

Note, I've only played the series briefly.

I'd recommend playing the Bethesda stuff on PC, because of the mods and DLC - Bethesda is great at supporting the mod community. There is just so much more out there on PC that there is really no comparison when you look at previous titles this gen (Oblivion, Fallout 3). Having Skyrim in Steam is nice too since it puts the game on any PC you may use.

FYI, if anyone has seen the $40 deluxe Prima guide (600pg full color hardcover with ribbon bookmarks), Overstock.com has them available right now for $21.

Just ordered one for myself. :)

If I'm going to buy this late anyway, would I be better off playing the last title or two, or just jumping into this one?

There has never been much plot/continuity between the TES games that would require you play them sequentially. Each one is a standalone sandbox game that shares a continent and setting (medieval fantasy), but that's about it. There is a 200 year gap between the events in Oblivion and Skyrim, for example. So no, you will not gain anything in Skyrim by having played Oblivion.

The only reason you need to play Oblivion is that it is itself an outstanding game.

JWins- It's pretty much a universal response that PC is the best environment for these games, due in large part to the mod community.

That being said, I've never played it on a PC. I've played Oblivion and Skyrim on my 360 and thoroughly enjoy both. I consider myself more of a casual gamer with regards to these games though. I don't think you can go wrong either way, it depends more as to what you are looking to get out of the game.

I also want to add that the finishing moves for these weapons are a nice touch. It offers the slo-mo finishes from Fallout without the VATS system.

I'm particularly impressed by how easily Sven can run his great sword through the middle of so many of his opponents. I've also had a few neat finishes with my 2-handed battle axe.

I've never played any Oblivion games in the past and I'm really enjoying Skyrim so far. I'm playing it on the pc and it's running great on the lowest settings and the game still looks incredible. I've had zero issues with the game crashing as well. Which is kind of odd because New Vegas and Fallout 3 crashed all the time.

I'm playing as a Nord right now, does anyone have any tips?

One thing to note on the console vs PC issue is that the PC graphics on Skyrim are not spectacular. The PC version is clearly a port of a game made for consoles, rather than the other way around.

It may even be easier to play Skyrim on the PC with a Logitech PS3-style pad or Windows' 360 controller (it's personal preference) than with the keyboard/mouse, because the mouse acceleration rate does not feel intuitive since the cursor is mapped for a thumb stick. Navigating around the overworld map and inventory menus is an example of something that is a million times easier to do with a console controller than the mouse.

I will admit I've been really disappointed with this aspect of it.

I just wonder why my Nord has an arrow going through his head. I can't get rid of it. Changing headgear doesn't help. The arrow goes right between my eyes and out the base of my skull.

As a console player though, I love it. It was ridiculous how long it took to move the cursor across the map with the thumbstick.
