It'll probably go free to play within a year. Seems like most MMOs do these days. They try to go with the old pricing model, only to find that most MMOs have a huge surge of temporary players at launch that want to try out the new kid on the block. Once the free trial period is over most of those players move on to the next big hype or back to a different game. Star Wars Old Republic was a perfect example. Huge, well known universe with Jedi light sabers, bounty hunters, space, you name it. It was backed by Bioware, Lucas Arts, and EA...pretty formidable trio. It was in development for several years. The game ended up having one of the largest population booms of any MMO at launch, but subscriptions quickly vaporized to less than half after the trials were up, and it only got worse. After several months of bleeding, and promises they wouldn't go F2P, Bioware broke down and made the switch to infuse new blood into the game.

In short, all the new MMOs figure they can at least make some development costs back with subs for the first year or so. That only goes so far though, as MMOs rarely can maintain that early base of initial subscribers. F2P is the thing now, as they give you options to spend your cash on trinkets in the game, but they also allow others to play that wouldn't otherwise throw money at the game. It helps keep populations up and keep servers active.

The f2p does seem to be the popular trend, I hope that will be the case with this one. Been playing Neverwinter Nights, which is free and a pretty good MMO so far. Loved playing the Star Wars game, it was one of the few games that was in my opinion too long. I tended to loose interest in that game as it took forever to get a character all the way to the "end" of the story.

As long as it isnt Pay to Win ill just play it when its free.

Yeah, thats a big turn off. Obviously players feel the same way too. Games like Mech Warrior Online kind of went with a "pay to win" strategy and it backfired. Seems like most MMOs that go free to play try to entice players with things like exclusive outfits, or character looks, unique looking vehicles, the sort of stuff that doesn't give players a distinct advantage, and yet it makes others jealous and want the items for themselves.

I absolutely despise F2P because most turn into P2W and I cannot stand having a billion ads or cashgrabs popping up in my face when I'm trying to play a game. Maybe i'm old school but I am of the belief that I will pay you $10 or $15 a month and in return you will make/enhance/update a game that I enjoy so much that I will continue paying and playing. Not to mention that the communities in most F2P games are absolutely awful because there is no consistency. People whine and bitch about paying $15 a month but in the grand scheme of it - that's nothing. Think of how much money you likely save spending say 20 hours a week playing that game that you might spend otherwise if you went out and did something else.

I played UO and then WoW for years each and probably spent $15/mo for 5 years playing each but I saved THOUSANDS by not going to the bar or spending my time and money on other things. Also, hell back in the days of UO and ebay I made thousands of dollars off that game in high school.

You've been playing the wrong F2P games. I think F2P when it's done in "cheap" games (Games with a short development life, small time stuff) are the ones that hit you with all the ads and cash grabs. For the most part the big time MMOs that have gone F2P, like Star Wars Old Republic, Neverwinter, Lord of the Rings (It's been awhile, but I think it qualifies) are all games that do a good job of not putting junk out there for you to entice you to buy their stuff. Typically they don't do P2W either, they just offer you visual enhancements or things like unique vehicles that are no different than a regular vehicle, they just look cooler. An example of an item like this in Star Wars Old Republic is the Carbonite Encasement. There was some animation you could buy that would put your character in a Carbonite Encasement like Han Solo for 15 seconds. It didn't really do anything, but it was cool to see. Likewise in Mech Warrior Online they offer some special Mechs you can purchase with cash, but any of these special Mechs can actually be bought and built from the ground up if you take the time, so it doesn't really give players an advantage. They also offer things like cockpit decorations (Hula girl, fuzzy dice, etc), none of which enhance your playing, but they're kind of fun and people like to show off.

F2P works when the game isn't quite as popular as say...WoW, and they need active players to keep the game going. I admit that I played WoW for quite a few years, but when money got tight with kids coming, and free time dwindled, it made it more and more difficult justifying paying for a subscription or two when I may go weeks at a time and not log in. The beauty of F2P is that you can take a long break like that and not worry about wasting your money. I play World of Tanks off and on, only when the mood strikes me. If it wasn't a F2P game I certainly wouldn't even bother leaving it on my hard drive. The same with the game War Thunder. My buddies and I will have a War Thunder weekend and fly WWII planes, then we may not touch it for a month. F2P is flexible like that, it doesn't make you feel guilty if you're not playing a game X number of hours each month.

Let me be clear that we're talking about MMO's here. I understand why a lot of games are F2P and I play some of them DOTA 2 for example. But for MMOs, you use SW:TOR as an example of a F2P game but the problem with that is that the game isn't any good. So yeah for games that aren't worth anyone's dollar they make them F2P to lure people in and then many get suckered into spending money (and a lot of times MORE than $15 a month) but why should I waste time playing inferior games for free when I can pay $15 for a quality game? I completely understand the reasoning behind F2P from the developer/producers aspect but from a gamer playing MMOs I just think there are far too many better options where paying a little bit each month is far more rewarding than playing some second rate F2P game like Star Wars.

It's been awhile since I've played it, but Star Wars Old Republic was actually quite good. According to online reviews, Old Republic rebounded quite well in 2013 after a disastrous 2012. While it's been over a year since I've played, it did have a good story, all the missions had voice acting, it had a better grind than most other MMOs, the companion feature was done very well, the PVP was excellent, and the space combat was a nice distraction. It doesn't have nearly as much content as WoW, but then again no game does. There are plenty of very good F2P games out there. Neverwinter was very good, Lord of the Rings was good, Dungeons and Dragons Online, Mech Warrior and War Thunder are still fun (Completely different genres from the others though). In fact, in today's market, I wouldn't even bother paying a subscription for ANY Multiplayer Online game that wasn't WoW simply because I honestly don't feel like many are worth the money, and theres plenty of decent F2P games out there where you don't need to spend cash. Even WoW gets a bit boring eventually, otherwise people like me would never unsubscribe.

Bottom line, just because a game is F2P, does not mean it's an inferior game. More and more successful MMOs are going to that pricing model because it works and it keeps server populations healthy. There are plenty of MMOs out there that still charge for subscriptions...and with some (Not all) you're completely wasting your money. Star Wars Galaxies was a perfect example. For the last 3-4 years before the game was shut down the development team did a HORRIBLE job fixing bugs and adding new content. It took them years to get around to fixing some items. I stuck around till the end simply because there was a tight knit community of space pilots that still organized PVP events till server shutdown, but man....Sony Online Entertainment really did very little to add to the game when you consider people were paying $15 a month.

Oh [Mark May]! Walls of text!!! Is Gator back now?

Hey, I at least broke each post up into two paragraphs

I'm not sure what F2P games Magua has been playing, but there is a very distinct difference between poorly done F2P and very good F2P games. I enjoy, and have enjoyed, games that make you buy a subscription before you can play them, but I just want to point out that not all F2P games are the suck. There are actually many good ones.
