Elder Scrolls V - Skyrim

I knew I was allowed in, I just didn't think it would be worth playing as a non-mage. I'll give it a shot, then. I went there a month or so ago but all I did was sell the outfit the guy gave me. I haven't been back since.

Fort Dunstad bug. FML.

From the Wiki

  • PS3 - If the Fort Dunstad quest is bugged, continuing the Season Unending quest in the main storyline will set The Battle for Fort Dunstad to complete. The quest updates when you get both Ulfric Stormcloak and General Tullius to agree to attend the peace council. (I had this bug on PC and can confirm that this solution will give you completion of both Battle for Fort Dunstad and the "Regain the Pale" part of the questline Reunification of Skyrim on PC)
  • If the enemies and/or allies inn he quest do not appear the player should reload an older savegame from before accepting the quest. If the player then visits Fort Dunstad without having the quest, the Stormcloaks will be present and not immediately be hostile, but tell the player he is trespassing. Entering the yard of the Fort will then start the quest. The player may now kill all Stormcloaks, although this will not count towards the counter. Once every Stormcloak is dead go to Legate Rikke and now accept the quest correctly. When you travel to the Fort again now you may or may not meet the allied soldiers, but you will definitely find the Fort refilled with enemy Stormcloaks in and be able to kill enough to complete the quest. (tested January 4, 2012 with latest patch on PS3).
  • PS3 - Completing other quests and returning to the fort later may allow the quest to progress.
  • PS3 - After delivering the forged orders and before talking to Legate Rikke to begin the battle, go inside one of your homes and wait 31 days. This is a trick that is used to clear the game world of various clutter (dead bodies, dragon skeletons, arrows, knocked over objects, etc.) which may cause memory issues on the PS3. Upon waiting for 31 days, proceed with the quest as usual. This trick can also be used when the game begins to run slowly, stutter, or crash frequently.
This second method doesn't always work. On the PS3, clearing the fort, then talking to Rikke to start the quest still results in a quest marker with "100% remaining" and no Stormcloaks, making the quest impossible to finish. Ebenbrooks (talk) 19:18, December 25, 2011 (UTC)

As always with Bethesda I recommend frequent saves and making new save files every 2-3 hours :)

Yep, I did that - almost. It's still frustrating because I played hooky today and plowed thru a lot of stuff. Now I have to back up 3-4 hours. My most recent manual save was from the moment right after I accepted that quest.

I hope that backing up a bit does the trick. I've already finished the main quest so I can't count on that to fix it. If it's borked to the point of needing the main quest to fix it, the people of Skyrim will just have to figure out this whole civil war thing on their own.

Went back to a previous save last night and tried to play thru really fast with frequent saves to get back to the point of the bugged quest. I did a save right before initiating the quest, and tried going about it a couple different ways to see if I could proceeed. Nothing was working. It got really late though, and didn't get to try everything I wanted. It's not looking good though. I may have borked it over 40 gameplay hours ago.

I bought Morrowind for Xbox on its release day, and I don't recall it being this broken. There were a lot more "moving parts" to that game, too. I can't speak for Oblivion, since I didn't pick that game up until I got the PS3 a little over a year ago.

Crazy mods, using their crazy mod skills.

It's a mistake I make about once every six months. The buttons are right next to each other and look pretty much alike at a glance. Usually I catch it before somebody else does.

Oblivion was just as bad, especially on X-Box for some reason. Not that I had an X-Box ever, but I wrote a couple guides to Oblivion on the GameFAQs website. I would constantly get questions about broken quests and mostly from the X-Box users. Clearing the cache often helped, but not always. Some of the most broken quests involved the Thieves Guild and the epic last mission. Doors wouldn't open to the final area, AI doing weird things, items not appearing, you name it.

Looks like I was able to get around the bug. What ended up working for me was a variation of the second option.

Having saved the game right before meeting with the questgiver to clear the previous quest, I started from there. I then cleared the previous quest, then left the camp and fast traveled to Fort Dunstad. Stormcloaks were populating the fort, but they were not hostile - instead the warned me against trespassing when I approached. Having confirmed that they were there, I then ran (no fast travel this time) back to the camp to initiate the quest. I then fast traveled directly back to the fort and entered, and the quest proceeded normally. I didn't bother to rendezvous with the other Imperial soldiers, they eventually joined once the battle began.

Now it's off to the next [strike]bug[/strike] quest!
