Maybe so. Duke's vaunted recruiting, like UCLA's before it, etc. raises the question of 'would you rather sit on the pine for a powerhouse, or play for another D-1 school?' With the great TV exposure (it's better now than before, folks), and the extreme TV for the Dance, kids can play for other teams and get seen.
Remember that the NBA has the fewest pros, and probably the largest base (#'s of kids) to draw from. The chances of getting to the 'hallowed land' are extreeeeeeemly small. In the NCAA, two or more probably three, great players, can advance well into the Dance. ONce noticed, then the try-outs happen. What are there, two rounds or twenty-six? Fifty-two kids get drafted, and maybe five more per team get free agent try-outs? And, you've got the other 15 players on that team already. It's a zero sum game, where one kid gets a job, another has to lose theirs.
No, Coach K isn't losing it. There's a better pool of talent out there, and it's being spread around more. And, Duke has a bulls-eye on their chest all the time, just like UCLA used to. Heck, a degree from Duke is worth a much as one from Stanford these days, well maybe Northwestern or Columbia.
Thad Matta is capitalizing on this and bringing in local kids to play. Right now Ohio has some tremendous talent coming up the ranks, and he's capitalizing on it. Excuse my wanderings, please. Run a good program, get the kids some exposure in the Dance, and send some to the pros. that helps build a program. However, keeping it there is difficult. Ask Izzo or Illinois.
